I watch Alex run over to find something, and it seems like the energy is just about to burst out of him. I smile softly, my eyes sparkling, and glance out, across the water. It glints in the sunlight, and I have to look away because it hurts my eyes. I wonder if Alex loves it here as much as I do. I dig my toes into the soft sand, and it surrounds them like a mold. It's warm, too, and for a moment, I long to dip them in the water again. But I decide not to, at least, not until Alex gets back.
When he comes back with mushrooms, I grin. I've always been cautious of mushrooms, because some are poisonous, so instinct tells me to keep my distance. But if Alex is holding them, they must be safe, so instead of taking a step back, I take a step forward. I glance toward the area he found them, a perfectly ordinary spot where no one would have seen anything out of place. Realization washes over me.
"You've been here before, haven't you?" I say, and don't bother to wait for an answer. "The mushrooms are amazing."
I look out toward the ocean, breathing in the salty scent with my eyes closed. The air here is so warm, so soft. The wind is gentle now, but I've heard enough stories about how hard the wind can blow since there is nothing to block it.
The sun beats down hard, and I feel my forehead getting damp with sweat. I open my eyes, squinting them slightly. The water looks so inviting...
"Is the water safe to swim in?" I ask. "I mean, I've heard that there are some dangerous creatures in the water, but I'm not sure if that's true or not."
