Robin
As soon as I walk into the nailcare store, the receptionist looks up from her desk and smiles at me. She glances behind her at a man with spiky green hair that reminds me of grass.
"Cicero, honey? Robin's here."
The familiar face of my nail-painter turns towards me and opens into a wide smile.
"Mondays are yellow! Take a seat, honey."
I sit down in my usual place. I am a regular here, I come every morning before I fetch Kit his morning coffee: a milky latte with cream, strawberries and blackcurrant sauce, and pick up his mail at the office. Each day of the week is a different nail colour, and just as Cicero has pointed out: Monday's are yellow.
Almost immediately after the last coat of polish is on my little finger, I sweep my papers of the table and thank Cicero before promptly leaving the store.
When I walk into the tailoring room there are several racks of clothing were waiting to be fitted, I can see myself in the huge wall mirror as I put everything I am holding on Kit's desk. The phone rings as I am flicking through the messages and letters for anything particularly important. I lean across the table and press speaker, then scribble down a quick note about trimming. The caller has just hung up when Kit walks in, his trouses today are red with blue roses, the same pattern on the alice band I am wearing.
"Good morning, Robin."He smiles at me brightly and throws his yellow trench coat at the stand. I hold out his coffee and he smiles at me again, gratefully, as he takes a sip.
"Anything interesting?"He gestures at the bundle of papers on the desk.
"Flaccus wants you to design him a costume for a snow-themed party-"
"Snow?"Kit interupts, frowning.
"I think it's something to do with the Games. The deadline for that is Thursday. Also, Vesta is inviting us both to her party next Saturday and the theme is gold. Oh, and Rufus was looking for those icicle things to trim something."
The average start to a Monday.
Everyone is weary as we pack away, Kit hands me an alice band with yellow and purple pinstripes before I leave.
"I'm going to stay behind with Rufus and work on this idea I had for a dress inspired by spiders."
I smile, amused, at his over-eager eyes,
"I'll see you tomorrow, remember Athena's dropping by in the morning."
He nods at me absently as he walks down the corridor. Someone opens the door for me and I walk past her, wondering what she had done to become an avox, and not even considering why.
