((Please read Kardin’s bio before you read this))
Kardin was in front of his house, playing with the grass in his front yard.
He brushed his fingers through the blades. He felt the dew on his fingers. He saw a dandelion and picked it, observing it carefully with bright eyes, fascinated with its every color, shape, and texture. He slowly took in things any normal person would brush by in an instant. This simple flower captivated him. Everything captivated him.
This is how Kardin sees the world.
Out of the corner of his eye, Kardin notices something new; black and red, round, shiny, moving. He drops the dandelion to see what it is. The little red creature with a round, spotted shell is a ladybug, a rare sight in District 3, where most small creatures have become extinct due to the terrible pollution that their bodies can not handle. This is also something brand new to Kardin, and he is immediately enthralled. He reaches out to touch it.
Before he can come in contact with it, the red shell opens, and the wings burst forward, carrying the ladybug away into the air. Kardin thrusts his hand into the air trying to catch it, but it’s gone from the place where his hand closes before he can capture it. However, he doesn’t give up there. The slightly tall teenager gets to his feet, following the little bug flies away from his house; away from the safety of his yard.
The ladybug takes him quite a far way; it’s not fast, but it seems to know how to dodge his hands and it often flies too high for Kardin to reach. Kardin doesn’t even realize he’s not home anymore. He’s so transfixed on the tiny shiny red creature that everything else around him has disappeared. His only goal is to catch it.
After several minutes, the insect gets tired. Its wings begin to slow, it dips just low enough into the air, and Kardin snatches it. He opens his hand and looks at his catch. The bright red shell is cracked, the wings are askew, it doesn’t move. It’s not so captivating anymore.
No longer interested, Kardin drops the body of the ladybug and looks around, everything rematerializing in his mind. He sees a fence nearby, with a sign he can’t read: Mine Testing Facility – Do Not Enter. There’s a road near the fence, and a large building puffing smoke past the fence and in the distance. But he doesn’t see his house or the little yard with the grass and the dandelions. Nothing is familiar. This isn’t his home. Kardin feels himself start to panic.
He doesn’t feel safe here. He’s lost.
((Does this sound too much more like a story than an intro? PM me if you have any contructive criticism.))
