Dimity was named after her paternal grandmother, who had to be the most self-effacing and modest old woman that had ever lived. No, really. (Well, at least that’s what it had looked like, anyway.) She [the elderly Dimity] was always so sweet and kind, and always had a reason to be meek and unpretentious, even when no guests are ever over. She had died in her early fifties, just a mere year after Dimity the younger was born. The name ‘Dimity’ comes from the name of an unpretentious sheer cotton fabric that is textured with checks or stripes in the weaving, quite fitting to Dimity’s own modest personality. Being from District 8, the District of Texiles, it was almost expected of them to have a fabric-related name, and Dimity is just that, a fabric-related name. Jane, her middle name, had actually not much of a very sophisticated past, not passed down from generation to generation like her first and last names are. ‘Jane’ had, though, been the name of a heroine in a popular vignette story, and her mother had loved that name right away. Her surname, ‘Lowell’, is an old European surname, not very common anymore when you think of the demographics. Dimity is commonly referred to as ‘Demi’ or ‘Jane’, and only called her full name when her parents are angry or upset with her.

Dimity was born some blisteringly warm July morning, sometime during the 47th to the 48th Hunger Games. The hot weather shocked everyone. It was actually not that common in their part of Panem. See, District 4 is more known for warm weather, or maybe District 11, the District of agriculture. But District 8 was never known for its weather. It was known for wonderful fabrics and papers. Her grandpa had claimed that the correspondence of the warmest day of the year and the birth of his grandchild on the same date was a sign, and it would make the child either the most fiery and feisty or warm-hearted and kind girl there is. Now, this is funny, because modest little Dimity is anything but feisty. Dimity was born under the Zodiac sign of a Cancer, and according to the zodiac personality, she is supposed to be highly caring, generous, and intuitive. Dimity has failed all Cancer requirements.

If you think about it, ‘Dimity’ is actually quite an androgynous name, if her feminine middle name doesn’t give away her gender otherwise. Dimity never had the privilege of buying bows (the hair-tying kind, mind you) and ribbons, although she never wishes for her parents to be richer, either. She doesn't want to live in District 1 or 2, because the Peacekeepers has got to be more strict than they are here. Even as a poor and unprivileged girl, she always stops at the market stall where they sell ribbons and hairbands, though, admiring the richer people of the District who had gotten the lovely advantage of decorating their already-lovely hair with colorful ribbons and shiny headbands, whereas they never had the money for such luxury. What makes up for her lack of feminine curves she has in her rounded face, long eyelashes, and her petite hands and feet. Dimity is, though, very hunched, not at all elegant or girlish in her posture. Dimity had once fancied a teenage boy who carried rolls of fabric in his wagon for the local fabric company, but she scarcely sees him around anymore.

District 8
Being born, raised, and identified as a District 8 citizen, Dimity could think of no other place that she could make a living of and for. But the other Districts have been something of a background noise for her, anyways. (She's never curious about places she'll never go to, anyways). She’s read about the other Districts in the textbooks, but could never think that their places could be as good as her good-old District of Fabrics. And even if given the opportunity to move, Dimity probably won't want to.

Dimity has a rounded face, her jaw curved and gradually tapering down to a gentle point. Her wide blue eyes are deep-set into her skull, and her eyelashes are quite long; jokingly, people would tell her to go curl them sometimes. Her nose is slightly bigger than the average nose, but the arch is not very prominent, making the nose itself button-like. Her lips are slight and, like everything else about this girl, not very prominent. She has a slight overbite that could get corrected-that is, if she could afford it.

Dimity has shoulder-length chocolate colored hair that has a naturally thick and wavy texture, and it is quite prone to dandruff and itchiness, but Dimity is rather sensible, and usually gives her hair a good wash whenever she could afford to, wanting to look her best. Her face-it's not the desired tan. It is rather a fair ivory color, and she is often compared to a living doll. Her skin could be compared to shades of porcelain, too, only broken by the light acne spotting against her forehead and hair. It could usually be covered by hair, so it is less-than-noticeable. The freckles are more prominent, spilling over her cheeks and dusting against her nose delicately.

Demi is just over the 5'1 mark. And to think that long ago, most people got to grow well over 5'6. But now, environmental changes and weak accessibility to nourishment has rendered most of Panem well-under 5'0. (Says her uncle, anyways.) She is slightly better built than the average skinny child, and weighs 128lbs. Unlike her round, cherubic face, her body and limbs are more comprised of less-than-circles-her arms are rather long in proportion, with a thin layer of fat present as well, and her legs and calves better-muscled than her arms, thankfully.

Her posture, though, is a whole different story. Girls are taught to behave with elegance and grace, with a natural posture. Demi can often be seen idly slumping, spine curled to an awkward point, her arms crossed and her weight leaning on one leg, the other one either crossed around the dominant and weight-supporting leg or lightly touching the ground with her heel. Dimity isn't one of the elegant girls.

