Ariadne checked her pack for a second time. 3 filled water containers? Check. Several packs of food? Check. Knife. Check. Her trusty javelin? Check. Blankets? Check. Her ratty old blanket, with the mysterious initials C.T.? Check. And her map, "borrowed" from some fancy-looking house in District 12? Check. She opened it up, and studied what she had written. Districts 1-9 were heavily circled, meaning she would search far and wide for this C.T., who had wrapped in a blanket as an infant, and left her in the woods, to die or be found, she wasn't sure. Good news, Asimlia found her, or she would be dead. Bad news, Asimila was gone, gone to other countries. Ariadne snorted. Good luck with that.
She had put an X on her camp near the ruins of District 13, in case she needed to get back to it. District 10 was lightly circled, as she had been there a couple of times, but had found no C.T., but she had only searched about twice. Not nearly as many times as District 12 and 11. District 11 was particularly hard to get in and out of, so she wasn't willing to try that again. District 12, was too gloomy for her taste. No, C.T. was definitely in 1-10, and if not that, the Capitol...
The thought of it sent shivers up her spine, despite the the relatively warm air she stood in, under the cover of the high trees, their green leaves swaying in the wind. What if whoever had left was from the Capitol? The horrible Capitol she had heard stories about. What if they were her parents?
She pushed that disgusting thought from her mind, to keep her lunch from making an reappearance. No, no, she couldn't have that. She had several days of walking, alone, in the forest under she reached 10. Oh, joy.
She stood and expertly strapped her javelin onto her back, in case she ran into trouble. Or she ran out of food. But she preferred food from the Districts, rather than wildlife out here. Besides, though she would never admit it, she was hopeless at hunting. She stood, slinging her small pack around her hip, already she felt weighed down by the water, and food. She slipped her knife into her boot, ignoring the uncomfortable stretching on her ankle. She knew it would be bloody by nightfall.
She sighed. Another week of nothingness. No one to talk to or interact with. How wonderful. She imagined running into anyone, even a Peacekeeper in the forest. She had had first-hand experience with a few, and they were a nasty bunch. She tried to imagine meeting a nice one in the forest. How interesting that conversation might be.
"Hi, I'm Ariadne, how are you?"
"Oh, hi. I'm a Peacekeeper from 11. You know, the farming one?"
"Oh yeah, I've stolen from there a couple of times."
"Have you now? So, where are you headed?"
"You know, a tour around the Districts. Perhaps the Capitol."
"Oh, how nice. Well, good luck!"
Ariadne nearly laughed out loud, but quickly covered her mouth. A nice Peacekeeper? Yeah, right! She allowed herself a small giggle, and then sighed again, once more overcome by the feeling of loneliness. She was alone, once more. No imaginary Peacekeepers. Just Ariadne and the forest, alive with singing birds, and humming bugs. Her only company.
Shoulders hunched, Ariadne adjusted her pack, and began to walk. Whether it would lead her to clues about her family, she was unsure. But if there was one thing she knew, it was this: No matter how far, long, or where you walked, you'd always reach something. Now, she just hoped it was true.
