Anna yawned sleepily, shading her eyes from the bright sunlight. All of her chores were done for today, and it was still rather early. What to do with her free time? The best thing seemed to be nothing; to just sit there and watch people walk by. Her younger brother Brandon ran past her, laughing madly and clutching what appeared to be a pink shirt belonging to her mother. She didn't really know, or want to know what he was going to do with it, and pretended to not notice him.
She leaned back against the fence post and yawned again. Bright sunlight like this made her sleepy, for some reason. Something soft brushed against her knee, startling her, until she realized it was only one of their many cats.
"Hello, cat," Anna murmured, scratching the small animal on its chin. Purring, it licked her hand with its rough tongue before settling down on her lap. From the animal's round belly, Anna could tell kittens would be coming quite soon. She made a mental note to keep an eye on this cat, just to be safe.
Aside from Brandon's laughter and the cat's purring, it was almost silent. It was a perfect day, and Anna was almost completely happy. Of course, there was always that small corner of her brain, constantly worrying about that horrible what-if; the Games. She would never be completely happy until the day of her youngest brother Robin's 19th birthday, when she would know that her family was now completely safe from it. Her mother said there was no reason to worry about it, but that was silly. There was always the possibility of it happening. Always.
The cat stretched lazily, poking Anna's leg with its tiny claws before darting off under the fence and across the road to who-knows-where. She wondered idly where cats went when they ran off like that; they always seemed so sure of where they were going. Soon she dozed off, sitting where she was, dreaming of sunny days and secret cat hiding places.
