For once in my life, I had parted ways with Daniel Shumway, the most important thing in my life. It left a gaping hole in my heart, even if the seperation was only temporary.
He was the only tie I had left to my mother and father.
But no matter. Soon enough we would be reunited and all my worries would evaporate, and we would both laugh at how stupid I had been for thinking the worst.
Daniel had stayed at the one boy's house (probably stuffing his face by now), meanwhile I was out in the woods surrounding District 7, hunting for food for when we finally departed from the abnormal boy. So far I had only caught a fairly fat rabbit and a small squirell.
I glanced at the sky. The sun was already more than halfway set. I suddenly became anxious. Surely that kid wouldn't let us spend the night at his house. And we obviously couldn't leave if all we had to eat was this meager amount of meat.
I was still thinking of this when I heard footsteps. Human ones. They had to be. My heart beat harder, and picked up speed. My pulse quickened. My palms became clammy, making it almost impossible to hold my long hunting knife. Who the hell would be out here at this time of night. Another thought came to me. Who the hell would be out here at all.
I was prepared to throw myself at the person, to stab whoever it was repeatedly in the chest with my already bloodstained blade. I shifted my stance, preared to do just that when the person entered my clearing. And it wasn't a stranger. It was Daniel.
Releif flooded through me, closely followed by annoyance. Hadn't I made it perfectly clear that he was to stay where he was. To not leave the safety of that boy's home. What I was doing was dangerous. If I was caught I would be hauled off and killed. Daniel didn't need that.
"What the hell do you think you are doing out here Mr. Daniel Shumway?"
But before he could answer, there was another set of footsteps. I didn't get quite so worked up this time around. I was sure it was just the boy I had temporarily left in charge of Daniel, chasing after the hyper boy.
Boy was I wrong.
