Name: Jenna Paisely
Age: 17.2
Gender: Female
District/Area: District 10
Appearance:
If Jenna were anyplace else but District 10, her slight frame would be desired. Alas, in a district where there are cattle and livestock to be tended to, and stables to be cleaned, her beautiful appearance will not help her one bit. Factually, it hinders Jenna quite a bit, and she is severely lacking in physical strength. Willowy, scrawny, even, it is no shock that at 5'7, Jenna weighs 111 pounds. Underweight. Both her legs and torso are fairly long, and she is proportioned evenly. With virtually little to no curves, the alternative to her elegant, dainty physique is child-like. Jenna has a flat stomach with various bones jutting out unattractively, and prominent ribs. Jenna has a long neck. That isn't all that's long, either, with impressively lengthy arms and feet, though her hands, in contrast, are rather small. Her pinkies are abnormally short. An effect of her weight, Jenna is worn out easily and prone to fainting. She isn't the least bit suited for life in her district, but attempts to make the best of it. Cruelly, people say she's shaped like a rectangle; straight up and down. What she wouldn't give to alter the shape of her body.
As for her face? It is one that runs in Jenna's family of sharp features and typical District 10 appearances. She has a circular face with a rounded chin, and very dark honey toned eyes that are just as round. Jenna has thin eyebrows that jut downward, and high cheekbones to compliment her full cheeks. A spray of freckles runs across her long concave nose, that turns upward only slightly and at the last moment. Her forehead is wide, a unique feature. Jenna has supple, soft, hydrated skin which is a light medium tone, free of blemishes. Jenna has tiny ears that are too far back, and pointed up toward the top. This she hides with her hair. Jenna has long, somewhat wavy hair, which cascades deliberately downward just below her flat chest. It is often blowing in her face and seems to be lacking a specific part. It is a variety of blonde shades, ranging in hue from butterscotch to golden beige, depending mainly on how sunny it is outside.
Jenna has unique style. With a passion for fashion and enchanting patterns, her high-waisted shorts and knee-length dresses do not blend in amongst the sea of endless blue-jeans and straw hats. Daily, she tries to vary her outfits and make them different and striking, captivating as her warm brown gaze. Usually, however, due to lack of extravagant clothing in her closet from insufficient funds, she just wears old hand-me-downs of plain T-shirts and jeans that gap at her slender ankles. Her favorite outfit is anything that's a dress, really. She is a girly-girl when it comes to clothing. The outfit she dislikes most is a pair of darkly washed blue jeans and her old, white, button down shirt, paired with heeled brown boot. It isn't as if the outfit is unattractive. In fact, that outfit is commonly worn in District 10. However, that is the dilemma. That outfit is commonly worn. Pertaining to clothing only, Jenna likes to stand out. The only plain outfit you can find her in that she likes is her night gown. Of soft lace and delicate material, they say it is a gown sown for the finest of District 10. Jenna doesn't know how it ever ended up in her family, but it's been there since three generations back and hasn't budged ever since.
And then, there is her Reaping Day attire. Jenna detests the day but loves what she gets to wear on it. A stunning dress, fitted at the waist and flared everywhere else. The dress is short enough to expose her defined calves, toned from years of running all over her father's ranch and tending to the cattle. In addition, there is her golden tinted jewelry, complimentary to the dress which is a soft red hue. On that day, from head to toe, she is decorated. No place is left untouched-- not even her mouth. Wide and thin and naturally turned ever so slightly downward, with identically sized upper and lower lips, Jenna's mouth is stained red with berries, thus cleverly adding a tint of color to her face. From what she's heard, Jenna could use the work. It is really the only day she ever feels beautiful.
Personality:
Upon meeting her, most people come to the same conclusion about Jenna. This conclusion usually includes the word standoffish, or on occasion, snobby. In any event, regarding first impressions, Jenna gives people the wrong idea. In reality, Jenna is down-to-earth, the rare kind of person who still believes in following your heart. Generally, she is quiet. She is shy, insecure, and frightened of what people will think about her. Being so preoccupied with making a respectable first impression, Jenna gives off the wrong vibe. While nearly silent around others and fretting about anything she may say and how it would be interpreted, Jenna gives off the impression that she is uninterested in conversation. This causes people to deem her standoffish and rude. Thereby, they come to the conclusion that she is a snob. Truthfully, she is anything but.
While she may not be necessarily mean or snappy, Jenna does, like most, think genuinely horrid thoughts about people. Not only that, but Jenna shares them, too. She is something of a rumor starter, and is unaware that she is such a person. Jenna is hypocritical; in her eyes, she can do no wrong. Thus, when she starts a rumor, or gossips like she usually does, Jenna finds no fault with doing so. Jenna is additionally judgemental. With all of these qualities, how could Jenna possibly manage to have friends, you ask? It is simple; she is helpful, nice, and sweet. Though she always has a bad statement to apply to someone, she has ten praises for every negative thing she says.
