I woke up late, too late to get any good hunting in. But I ventured into the woods anyway. I didn't bring Frik or Frak, my bone and teeth pistols, because I wasn't expecting any real trouble. All I had was my bone armor and my swords, enough for maybe even a few wild dogs, but not what I see now.
I'd been wandering the woods for a few hours when I heard a noise I'd heard before. A low, inhuman growl, followed by a piercing shriek that I had heard before- the screech of a wild dog. I immediately hit the dirt, then I get a good look at the beast. First I see the mangled corpse of a wild dog, then I slowly shift my gaze up to find out what killed the poor dog. The following moments are terrifying. It's a huge bear, standing it must be twelve feet tall, and it has manged skin, and Foaming at the mouth. Rabies,I think. I involuntarily give a small yelp. *You idiot! I think to myself. I can only hope it doesn't see me.
Sometimes hope isn't enough.
The bear drops the half eaten dog corpse and looks directly at me. As soon as we make eye contact, it lets out a roar that may make my ears bleed. I shoot off running towards the District as fast as I can. I know looking back at it will only slow me down. I can't fight the urge, the temptation is too strong. I look back to see it charging at me, and gaining fast. I turn my head just in time to realize that I am going to plummet down a craggy cliff face and into a stream of raging rapids. I stop, but I have to do it so suddenly that As lose my footing. As I tumble over the edge, I somehow catch hold of a stray root. I dangle there a few seconds, relief flooding me. Then I hear another roar, and I look up to see thebear's frightening face peering over the edge at me.It surveys me hungrily, as if it is deciding which parts will taste the best. It begins to raise its arm to claw me. I scream at to frighten it away, but as I knew, that doesn't work. I do the only thing I can do: I let go. I land in the rapids and they sweep me away. I hit a rock, and the only thing that keeps my ribs from cracking is my bone armor, which I do feel snap. I am dragged under, and my head hits a rock. Black floaters invade my vision, and bubbles are the last thing I see.
I slowly open my eyes. I'm in a part of the woods I'm not familiar with, I'm injured, and my armor is damaged. I stroke the back of my head, which is soaked with blood and feels like ground meat. It hurts terribley, but there doesn't seem to be a concussion. Nothing else seems to be injured, which is amazing due to how dangerous rapids are. My swords seem to be undamaged, but my armor is a different story. The chest piece, which is made from the ribcage of a deer, is broken. It's missing three ribs and another two are cracked. Because of the nature of bone, the whole thing will need to be replaced. I hear the crunch of dead leaves. There is something coming my way- human or not.
