Creed
I'm the oldest of the Esket twins. My sister Cate says I look more like a girl than a boy, but she's just a dumb girl anyway. I'm not very tall yet, but I've heard that I'll go through a growth spurt sooner or later. I hope sooner. My hair is pretty long, but we can't really afford to cut it. Cate sometimes fools around with the butcher knifes on it, but she cut me behind my ear once and I haven't trusted her to do it since. Anyway, my eyes are medium green looking. They have some yellow flecks in them too. Cate thinks they look like a field of flowers. I hate it when she says that.
My skin is an olive color, guess I got that from my mom. I heard she wasn't from district 10. I have muscles, but you can't really tell unless I show you. I'm lanky and clumsy most of the time. That's why they kicked me out of the slaughter house. I didn't like it there anyway, the animals always screamed. It was awful. My hands tremble a lot of the time and I can't help it, but don't make fun of me! I told you, I can't help it. I have freckles other than in my eyes too. They're actually all over my body. Sometimes I can't tell if it's dirt or a freckle, but I get bored trying to count.
My face is usually bright, but my cheeks are kind of sallow. They're always pretty red though because I blush a lot. I tend to smile a lot for no reason at all. I have one weird eyebrow, but I guess that's no big deal. I think I got hit with a pitchfork in the barn when I was younger and it just healed funny. I think it makes me look tough. I'm pretty average, if you ask me.[/left][/size][/color]
Cate
I'm Cate. The younger of the Esket twins. My brother and I are fraternal twins so they say we look a lot alike. My hair is a little longer than my brother's, but it's the same mousy brown. Sometimes when we're in the light it shines like a fox's fur though. My body is covered in freckles too, but less than Creed. His skin is tanner than mine. Mine is like porcelain, but porcelain is pretty so I don't care.
I may be younger than Creed, but I'm taller and I look like I'm fed better. I'm still small though, I'm only 12 you know. I don't have many scars like my brother but it's probably because I'm not shaky or clumsy like him. Don't make fun of Creed because he shakes, he was born that way and he's still okay as a brother. My eyes are what really make me different from Creed. They are a white blue and sometimes look light gray from far away. My eyelashes are super long too. I think my eyes are the best feature of mine.
I don't smile as much as Creed. You'll hardly see my teeth. I don't mind grinning, but don't ask me to smile. There's no reason to smile. My cheeks are full and my face is round. Creed used to say it looked like an onion, then I hit him for it and he never said that again. Like Creed said, we're pretty average kids.[/right]
Personalities:
[/size]Creed is the gentler of the two. He is very shy and stutters often when speaking. His nerves are not what makes him shake, but he is a very nervous individual. He has a kind heart and cares deeply for all living things. He is a happy boy, regardless of his tendency to keep to himself. He often gets embarrassed over little incidents and takes teasing much too seriously. Creed has the desire to be tolerable around everyone and is constantly jumping through hoops to please other people.
When he is able to hold a conversation he speaks with a sincerity beyond his years. Creed has the strange ability to calm anyone with just his voice. He sings a lot too, but only when no one is listening. He will only sing for Cate if she is sick or asks him to do so. Creed tries his best to act tough, but is very feeble in emotional and physical strength.
He can't even be his true self in front of Cate because he hates being made fun of and that is one of Cate's specialties. Truly he wants to be brave and strong for Cate, but he would never tell her that. Creed cannot focus on the good qualities in himself, he can only pinpoint the bad. He is not a pessimist though, he's actually the more optimistic of the pair.[/size]
Cate is extremely negative and cold. She had a sweet heart, but that was lost long ago. She takes pleasure in putting down others, even her brother Creed. Cate is not heartless though, she is more sensitive around her brother for sure. She is harsh and the more mature and realistic of the two. She hardly ever smiles unless she's witnessing someone else's misfortune.
Cate is strong-willed and stubborn to the extreme. She will never back down from a fight and usually dominates any she is involved in, despite her age and size. Cate sees the glass as always half empty. She is also very afraid of animals. She may act like she's not because she works in a slaughterhouse, but in actuality she is terrified of most creatures in and outside of District 10. She shows no fear in front of other people though, because this would make her seem weak.
She is very protective of her older brother. They share a strange bond that consists of teasing and abusing but ultimately their love for each other is pure. Cate is also not very fond of being without her brother. He's the one solid she can count on and she is constantly wary when he's away. She usually keeps to herself, but will talk to any and all strangers. She's quite the orator.[/size][/center]
History (applicable to both):
Creed and Cate were the product of a scandalous affair between a woman from District 4 and a man from District 10. Their mother abandoned them in District 10 and then ended her own life because she could not bear the judgement she knew she would face. Creed and Cate's father was cast out for his poor decisions and he refused to burden his children with his suffering. He begged an older woman in town, who knew him well, to take his children somewhere away from the ridicule of the District. She reluctantly agreed, but eventually the children were relocated on the outskirts of the District away from the majority of the bustle.
The only way they were accepted was through a business transaction between the fragile old woman and a butcher. They would be adopted by the butcher and his wife only if the woman continued to provide compensation for their needs and resources. She agreed and Creed and Cate were safe for a brief moment of their young lives. When they were just 10 years old the old woman died and the butcher and his wife were infuriated. They could not afford the children and immediately cast them out of their meager residence. Creed and Cate were forced to survive on their own for a little over a year in District 10.
Orphaned, with not a soul in the world to care for them, they pushed on. Cate being the stronger of the two was able to hold her own by picking up odd jobs and gathering scraps wherever possible. Creed tried to do the same, but his disability caused the employers great frustration and Cate decided he'd be better served somewhere else. She found him a pleasant job on a ranch caring for horses and other livestock. She couldn't stand the place so as he worked during the day, she found ways for them to continue surviving in other outlets.
This is how they lived for 3 years. Creed stayed on the ranch all day and actually became quite cozy with the rancher's son, who was a young teenager at the time. Cate hardly ever saw Creed other than when she brought him food at night. Creed's personality was so inviting that people welcomed him into their homes, but Cate was not as fortunate. She also despised the thought of owing people and of people taking pity on her. Cate became quite handy with knives and her ruthlessness allowed her to slaughter animals for processing quite easily for a child so young.
The two eventually found a stability from their work. Cate was the assistant to a much kinder butcher located in the middle of District 10. His industry collected a hearty amount of coin and he paid her fairly for her work. Creed made nice with the rancher family and they basically thought of him as their own son. He not only began receiving pay for his work, but also gained the privilege of handling the horses and other animals.
Creed and Cate live humbly in this way even now. Their reputation is still whispered throughout the District, but is normally quieted by their respective "family figures". Their father has not been heard from since being cast out, but it was rumored that he was captured and taken to the Capitol for questioning. Their lives have been hard, but their spirits are strong.
