Kirby. It was way to hot for September, I thought as I walked briskly through the front doors of the bakery. The first thing that hit me were the scents. Freshly baked bread, chocolate, cookies, brownies, oh! My mouth watered as I made my way to the counter. Bread, I had to remind myself, just bread. If only I could help my hungry eyes that wandered to the glass display of decorative cookies and cakes. A low growl emerged from the pit of my stomach. My fingers clutched the brown leather pouch that held only enough money for a loaf of bread. Just bread. I whimpered softly to my self. I noticed there was no one behind the counter. My mouth open to call for someone, but then I remembered the sweet treat display.
Before I knew what I was doing, my nose was pressed up against the glass. Wow! They were so pretty, no, pretty isn't good enough. Gorgeous. They were like edible art, mini masterpieces. The cookies were the best, my favorite was iced a light lavender, then had a simple rose in the middle. Well, the rose wasn't really that "simple", more like delicate, fragile, beautiful. I imagined myself in a bakery, such as this, making gorgeous cakes and cute cookies. This thought made me giggle, of course.
Then A voice interrupted my fantasy,"HEY! What are you doing? If you are not going to buy something then GET OUT!!!" Ugh, Mr Shraider. The fat, pudgy guy that owns this place. He's always crabby, obviously. So I gave him the glare. The one that pretty much says shut up or I will seriously injure you. He immediately backed off. I glanced back at the cookies and sighed sadly. Bread, right. I walked up to the counter again, about to ask for bread when screams and sobs interrupted me. What's going on??
I spun around and sprinted out the door. I couldn't see anything, so I pushed through the crowd of sorrowful people. The crowd. The cries. The screams. The crack of..... something? Then I put the pieces together. This is a whipping I was witnessing. Since when are there whippings in District 2?
