Through all the noise when I pass through the market, I hear a snicker nearby. Someone is suddenly shoved into me, and they pull back quickly, staring at me in surprise and slight disgust. They glare in the direction of another person, who is laughing hystericly for some reason.
"Sorry," the person mutters, shoving their way back into the crowd.
"It's fine!" I call after them. "Accidents happen!"
Some people who saw turn to stare at me, and some shake their heads in puzzlement. I laugh at their confusion, and continue making my way through the crowd, a soft little smile on my face.
The people of District 8 are just so nice.
Finally, I'm out of the shoving, noisy crowd and back onto the forgotten road that leads to my home in the feilds. It's more quiet on this road, even though many people use it to get through to other little groups of houses that branch farther away from the market. I've always loved this road, mostly because it always stays the same, unlike everything else, that is constantly changing. It's a dirt road, the dust spread out unevenly as it cuts through the peacefullness of the feilds. Long stretches of grass are to my right and cotton trees blocking the view are to the right. Shadows stretch and bend over and around the road, and birds chirp far off. It's getting late- the sun is setting- so I hear bugs buzzing in the grasses. It's still incredibly warm, and the air is thick and humid. I think I see a lightning bug wink in the distance. I walk slowly, enjoying the lazy feel of things, that soft little smile still playing on my lips.
I have memories of running down this road as a little girl, diving out into the fields to catch butterflies, or at night, fireflies like the one I just saw. Those memories seem worn and faded, for I've often pulled them out of the back of my mind when I'm alone.
I barely notice the noise in the trees near me, but when I do, I turn my head curiously towards it.
"Hello?" I call out towards the noise.
