Appearance:

If you pull a strand of Merri's hair and release, it will spring back. Her highlighted blonde hair bounces around as she travels and her brown eyes as big as saucers absorbs everything. Her slender figure has never seen a well sized meal. Her legs are stocky, not built like a runner and her face is scarred from years of work. Her face is round and her nose is very small, almost like a birds face. Her funny appearance sometimes gives her a hard time at school. But in a District where looks is the last thing on the people's mind, no one really cares.

Merri wears an Indian charm around her neck all the time to remind her of a better time of her ancestors. She wears hand-me-downs or whatever her family can manage. Her dark tanned skin separates her from the Capitol. She always carries a bag to gather anything edible or anything she comes across. She also carries a knife with a thin blade and a carved handle just in case. She is not very strong, in fact she is rather weak. Then again, most of the teenagers in District 10 are weak from lack of food.

Personality:

Meridian is one with nature. She can track a cat down five miles away. Her free-spirited nature is distinctly passed down from her Indian ancestors. She does not like being confined by rules and despises the peacekeepers. She often likes to play pranks on the peacekeepers to show them they cannot control her. She is very wise, but not always smart. Her wit has kept her family alive through hardship and trouble.

Her favorite thing to do is go to the stables of District 10 where they keep the horses and groom their lustrous coats until all the tangles have disappeared. People have rumored that Merri can talk to animals. She is an animal whisperer who can calm any animal including capitol bred mutts. She can also predict the weather and the next rain shower or sunny day. She is the towns meteorologists. Since the District is part of producing agriculture, weather plays an important part.

She hates hurting living things and cannot stand the hunger games. Her biggest strength is her knowledge of edible foods and where they grow. She tries hard to provide for her family in every way she can and is always concerned about low food levels. She has a high intellect about what to eat and what not to eat because of past experiences in the agriculture fields. Her family lives off of what she gathers. Roots, figs, mushrooms, fruit, vegetables, bark, and leaves are all things that she gathers.

Her weakness is that she hates weapons and can't use the easiest weapons to save her life. What she can do is survive in the nature. Her knowledge of plants and animals help her to survive. In a world where only the wealthy survive, survival is a hard thing to do. Meridian Jones is one of the few people who could run away from her District and survive.

History:

Meridian Jones was born to Martha and Cain Jones. She has six brothers, two older and four younger. Because of her big family, she tries to relieve her mother of as many duties as possible. She has tried to cook with the little food they can gather and divides the food evenly between all the family members. All the family members that can sign up for tessera which helps eliminate the need for gathering to an extent.

The Jones' used to have another older brother, but he was reaped one years earlier in the previous quarter quell in which he died from quicksand. Since then the family has kept to themselves, grief stricken. This took an extreme emotional tole on Meridian, who was very close to her brother who used to provide the most food to the family. Because he died, Merri has to fill his shoes to provide food.

One of the main things that sustains the family is that they have a cow, the one luxury they can have because they live in District 10. Penny the cow is the one thing that keeps the family alive in the dark times. She provides the family with at least a gallon of milk a day that can be sold at the local market or made into cheese.
