I had just entered the grain field when I heard the noise. It was a low guttural growl. At first I thought it was a simple dog. Then I listened closer to the sound. It was a mix between a wolf's howl and dog's growl and a bear's snarl. It had to be a muttation.
" Mutt!" I screamed. I bolted out of the fields and toward the town. If I could only reach the outskirts I'm sure a Peacekeeper could deal with the thing. I turned back to see all of the field workers running for the district behind me. Then I saw the Mutt. It was a monstrous thing. It looked like a bear but it had the speed of a dog and the ferocity of a rabid wolf. I turned back and felt a sharp crack across my face. I fell back in a daze. I open my eyes to see a burly Peacekeeper looming over me.
" Get back to you work you lazy fool!" He snarled. Boy, what a lovely Saturday, I thought . I pointed toward the Muttation barreling toward the town.
" Muttation... deadly... Help." I managed to sputter. The peacekeeper looked up. The look I saw on his face almost made me laugh. His face turned white and he turned toward the guard tower.
" Sound the alarm!" He cried. I let out the Song Of Warning. A four note tune I had established with the field workers and the nearby orchard workers. Everyone rushed to my side, armed with sharpened sticks and lengthened knives. The Peacekeeper turned around, anger clear on his face again.
"Arming the residents is punishable by death!" He hissed.
" Oh come on, you know you can't take this thing alone and the Capitol won't help!" I replied. The peacekeeper sighed and turned back to the tower. My best friend, Karth came up beside me, a steel dagger in hand.
" What's up?" He asks calmly. I point toward the mutt again. It had slowed to a stop and was battling a stray dog.
" Great. All we need is a mutt kicking around." Karth growls. I hear the signal to attack and we charge forward. It's gonna be a long morning, I think bitterly.