Jenna dislikes confrontation. Though she may give off a confident vibe, she feels anything but. In arguments, Jenna is the voice of reason, the peacekeeper, certainly not the one with the temper. Jenna is more calm, likely from her time with the animals. They soothe her, she claims. Jenna has always had a bond with the non human creatures from growing up with them. Horses in particular call to her. Easily excited, Jenna is a light sleeper. She often wakes in the dead of the night, and to get back to sleep, wanders around her district and home. Artistic with a clear, high vocal rang, Jenna feels that the only way she can accurately express herself to others is through her art or song.
History:
Jenna was an unsightly baby, born into a crowded family of five-- including herself, six. Unlike Eva and Eve, the first-born twins who were both seven at her birth, Jenna wasn't an accident. Jenna wasn't the sloppy result of a midnight tryst, unlike second born Rosalind who was four when she was born. Jenna was planned, intentional, anticipated. Unfortunately, when she came, she was ugly. Introduced to the world in a darkly lit, supremely small room, when Jenna was born, she was a frightening shade of red from hours of screaming in the womb. She had short, stringy, greasy white blonde hair; it sprouted in various places on her scalp. Her arms were too long, legs too gangly. Awkward and much too big for her age, Jenna wasn't the bombshell that her parents, Pippa and Richard, had so hoped for to complete the family image. Jenna wasn't the injured little child that Eva and Eve had hoped to tend to. And Rosalind? Well, she was upset that Jenna had arrived to steal all of her thunder, a certified attention seeker. Yet, baby Jenna, unaware of any of this, fit none of the desires of her family. As she grew into her body and out of her stages of fitful crying smoothly into toddler-hood, her family, though they had loved her all the time, finally began to accept her, celebrate her, cherish her. Just as she, innocent and young, so willingly loved them.
At age five, Jenna began homeschooling. However, she craved interaction outside of her family and quickly grew bored of the same setting. Pippa, her mother, was a former schoolteacher who had abandoned the school house to become a full-time homemaker. When Jenna was six, she made the decision to send her to school away from home. The family owned a ranch filled with cattle and livestock, and did raise them to sell off to butchers and such, whoever would buy them and then ship them off to the Capitol. It was an averagely sized ranch, practically normal for their district. Everyone pitched in to help with chores, making casual conversation with one another, occasionally riding horseback into town for necessities on their jet-black stallion. Jenna's father, Richard, had an official job title too, despite this. He was a cattle farmer. He implanted frozen cow embryos to increase the diversity of the herd. It was tedious work, but necessary, and provided an ideal income. Richard hated it and often complained about it; Pippa complained about his complaints. The arguments began, frequently, when Jenna was about seven, almost eight.
Up until then, Jenna was a happy child. Regarding school, Jenna was average, even thriving in certain subjects. Socially, though lonely at times, she was friendly enough to have a small group of friends. Jenna performed chores and small tasks at home, despite her size and the fact that she was not suited to several of them. Her lifestyle was fair. The family wasn't starving. And so Jenna considered herself and her life fairly mediocre. Nothing too bad and nothing too good had ever, ever happened to Jenna.
As described, Jenna was an ugly duckling. But when she hit double digits, Jenna grew into her body. Finally, at last, she was pretty, something she had so longed for to fit in with her family. So age ten was a happy one, but the happiness would not last long. A year later, her mother began acting strange. Pippa would go ranting and raving about nonexistent people. She underwent hallucinations, would scream uncontrollably, have severe personalities changes which induced violence, and lost her grip on reality entirely. What sparked the change in the carefree mother is left to speculation. In any case, when Jenna was twelve, her mother was diagnosed with insanity by the doctors who were too incompetent to give a specific label for her odd symptoms. Pippa got worse. She began acting out and speaking openly against the Capitol, and even committing crimes such as thievery. Officials and doctors alike recommended sending Pippa to what was commonly referred to as the crazy house. Formally, however, it was called The Detention Center. They assured the family that it would not tamper with her mental state, only provide her with a decent place where she could live in peace. The family made a collective decision to send her away. When Jenna was thirteen, her mother got shipped off to the underground structure. Their farewell was touching. Despite her failing mental state, the family still cared about Pippa. Unfortunately for the family, Pippa no longer gave a damn about anyone but herself.
For a while, Pippa wrote letters. She sounded as if she was improving, away from the district setting. Jenna clung to the hope, in the years that she was fourteen and fifteen, that her mother would return. But the letters stopped. For months, a whole year, even, there was no word on Pippa. And then, when Jenna was sixteen, an official letter arrived from the center. It reported that Pippa had gotten much, much worse, and that her residence at the center could be permanent to ensure the safety of the district residents. It said that she had went on a rampage, almost killing a roommate. When placed in solitary confinement, Pippa had went on a hunger strike and almost died. She had fallen into a coma as a result of unspecified medical complications. After this notification from the center arrived, Pippa wrote a couple more letters, and then halted the writing altogether. Jenna had not had any communication with her from the time she was sixteen. She loved her mother like the air she breathed, and could not imagine life without her. That is, until it happened.
