Caspian Mathers

Caspian stood in front of the giant screen mounted on a building in District four. He was surrounded by people on every side, yet he was completely alone.
All he could do was stare up at the screen, his whole body numb and his eyes stinging with tears he refused to shed.
He had refused to watch this scene when it happened live during the Games. He had turned away and could only listen to the sounds that poured from the speakers. The sounds of a knife meeting soft flesh, blood spurting, then the drag of a final breath.
However while watching the recap video during the post Games ceremony the scene popped up so suddenly that his eyes were glued to the screen before he had time to move them away.
He gritted his teeth as he watched his little sister, practically the only family he had left, plunge her knife into her own stomach to free her killer of his guilt.
It was just like Windy to do something like that.
Caspian felt his bottom lip quiver and he looked down to hide it. He was trying to get his breathing under control but when people tried to comfort him by placing a hand on his shoulder, all it did was make him want to sob more. Finally he tugged away from a hand and tried to push his way through the crowd that had joined to watch the mandatory program.
He bumped into someone as the urge to sob overwhelmed his will to stay emotionless.

Lacy Spear

Lacy was miserable and morose. The square was crowded and stuffy and unpleasant. The replay of the Games was playing. She felt like her world was falling apart and she couldn't figure out why. Just as she was about to slip away, back to her corner of the world she saw him, Caspian. His scar made him stand out almost anywhere, but that wasn't just it. His face was desolate and removed. Lacy's eyes flicked to the screen and she figured out why. Windy, his little sister that she sometimes watched while he went fishing, had just committed suicide. Lacy quickly looked away, not wanting to see more.

Just then Caspian bumped into her, sending her stumbling backwards. He was too miserable for her to be mad. "Caspian? Are you OK? That's a stupid question." Lacy paused, frustrated at not knowing what to say. "Do you want to talk? We don't have to be here." She said gently, hesitantly.

Caspian Mathers

Caspian let out a choking, suffocated sob and regained his composure turning tot he person he had bumped into. It was a younger girl around Windy's age. He searched his brain for her name, grateful for a distraction even if it was only temporary.
"Lacy," He began, he was always good with names. "I think that's a wonderful idea."
Suddenly cheers tore through the square from the speakers as it showed Arbor Halt of District 12 wearing his crown on the stage in front of the Capitol.
Caspian hated him above anyone else on the planet.
There were many things about this boy that Caspian disliked:
1. The fact that he tore down the walls of reality and won as a blind tribute. Others might consider this an amazing quality but Caspian couldn't help but loath the fact that this scum from 12 who wasn't even healthy enough to see, got to come home to his family when someone who actually saw the faces of dying children and blood on the cold snow didn't.
2. It would have been different if that Jared kid had won. Windy actually wanted him to win, she said so herself. She had shed her own blood so he wouldn't feel guilty about winning. However that stupid blind kid got in the way.

Caspian couldn't bare to go on with his list and started walking away from the square hoping Lacy followed. They couldn't really leave the area since viewing was mandatory, but a Peacekeeper wasn't going to shoot a person that only wanted some brief privacy. Especially if that person contributed to the fish that were brought ashore for the Peacekeeper's belly.

"What do you want to talk about?" Caspian said trying to give a smile but ended up grimacing as if he was in pain, and he was. A pain so deep that it just wouldn't leave, and Caspian feared it never will.

Lacy followed Caspian, warily glancing around for any Peacekeepers. She walked beside him as they headed down a street. 'Well... umm..." Lacy mumbled. She knew Caspian wouldn't want to talk about anything remotely related to the Hunger Games. "My father got a new boat. You know how he is so greedy and cheap? Well his old boat finally kicked the bucket and sank, with him on board. He nearly drowned. That convinced him, well that and my mothers hysterics when she found out. In a way, it was kind of funny." Lacy smiled, hoping the story would distract Caspian from his pain.

As they rounded a corner Lacy gently grabbed Caspian's hand and dragged him down a narrow alley and through a tunnel. At the end of the tunnel was a little garden complete with a pond. She went and sat at a little bench, tucked into a corner. She patted the space next to her. "I come here a lot. My family owns the land, I don't know why. We made it into a garden last summer. I've come here a lot ever since. No one knows it even exists. I'd like to keep it that way." Lacy glanced meaningfully at Caspian.

Nadia Tosser: 1/24 thats the chance that everybody in the games gets. But being a career increased your odds tenfold. That is if u have the guts and ambition to volunteer. District 4 has always had that advantage, and the one year that no one from our district did volunteer we had a surprise, a girl doing great but we were still punished, and she killed herself to ease the pain on others. Maybe if i had volunteered last year i could've done it, the competition was really a week year with only 2 true careers. But theres no point using hind site just go forward. And try not to notice crying caspian over his dead sister.
