Damn children...
Laure sighed as she removed one of the many pure white rabbits from their prison of rusty chicken wire and grabbed her blade that was missing its handle. The batch this rabbit came from were being raised for the sole purpose of being skinned and probably being made into fur coats no one here could ever afford.
She made sure none of the young children that just got out of school didn't see as she carefully killed the "bunny rabbit" in a way that wouldn't get blood all over its pure white coat before she began to skin it separating the meat into a bowl so it could be taken care of at the slaughter house and be given to the capital.
She could have done this in the stables away from the children, but it was so nice out here and she enjoyed the breeze. The kids that had gazed in horror at what she did to the rabbits were 8 and needed to grow out of that phase soon enough. District 5 supported itself by raising animals just to kill them for their meat. If they wanted to survive there was no room to fill sentimental towards their export.
"Damn you for being so cute," Laure whispered as she grabbed another one and went through the same bloody procedure.
Kids were always here wanting to see them and Laure didn't say much as they looked around and played with them. Her family didn't own this place anymore she was just an employee and the owners didn't mind. The eight and ten-year-olds she would kill in front of for any shred of child-like innocence when it came to this sort of thing would be gone when they understood how harsh their world was where they would have to work long endless hours after school to insure there would be food on table and forced to watch their friends die in the Hunger Games.
But for someone like the cute six year old girl who'd been admiring white bunny with black spots on its ear the other day she made an exception.
"What's going to happen to this one," she noticed it right away since the others didn't have spots.
It's fur wouldn't be suited to fit the needs of the capital since it was flawed and would probably be made into something someone from the district could actually use. Its meat made into a jerky that she could either sell or keep for herself.
"Be made into a jacket," Laure noted.
She frowned as the rabbit pressed it's nose against the wire and she pressed her hands to it. Laure was surprised it didn't bite her as she walked up to the cage and lifted it out of its confines letting her pet it.
She hesitated a little, just like she use to at that age. From the moment she could walk and talk her father showed her not to get too attached to any of the rabbits and she soon found herself not wanting to touch their soft fur even for warmth.
A lot of kids passed through here, but she recognized her as a merchant's daughter who'd probably be stuck in her mom's store all day and not know about the farmer's life as much as Laure did. Perhaps she could spare her a little.
Laure put her cynicism to the side as she played with the rabbit's ears, "You know I haven't seen many like this before, with spots just randomly showing up that way...maybe it will make a good pet for someone, don't you think?"
"For the capital?"
Laure shook her head, "Your mom just over there isn't she? Ask her if you can have it. These type of rabbits can like rats as long as they get a carrot once in a while, and maybe it can have babies one and day and-
She stopped there not wanting to tell her it would be a good deal because rabbits bred in incredible numbers and it would be an endless supply of stew. By the time Laure recollected her thoughts the little girl had ran off to her mother just to be scolded about how they couldn't spare any carrots and she shouldn't wonder off.
The little girl gave her a brief wave before being dragged off and Laure sighed putting the rabbit back. It was too big to be a pet for anyone in the capital, and it really wasn't her property to be giving away.
At least she tried to do something good in this world that left no room time wise and monetary wise to do a good deed.
