I wake up on my cot on the back porch. My back hurts from the hard cot, as usual, and I go inside for breakfast. Breakfast is always just the leftovers that the dog doesn't eat first. I get a small bite of egg and a sip of orange juice before my parents throw them away, and then I go outside to the stable, pulling my black bandana over my nose and mouth. I pass my little sister's pony, Pink, and mount my jet black horse, Raine. Angel got her pony from my parents for her fourth birthday. I got mine for my tenth birthday from my employer and friend. Angel has always been my parents' favorite. They never wanted a son. They've told me that countless times. They even treat the dog better than me, letting him be inside and giving him leftovers before they give some to me. I sigh and lightly dig my heels into Raine's sides, starting off at a steady trot. As usual, I start at a back trail that leads into the neighboring mountains and forests until the path disappears completely. Raine and I know where we're going, though. We keep going up a steep incline through woods that I know like the back of my hand. As we go, I keep hearing branches breaking somewhere nearby, always getting closer. I'm not worried. The wildlife in these parts are friendly to me and trust me. But Raine, usually so calm and composed, keeps tossing his head and whinnying. I stroke his neck and murmur comforting words, but he begins to panic. The ground evens out and I bring Raine to a stop, looking around nervously at the trees. Suddenly, a large wolf with matted fur and a bloodstained mouth bursts out of the trees. This isn't one of the usual animals. This is some deranged beast, wandering the mountains in search of prey. Raine rears up on his hind legs, sending me flying. I hit the ground hard and the world starts spinning. I can make out a solid black shape, Raine, galloping around the clearing. A gray shape, obviously the wolf, stands nearby, approaching slowly and with a menacing growl emanating from its throat. I never come out here armed. I have nothing to defend myself with. I let out a shout for help as the wolf moves closer. I close my eyes and wait for the end to come.
