I slip on my bright yellow running shoes and pop in my purple, jeweled earbuds, turning on the music loud. I take long strides down the driveway, heading toward the City Circle. It feels good to stretch my legs out. I fall into an easy jog down the street and take in the houses in my neighbourhood. Some are eccentric colours, like fushia and bright orange, and others are normal, subdued colours. Mine happens to be an eggshell white with red covering the door and shutters. As I exit my neighbourhood, tall buildings rise above the houses. There are stores and little coffee shops dotting the sides of the City Circle, and as I pass my favourite shoe store, I peek in, saying hello to Helisa, the manager.
I continue toward the center of the City Circle, where I can hear a voice above the music in my ears. I pull out my earbuds and slow my pace, listening closer to the voice coming from across the way. It's a girl: I can tell that much. And she sounds good, too. I stride in for a closer look and see that she's a petite girl with medium-length, black hair and stunning green eyes. I recognize her from school: her name is Samantha Elliot, I think. She has a beautiful singing voice that draws me in. I elbow my way to the front of the crowd surrounding her and smile politely at her.[/blockquote][/font]
As I lay on my new turquoise, silk bedsheets, I stare at the wooden fan on my pink ceiling. I watch it go 'round and 'round, hoping for some of the cool air to swoop my way. It doesn't happen. I hop up from the bed and head toward my closet, searching for cooler clothes than what I have on. I pick through and find short jean shorts and a bright blue halter top. I quickly pull them on and skip toward my bathroom. I heat up my lime green straightening iron, run it through my hair making it poker-straight, then pull my hair into a ponytail. My hair falls into a sleek, straight, waterfall of blond down my back. I pull on a matching blue headband and grab my iPod off the desk in my room."Going for a run?" she asks. I nod. "Be back for dinner," she says. "Your father promises he'll be here to eat with us." I mentally roll my eyes and turn around, heading for the door. Dad is a big Capitol surgeon. He helps people with altering their bodies for any such whim they may be feeling that day. Because it is such a demanding job, Dad is hardly around. Thus, the eye rolling via me: I never believe it when my mother says he'll be home for dinner. She says this at least 3 times a week, and none of those times seem to come true.
I jump the 5 steps leading down to the main floor and stroll past my mother's study. I peek in and she's reading a thick, hardcover book. She looks up and smiles, then takes in my clothing.
