Appearance:
Irafine's hair extends down past her shoulders and curls every bit of the way. In the sunlight it reveals an array of colors from dark and light brown to red highlights. Her hair is too long for her work and often gets in her way; when she can, her hair has to goes back into a long ponytail. Her eyes are colored hazel with a few flecks of green poking through at random. Her head is wide at the top and slims down right after her jawbone to form a rather small, flat chin. The area under her eyes and over her nose hints at her having freckles but they are rather hard to notice.Personality:
Irafine stands about 5 feet and 7 inches tall and weighs nearly 130 lbs. For her weight she appears extremely skinny and that can be explained by her muscle. Both her arms and legs have muscle but she often has trouble with them. Her hands are calloused and her toes have been broken many times, giving them a flat-bone look. She has long fingers and she keeps their nails short, never reaching over the skin. Her left shoulder has a small indent behind it from where she landed on a rock her first time breaking a horse.
From a distance Irafine isn't hard to spot. Her wardrobe, if you can even call it that, consists of plaid shirts, jeans, and high boots. She has four plaid shirts which all started off being blue and white but quickly faded to a gray color. Her worn blue jeans are the only pair of pants she has, except for the skirt she wears for The Reaping, and they are covered in a layer of dust. The brown boots are also the only pair of shoes she has, but she tries not to wear them unless she must because of the holes forming on the bottom.
Irafine has a passion for the horses that her family owns, especially the foals. However unpleasant it may be, she is always the first one up on a green horse's back. Her enthusiasm often ends with her laying on the ground with a new set of bruises, she doesn't mind much though. Her favorite time of the year is when her father's mares throw their foals. The excitement just swells up inside of her while she's waiting to see what new foals she will have that year. Her farm is her safe haven, not out in the world with all the other people.History:
People have always brought out the worst in Irafine. Unlike people, horses were true. Horses wouldn't lie to you or stab you in the back, those seem to be the most common qualities in human beings. A few close friends were all Irafine wanted, a close few that she could always trust. That could namely be Irafine's biggest flaw. Her trust. It can be close to impossible to earn her trust, but trust breeds loyalty. Irafine's trust in people, the ones who have earned it, is overwhelming. There is no such thing as a small amount of trust, she will always trust friends wholly and expects them to trust her the same way back. As said, trust breeds loyalty. Irafine can not imagine betraying her friends for anything.
One of the biggest fear that Irafine has is of the unknown. The unknown can apply to anything; life, death, even the scary thing in the bushes. She always has to be aware of her surroundings. Without that awareness about her she feels vulnerable, but with that awareness she feels invincible. That also brings out another problem, her confidence. At times she is very over-confident to the point that she won't listen to a single word she is told, while other times she is so under-confident that she hangs on ever literal word she is told. There never seems to be a middle ground with Irafine. It's constantly high or low, never an in-between.
Irafine fears the Reaping more than anything. She gets a new plaid shirt each year for it, that's why she has four, and wears the same skirt and boots. Her first year when the escort reached in the bowl Irafine's legs were shaking. The only reason she has the conscious thought of them shaking was because the top of her boots were smacking off her legs, leaving nice red marks that wouldn't go away for a few days. Every year she watches 23 children die, and one be treated as if a hero. No, they weren't hero's, they were killers. The same killer that Irafine knows lies dormant inside of her, waiting to be awoken by the Capitol. She prays it never will.
Irafine doesn't have a bad history like a lot of children in Panem. She was born a healthy little girl and weighed almost eight pounds. For two years her parents cared for her unconditionally until they decided they wanted another baby. They tried, and tried, but her mother never got pregnant and now she was too old. Irafine didn't mind much, a younger sibling would have just gotten in her way.Codeword: Odair
When Irafine turned seven her dad took her out to his corrals and let her see all the baby horses that were just born. She loved them all, of course, but her favorite was a bay colt with a faint star. He had the most beautiful, open face Irafine had ever seen. She ducked under the fence and ran up to the little babe before her dad could stop her. The dear soul, he just stood there as Irafine wrapped her arms around his face and hugged him tightly. Now Irafine knew that could've gotten her a hoof to the chest, but the little colt did not move. Why he did not, Irafine had no idea.
Every day after that her father taught her how to act around the horses, how to take care of them, how to ride them. She tried to spend equal time with all of the horses but kept finding herself coming back to the colt. He should have a name, she decided when he turned one year old. He was no longer the colt, he was Ayto. Irafine was nine when it came time to train Ayto to be ridden. For whatever reason, her father thought it a good idea to have Irafine break Ayto. She was only nine! Before the end of the whole ordeal Irafine had quite the collection of injuries. A broken finger, a bruise on the side of her face, a limp on her left leg for about two months, and a small dent in the back of her shoulder that is still there.
As hard as it may be to believe, her parents tried to shield Irafine from the Hunger Games. Albeit she would find out sooner or later, they didn't want her young mind to have to comprehend the torturous things that she may one day have to endure. They succeeded for four years. When she was five she got out of her room and walked into the dining room where her parents were trying not to watch the slaughter. "Mommy?" Irafine had called to her. Her mother rushed over to her but not before she burst into tears. She'd walked in during the bloodbath and that was something you could not simply forget.
