The sun is out -
the sky is blue
there’s not a cloud
to spoil the view
but it’s raining -
raining in my heart
Dittany Briar Gray was snuggled up against one of her favorite trees. A massive apple tree--one she had climbed many times before and hopefully would continue to. Dittany let a tear escape, she watched as it dripped from her cheek down onto the material of her shirt. It was a sunday, sunny, nice, a soft breeze making leaves flutter down from the tree and scatter on the ground which young Dittany sat on. It had been a rough morning, the girl had gotten an earful from her older sister, Ash after having discovered Dittany had failed some test at school on edible herbs. Secretly she'd failed it on purpose to see if Ash would notice, or care.
She shook her head, when had life become such a hassle? Sure her belly wasnt always full, and sometimes the weather was atrocious, but when had life become a full-time job for Dittany? She felt as though slowly something had been eating her heart away, breaking it, making her more machine than human. Ash, even though she was such a lame sister, had fun. Dittany knew because sometimes when she walked in after a hard day, she had a huge smile on her face, and would be humming. It seemed cruel that Dittany could not share this happiness, like she shared everything else with her sister.
Earlier that morning, the teen had gone to trade some of the cloth from an old shirt of her fathers for some dry food, and had been accompanied by a few friends. The trio had laughed and had a jolly good time, but still Dittany felt empty. She put her hands on her head, she contineud t o replay her day, from walking home, to putting away the food to sitting on the kitchenette floor sobbing, to running here. It had been a bitter-sweetday for Dittany. The breeze blew her wild brown hair to the side, revealing her face for the most part. The usual mask she had worn for so many years, was in place. After having used it during so many good and bad times, it had become second-nature for her to wear it even when alone.
The mask hadnt always been there either.
