Today feels different. William was on his way to work in the forests as he usually did after school. He has taken this path since he began his schooling, it was familiar to him. William knew this route like the back of his hand, from the twists and turns to the other denizens who travel this path as well. He knew all of their faces and took notice when some of them were missing for a day. The air was a little chillier than yesterday, but nothing he wasn't used to in these cold months. In school, he studied the same capital-approved subjects as usual. William never cared for school and always hurried out of there as fast as he could. Though William isn’t the smartest student in his class, he’s smart enough to know his talents lie in his strength, not his mind. He inherited his strength from his father, the hardest worker in district seven. Ever since the accident, Will hadn’t said more than two words to anyone, not even his own family. All he can think of is providing care for everyone, so no one would have to go through the pain that he had to endure.
Still, today felt different, like he was about to get struck by lightning or the capital would suddenly stop the hunger games and treat all the lower districts fairly. William had almost forgotten that this was the anniversary of his fathers’ death. It has been eight years since the accident in the woods. They were using new technology, developed by the capital, to increase work production. One of the machines had gotten to hot and exploded, causing severe damage to the forest, which included a mass forest fire and six deaths, one of which was Will’s father.
William needed a good laugh to himself; he never laughed much since his father. His father had the gift of laughter; he could turn your stiff old uncle into a laughing jackass. Everyone in the district would come to him, whether they were down in the dumps, or just needed a good laugh. His passing death caused the rest of the district to die, if not a little. William’s mother became so distraught, she almost gave up life altogether, it was Will who had given her new hope to live for. William took the entire burden for his community; he would not allow any sad faces in his family or his neighborhood.
But still, today felt different to him. He just knew something was going to happen to him that would change his life somehow. Maybe he would meet someone and start a healthy friendship. He never kept many friends, on account of him working so much. He didn't care for friendships anyways since it would most likely end up with one or both parties ending up in the games, then how would the friendship go. Would William actually be able to kill a friend? Maybe, if it was for his life, but William has always respected all life and always strove to protect the weak.
As he came across the road to his job site, the thought of something happening got stronger and stronger. He turned his head, searching for someone or something to appear. Nothing, maybe it was just all in his head and he had imagined the whole thing. William was going to go to work and act like this is just a normal day.
