Sometimes Devyni wondered if he was adopted. The entire Auksas family had some knack for parties. Krysta's was attending them; she had an instinctive understanding of what to wear, how to act, and when to leave that boggled Devyni. Their parents, who had taught themselves to throw massive fundraising galas for their business, were masters of throwing them; Sawa decorated, Sonia played host, and every event they touched turned out to be a smash. Devyni's talent, if it could be called such, revolved around making everyone else feel uncomfortable.

He was trying, more for his parents' sake than anything else. They hadn't always been in town for all of Devyni's or Krysta's birthdays, but they always made it back for milestones, and for his eighteenth they had gone all out. The entire house was decorated in shades of red and orange, including an array streamers and tablecloths had to have been bought specifically for today; all of his favorite foods had been made or ordered; someone had even jerry-rigged the old sound system into functionality and was playing some sort of electric jazz that he didn't recognize but really, really liked. It was an impressive display, and he appreciated the time and effort that had gone into it. And if it had been put together for him and his family, he would probably even be enjoying it, regardless of the fact that he'd far rather be writing about the supposed societal significance of turning eighteen than actually experiencing it.

The problem was everyone else. Somehow Sawa and Sonia had decided that they should invite half the Capitol, and either they hadn't run the invite list past their daughter or Krysta had a secret vendetta toward her brother, because everyone had showed up. Perhaps if he'd been warned it would have been easier—but then again, perhaps not, and it was a moot point because they'd wanted to surprise him and had little trouble doing so (after all, who would barge into his room to deliberately give it away?). Between relatives he hadn't seen in months (Have a cute girlfriend yet? No? Boyfriend? Well, why not? How's school? You're really growing up on us!) and people he had spent months deliberately avoiding (Shit no, is my entire class here or does it just feel like it, someone tell me Krysta had some say in the invitations, she'd at least have the sense to trash Marco's.), Devyni had soared past his social tolerance point in two hours and was now pouring all his energy into not offending the entire crowd. It was a close thing, accomplished so far only with copious doses of chocolate cake and his sister's intervention (although Krysta's advice was variable and not always helpful: Smile more. No, not like that, you look like a skeleton—okay, forget the smiling. Relax. Leave your hair alone, it's fine. Show some excitement, it's your birthday! Oh my god, Devyni, would it kill you to say more than five words in a row? No, no, you don't have to carry on like that, just have a normal conversation. You can do that, right? No, apparently not... Hey, didn't I already say to quit it with the hair? I swear to god, if I have to rescue you one more time—!).

By the time the clock hit four, he was done. As close to an anxious wreck as he had ever been, breath short and hair disastrous, he slunk into a closet with a slice of cake and a fork and squirmed as far in as he could manage without getting icing on the coats. It wasn't comfortable, but it was also the only room in the house where he could get away with not talking to anyone; at this point even the piano room was occupied, his bedroom would be the first place anyone looked, and people would notice if one person stayed in the bathroom indefinitely.

Even the closet would eventually prove unsafe. Devyni had just finished his cake and was finally getting his heartbeat (and his hair) back to manageable levels when the door swung open. With an undignified yelp he fell back into the coats, sacrificing his plate to catch himself against the back wall.

Squinting into the new light, he managed to make out Felix's face. He almost fell again, this time in relief, but managed to turn the motion into stooping to pick up the plate. Fighting to keep edges of hysteria from bubbling into his voice, he spoke as he straightened and peered cautiously over Felix's shoulder. "Please. Name your price and get me out of here."

((Well, that was... a post that happened. Ripred but I hate starters. I kind of gave up near the end--hope it still works.))

Parties were not Felix’s specialty. Often times he found himself simply standing in the way of others. On top of everything he didn’t feel very responsible. All he had to do was send out the invitations and get the stuff. Afterward he was the only one who helped clean up which mainly consisted of cleaning dishes, picking up clothes, removing decorations, and getting people to appropriate sleeping locations in case they passed out, which meant giving up his own bed and sleeping on the couch. He never looked forward to having parties.

There was something different about birthday parties though. It always meant making another person’s day special and allowing them to have the uttermost joy on the anniversary of their birth. Receiving gifts from other and just having a little bit of fun. Being able to laugh a little and just relax for a moment or two. Felix simply enjoyed helping out though in order to make a person’s life that much more special. It made his day, and it especially would make his day if he made Devyni happy.

As of late though Felix noticed that Devyni wasn’t feeling as happy as he could’ve been, and in return that upset Felix. Seeing Devyni always in that same business like state. Always so consumed in his own works and not being able to visit with Felix. He disliked it, and that’s why he wanted to give Devyni a reminder of sorts. He wanted to give Devyni something to remember him by. A token of appreciation a person could say. It wasn’t really a token of anything, but gratitude towards him.

