It was the anniversary of their mother's death. That was why Ki and his brother were making the trip cross-country, all the way back to the farmlands of District 11 that had once been their home.
It was rare for them to find the time to make such a trip, and they certainly didn't have the money for it. But considering how much their mother had sacrificed for them, they knew they owed it to her to make this one trip. And so, for the first time in three years, they returned to their old home.
Much as he had been lulled to sleep by the rhythmic rocking of the train he had stowed away on, Ki was jarred awake as the train came to a rattling stop. Blinking his eyes a bit to refocus them, he looked around for a moment, remembered where he was, then turned and saw his brother still asleep against some nearby crates. Ki shivered a little. For some reason, the train was much colder inside than the actual summer weather outside. This particular car was kept pretty cold, maybe because of some special cargo it was carrying or something.
Normally, Ki and his brother would take this opportunity to steal something from the cargo. But considering the train was sending stuff to the poorer districts, rather than taking from them, there was no way either brother would take something from a place that clearly deserved and needed it.
Shifting into more of a sitting position, Ki swiped a hand across his eyes, then reached out with his other hand lazily to slap Naoki awake. It would be a while before this car was emptied of its cargo, but still...They should get a head-start while they could.
But suddenly, as if to prove him wrong, there was a large creaking sound, and the nearest compartment door was slowly being eased open.
Ki felt his heart skip a few beats, and he spun around, scuttling away from the door and over to his brother, stunned wide awake now. Why were the train men already checking this car? He and his brother had specifically chosen it because it was so close to the middle car of the train, meaning it wouldn't be unloaded for some time. Meaning more time for him and his brother to get off the train.
But apparently he'd been wrong.
"Naoki!" he hissed, shaking his brother by the shoulder. "Naoki!"
He was about to start dragging his brother behind some crates, but it was too late. Someone got on the train. He froze.
