McKinley Hawthorne Graybuck

Appearance

At first glance, one would assume that McKinley is a man of money. He always wears suits, even inside his own home. All of them are made specifically for him, as he doesn't believe in wearing clothing that is mass-produced. Whenever he leaves the house, he takes his black wooden cane with him. He doesn't need it to walk by any means, but he thinks it adds class to this appearance. That would be up to an individual to decide, however.

Turning to his face, you would see that he has the strong jawline, which gives him a noble appearance. He shaves on a daily basis, but at times he prefers not to, so he can be seen with a small amount of stubble across his jaw. His nose is a bit large in proportion to the rest of his face, and looks as if it may have been broken at least once in the past. His eyes and equidistant from his nose, though the left eye is a fraction of an inch higher up on his face than the right one. The color of those eyes would be blue. They can shine a brilliantine sapphire color when he is happy, but be cold as ice when he is serious.

But if we are to study McKinley, we must also study another person, a man by the name of Bullet. This man is McKinley's alter-ego.

If one were to compare McKinley and Bullet, it would be difficult to tell that they were the same person. While they have the same facial structure, they appear so different that hardly anyone would assume they are on and the same. Bullet dresses rather shabbily, as he comprises the lower class of the Capitol. Not everyone in the Capitol is fabulously rich. There are some people that have to work for a living, and Bullet is one of these people.

His clothes are last year's fashions, threadbare, and usually with at least one hole in them. He often has dirt smudged on him somewhere. Bullet owns very few pieces of clothing that the wealthier Capitolites would deem acceptable, and he wear these only on rare occasions.


Personality

The first thing to be said about McKinley is that he's good at being a gentleman. He always opens doors for women, and stands up when one enters or leaves the room. He knows all the rules of etiquette, even those that other Capitolites have seemingly thrown out the window. He is an impeccable dinner guest, and knows how to carry on a polite conversation. On occasion, McKinley will slip up and say something that's impolite, without even realizing it.

He is very good at keeping secrets. Rarely does he tell someone else one of his secrets, and never unintentionally. He would only tell his secrets to someone he trusted enormously, and so far, there's only one person that fits that description. His avox, Innocence O'Reily. And the most likely reason that he tells his secrets to her is that he knows she can't tell them to anyone else.

On the surface, McKinley almost seems perfect. But deep below, there's another half, the side of him that others would refer to as "evil."

Bullet is nearly the exact opposite of McKinley. He doesn't hesitate to tell lies, and he has absolutely no manners. He'd sooner eat his own brain than act polite. Few care to socialize with him, as he's rather gruff. He doesn't like to socialize, because he has far more important things to do. If Bullet is out on the streets, it's most likely for one reason: he's out to steal something.

He has orchestrated grand plans for breaking into the luxurious homes of the Capitol, and single-handedly stolen things of great value. It is a skill that Bullet has honed since his childhood, and he takes great pride in it. He's rarely ever caught, and when he is, it's luckily only when stealing something from a small stand that lines the street.

He will knock down anyone in order to get what he wants, and he uses McKinley's knowledge of the upper class to aid him. McKinley knows all about the Capitol's wealthy citizens, and Bullet uses the information he gathers to help him rob their houses. Bullet himself sometimes goes to the less wealthy of the Capitol, and even the avoxes, to get any further information he might need before heading off. He never breaks into a house before he has all the necessary information.


History

Bullet, as mentioned before, is part of the lower class of the Capitol. His kind are rarely noticed, as they are the ones who do the dirty work of the richer citizens. His kind are the ones that serve these people, and they never get any credit for it. The credit usually goes to the avoxes, if anyone cares to give credit to them at all. Bullet was born under a different name to two young servants with not much to their names. He grew up in poverty, wearing only second-hand clothes, receiving a poor albeit complete education. Complete enough for someone like him, that is, whose only future was serving those whose snot was worth more than him.

In the beginning, Bullet thought nothing of it. Oh, he was jealous of those that had big houses and many toys. But his mother and father loved him, and that was enough. He spent his childhood with the other children of servants in a vast mansion. The servant children were only allowed into the mansion on the rarest of occasions, but Bullet didn't mind growing up in it's shadow.

And then, one day, he did. He was a gangly thing, barely thirteen years old, but he was tired of it. He wanted to be like those people, not under them. He wanted out. he planned to run away, to try to start a new life for himself. But something happened to get in his way. His mother caught a terrible cold rather suddenly, and his family didn't have the money to send for an expensive Capitol Doctor. She died three days later during the night.

As Bullet grew, he started to work in the mansion alongside his father. He learned a lot there about etiquette, and while he pretended not to care about it, he practiced it by himself in his room, knowing it may one day come in handy. And as time passed, he learned more about the mansion. Where its treasures were hidden, and where the master liked to stash his money. A plan began to formulate. One day, he decided it was time to put it into action.

He broke into the mansion late at night and stole many of their valuables. He hid his spoils under his floorboards, and no one ever suspected him of the crime he'd committed. On his next day off, he pawned the items off on the black market, where no asked questions. Even if they did, Bullet wouldn't have answered them.

Soon he hungered to steal again. He gathered information on another house, and robbed that one, too. This went on for some time, until Bullet had quite a pile of money. He quit his job and bought his own mansion, along with clothes to befit his new status. He turned himself into a perfect gentleman, and the people of the Capitol accepted him without much of a fuss. He had even given himself a new name, so no one would suspect where he'd come from.

McKinley lived peacefully for a while. He was happy, and his money had been invested wisely. He wouldn't run out anytime soon. But with time, his urges to steal came back. He came up with a new version of himself, one that was much like the person he'd left in his childhood, long before he'd given himself the name McKinley. He prepared himself to rejoin the other half of the Capitol, but only briefly. He'd need another name, too, and the one he'd been given when he was born wouldn't do. That person was dead now. He christened himself Bullet and set off.

McKinley robbed many more mansions disguised as Bullet, though now it was just to keep that half of his brain shut up. Every now and then he would get the ache to steal, and so he did. But soon he realized that he wanted someone to confide in. He'd never met anyone in the Capitol he thought he could trust. Most of them would spill all his secrets if they had enough to drink. He needed someone that he knew would never speak a word. So he bought himself an avox.

Innocence O'Reily was a small girl of fifteen. She never told McKinley why she'd been avoxed, and he never asked. He confided all his secrets in her. She was never really much of a servant for him, except for fixing him meals, which she only did at her own insistence. With time, McKinley grew fond of her, and to this day, she is the only one McKinley would call a true friend.
