“Insanity destroys reason, but not wit.”
Day after day, sun rise, and moon rise. Nothing changed, nothing got any easier. Not once did the pain of losing her brother and her best friend waver or wane in anyway shape or form. And the next Reaping was looming over her as well. Her younger brother Raviv would be eligible for the first time this year. And only three years later, Ilayda would be too. And the worse part was, there would be nothing Naida could do for Raviv if he got reaped, she couldn't volunteer for a boy. And Ilayda... She'd only be able to protect her from her first reaping, after that Naida would be too old for the games, and once again she would be powerless to protect those she loved. Thoughts still haunted her, she should have volunteered for Alba... She could have taken her place, and spared her friend. It would have been best for Naida's sanity as well. If she died then she'd be with Raiden again. But what stopped her was, her younger brother and sister. They still needed her, and her parents would probably go off the deep end if they lost another child. Her fingers grazed across the spear tip hanging from her necklace. It had been her brother's token in the arena. It was all she had that to feel close to him. That and the fact that she could often hear his voice, as well as Alba's, ringing in her ears.
She was on one of the quietest beaches in District Four. Trying to clear her mind and bring home so dinner at the same time. She'd set up a single net, and had her barbed fishing spear in her right hand while she stood waist deep in the water. If there was one thing that would never be taken away from Naida, it was the lessons her brother taught her, including how to fish. Standing complete still before a flicker of movement below the surf triggered her instinct. Striking with her spear she'd skewered a large fish right through the gills. A small smile lit her lately sorrow filled faced. Her family would have a nice meal tonight. Not that they ever went hungry, but days like today when Naida could bring home something special she felt a little bit better about herself. Like maybe, just maybe, she wasn't completely a lost cause. Raiden had always brought home amazing catches for them to eat, her brother had been one of the best fishermen she ever knew, and that wasn't even being bias. She sighed walking onto the sand with her spear and fish, gathering her net on the way in, it had two decent sized fish caught in it. Not bad for today...
