He was alone.
That was what Anderson had wanted all along. His sisters, he loved them so dearly. Ever since the death of his mother and the disappearance of his father, nothing seemed to improve. Everything had landed on his shoulders and his sisters looked up to him. He ran the business and took care of the trees, and every single little thing he did was for his family. All day, he was surrounded by people and he wanted to get away. To get away from the noise, Anderson had done his own disappearing. He deserved to be a bit selfish every once in a while. Right?
He told Arielle that he was going somewhere for the day. In response, all he received was an ‘Alright Addie.’ There were no questions, no suspicions. His older sister must have suspected that he was taking a day off. She didn’t complain or rat on him. She let him go and he would have to thank her for that later.
At the moment, Addie had no idea where he was. All he knew was that he was in a tree somewhere. He was probably trespassing on someone’s property but it was unlikely that he would be found up here. Tree climbing, the only decent skill he possessed. To get away from everyone, from everything, all he had to do was climb a tree. There was something relaxing about the silence and the feeling of leaves tickling your skin. Walking on the ground only caused him pain, being several feet in the air gave him a feeling of freedom. Joyous.
His legs were stretched out on one large branch. His back rested against the trunk, an elbow propped on his hip, the hand cradling his head. With the other hand, he rubbed his knee is slow circles, trying to be rid of some of the pain. In front of others, he wouldn’t do this. Anderson did his best to show no pain. He tried not to limp, flinch, or even reach to massage the painful area. This was especially around his family. His sisters knew it hurt but he never showed it. He was supposed to be running this family and working several hours at the orchard. He couldn’t show weakness, they would try to get him to stop working. That wasn’t an option.
They were only scraping by with the money they made. It was only the three of them but Mel was growing every day and it cost a good amount of money to keep the orchard running. Also, as much as the idea made Addie’s chest tighten, he may even have to take tessera this coming month. That would mean his name going into the Reaping three more times besides his original seven entries. He was quite aware of other kids having their names entered many more times than that but still, each extra entry meant one more chance his name could be pulled. Anderson didn’t even want to think about what his family would go through if he was reaped.
Anderson groaned loudly, rubbing his eyes with his arm. He couldn’t think about the Hunger Games. This would be his last year his name would be in the Reaping. After that, he would be free from the Reapings. That is, until Mel turned twelve but he never wanted to think about that ever. Well, it would come around but still, now wasn’t the time to think about it.
Trying to wipe those thoughts from his mind and just try to relax, Anderson pulled an apple from his pocket. One of the fruit they grew at the orchard. It wasn’t uncommon for him to steal one or two every once in a while. He knew that the people in the Capitol were too lazy to count each individual apple. They probably weighed them or something. That was why he always took the small ones.
Before he could even take a bite, a sudden spasm of pain in his knee made him flinch. This caused the precariously perched apple to fall out of his hand and plummet back down to the earth. Anderson watched in disappointment as it hit the ground with a thud. Parts of the apple exploded, scattering the good food everywhere. Some of still remained intact but the climb down to get it would not be worth it. By the time he got down there, some animal would’ve picked up the pieces.
Muttering a string of obscenities, Anderson leaned back down against the trunk. Just his luck. Seeing as how the day has gone so far, Anderson wasn’t expecting it to get much better.