How many times have people been seeing an apparently ‘shy’ and cherubic young woman, only for the woman to ‘warm up’ in time and become your best friend in time? It may take a day of talking and socializing. Maybe a few months for the most introverted girls. Some people may actually pretend to be shy to beef up the men that want bashful girls! Well, when dealing with Dimity, she is not only shy on first impression, but she always and forever will be what she is on first impression. And that is: shy and quiet, docile and compliant. Not exactly ‘shy’ in the way that newborn fawns or baby chicks are ‘shy’, but more like the reluctance of asserting herself, the avoiding other people kind of shy. It won’t make much sense unless you see her. Dimity is not jumpy or nervous, and she isn’t usually scared, either.

Dimity is docile and quiet, usually blinking dully in the corner of a room, unassuming of the world around her, leading many to debate about her intelligence (or more appropriately, lack of) at questionable times, even though that assumption is quickly snuffed out when Dimity is actually engaged in intelligent conversation about different kinds of fabrics and art with professionals. At first glance, she’s just a slumped and lazy girl. Perhaps, if she had grown up in a relatively different world, maybe she would have been good material as an artist, but she has no money to buy a sketchbook or paints. All the paper their district produces is shipped off to the Capitol. (She enjoys the little things in life, mainly food.)

Dimity loves facts and is a curious girl when and if a topic of interest ever springs up. She can easily stare at something for hours at a time, whereas most would get bored and leave around the two-minute mark, she could stare for an hour, picking off more and more detail. She is an observant girl, she is. She doesn’t go around, droning, ‘Why? Why? Why?’ all the time, but she is on the higher end of the spectrum when it comes to intelligence, even though she may not look the type. She would almost always approach a problem logically, looking for ways to solve a problem as non-violently as possible. Dimity likes it when problems are solved without a hitch. And she’s not exactly rebellious, either. Problems are usually just a background noise for her, and she is rather selfish in that way as well, only solving her own problems.

Oh, and anything else? She loves the smell of lemons.

Dimity Lowell is a simple girl with sloppy writing, and however sloppy her work may be, her words will never be sloppy. As a child, she loved using long words from the worn dictionary she's seen at the local bookstores, and usually she was encouraged to cross over to the bookstore to read while her parents sold from their butcher shop. Dimity was an only child, and preferred it that way. She couldn't think about sharing their tiny house, not that she hated sharing things. She simply couldn't imagine what it would be like if a little sibling was running around after her all the time. And the things Dimity can't fathom, she usually doesn't dwell on them.

As a five-year-old, she remembered raising a pair of chicks behind her parents' butcher shop, blowing bubbles from a full bucket of soap, and listening to the sounds around her, like flowing water. She would head to the bookstore which happened to be across the street, and even though most of the books were worn and tattered, seeing that Panem never loved books anyways, they were readable, and any time Dimity's parents were working, she would go to the bookstore. Bits and fragments of her childhood are what she cares to remember, and no one could remember everything, not even if they have Dimity's photogenic memory.

At the age of seven, Dimity contracted a case of measles, which thankfully wasn't as severe as her parents have thought of it. But District 8 wasn't known for its advanced medical technology, and-she didn't remember most of it, but pretty soon after the measles, she found that she was no longer able to hear things as well. It feels like-it's hard to describe, but it feels like as if someone wrapped bubble wrap around her head and forced her to go around with it, the amount increasing by the day. At first, it was scarcely noticeable, but gradually, bits of her sense of hearing was robbed. Dimity has become another victim to Sensorineural hearing loss. It's claimed lots. Babies from genetics. Workers from workplace noise. But to claim a seven-year-old discovering her world's hearing, it just seems particularly cruel. Babies never knew a world of noise. Workers probably can handle it.

Dimity didn't become exactly closed off, but as she found herself concentrating more to hear things, she just didn't focus as much altogether, never really listening to instruction and just...sitting there. She's never told anyone of her bilateral hearing loss because-one, it's slight, and she's just glad that the measles left, and two, that there are lots of people that suffer more, that die daily. She was lucky she had both parents, almost everyone is an orphan in the districts. But that doesn't exactly mean that she can always keep her head up. So it stays down with her thoughts.

She's become something of a background noise in the District, as if she was ever noisy to begin with. But as a little child, she liked to sing. 'Mountain airs', they were called, or something. Now she scarcely raises her voice.

But lots of good have come into Demi's life, as well. Even though they were never well-off, their family has enough money to send the girl to school. She's seen the kids in the community home or the kids who-she couldn't quite place a name on it, but the few hunched-back kids that shuffle around the marketplace trying to find jobs or people they could work for as a shoe-polisher or worse can't possibly be nameless, either. They were well-off enough so that they didn't have to starve. They were well-off enough so that Demi has a good education. She spends most of her time while not at work in their family business at the library, spending time on books and stories.

She had never been reaped, and she never wants to, either. Thankfully she's been lucky by far. Four more reapings to go, and she's permanently safe. She can afford to wait in suspense for four more years, easy.

I have an introductory thread, but I'm Hemi the newbie. I'm quite lost, but nice to meet you all. :3 I feel foolish for introducing myself on the comments section, but I'm a lovely awkward person anyways.

This girl-to put it simply, if you are too lazy to read the paragraphs, she's a slightly deaf but intelligent girl who is shy and has posture problems and likes the smell of lemon. ^_^
