Lyst stared up at the sky through the trees. She needed to hurry up, pick these oranges, and get out of here. People were always telling her hurry up. They didn't know that her life was already rushing past, and would shatter soon enough.
She just wanted to slow down.
So she jumped down from the branches and angrily shoved her sack of fruit into someone's arms. It isn't their fault, she told herself. It was always her own fault.
She was sprinting through the orchard, to get away from eveyone. The truth of what was happening pressed down on her.
She was dead. No, at least not yet. The disease locked away in her body was coming closer and closer to killing her, though. Every day she was a little bit closer to an imminent death.
Lyst slumped down into the dirt, and covered her head.