He didn’t have much to give to Devyni anyways but it was the thought that counted, and the thought that he hoped Devyni would admire. That’s when the hunt began. The party had been going on for several hours now. He had only seen Devyni a handful of times, not really daring to get close enough to give Devyni his gift. Most of the time he was too busy filling champagne glasses for the more mature crowds of people that his parents had invited, or answering the door. One or the more notable things was the pile of presents that Devyni and his family had started to accumulate. About three fourths of it he assumed was for Devyni and the other third was for his parents in order to compensate for whatever reason they had to compensate for.

However, Felix was on an adventure to find Devyni not to observe everything else. At first, Felix went to Devyni’s room, which only ended up being filled with papers and files and such. Opening the closet up and looking in there making sure that he wasn’t hiding in there or anything. No such luck, that’s when things started to look grim. Felix eventually lost hope and decided to give up. That’s when the idea of going outside and going for a walk in the chilly autumn air popped into his mind.

“Where could he be?” He had no idea whatsoever where his friend could be, and currently at that time he didn’t expect to see his friend and master for a while. That was, until he opened up the door to the closet. With a yelp coming from Devyni, and him falling deeper into the coats. All he could do was smile. He pulled out a small notepad and a pen, and in his neatest writing he scribbled on it, “Teehee, Hide N’ Go Seek is over

”

Just as he was about to show it to his master, the mood diminished, because he could tell that his friend was not enjoying his birthday party like Felix had expected him to. The way his voice seemed to plead to get him out of that place, and the simple way that his friend had acted towards him. Felix knew that he had to do something. Whether or not it would be dragging him into his room or outside he knew that something had to be done.

Almost instantaneously he grabbed Devyni’s hand, whether he liked it or not, and grabbed his and Devyni’s coat with his other free hand. He quickly pulled Devyni up off of the ground of the dirty closet door and outside through the main doors. He didn’t care about the people watching Devyni and him running away from Devyni’s party when they were such important components to the party. All he cared about was getting away from that stuffy party and into the chilly, open aired, breeze. After running far enough away from the party he stopped to give Devyni’s coat to him, and to put on his own coat with a smile nonetheless. They were out of there, and free to do whatever they wanted to do for the time being.

Felix looked up at Devyni with shimmering eyes, partly from the cold and partly from the fact that they were out of there. He saw the same look of relief in Devyni’s eyes and he knew he had done the right thing. It was now just a matter of time and of deciding what to do. He glanced over at Devyni and smiled. Downtown there was a place with chocolate that he knew he would love. It had fudge and peppermint and a wide variety of other goodies. That’s where he decided that they would head.

“Come on, we’re going on an adventure” He scribbled this into his notepad and handed it over to Devyni. Today was going to be enjoyable, or so he hoped it would be. Being alone with his master, his friend. Something that never really happened that often, and being able to give him a gift for his birthday. It was something to celebrate and enjoy. He hoped it all was going to be something memorable for Devyni.

Devyni gave up the rest of the sentence in favor of grabbing a bright green jacket, not even stopping to make sure it was his in the four-foot journey from the closet to the front door. He hadn't expected Felix to take him at his word so quickly. Lucky that he had chosen a coat closet, and even luckier that he already had shoes on.

Someone's voice followed them out—Krysta's, probably, although he couldn't be sure through the general noise. For a split second he hesitated under the door frame, shivering as the breeze at his front . He was supposed to stay here. He should stay here. Running away was hardly the mature thing to do after they had put this together with him in mind; no doubt there were gifts to be opened and more things to eat and people who still wanted to talk to him—

God, more people who wanted to talk to him. Devyni slammed the door closed and let Felix drag him on, struggling to settle the jacket over his shoulders as they went. It didn't quite fit, a little big at the chest and a little tight at the waist and with a thinness to the shoulders that suggested it belonged to a female. Hopefully she wasn't planning on leaving anytime soon, because Devyni couldn't quite muster enough guilt to make himself change his mind. Here, the pressure evaporated and his breathing eased; he could even smile a little at the slow curling of his breath on the air and the way the wind snatched it.

Felix's note pulled Devyni's eyes back down, and his eyebrows up. "Are we, now," he said, a statement in his voice but a question in the slight crinkling around his eyes. An adventure, whatever it actually entailed, sounded alright. It was certainly better than going back inside.

Felix Valentine Trusdale-

Conversations, were never Felix’s strong point, and they still aren’t. It was a chilly afternoon, and so far no snow had started to fall, but the skies were overcast. The weathermen mentioned how snow was going to be on its way soon. Snow was something that Felix wanted so very desperately, to see the soft white flakes falling from the sky. Knowing that snow in its purest essence is the frozen tears of those people who are no longer alive. People like his mother. Snow was something that seemed so pure and yet, by the very definition of rain, was tainted even by the littlest bit. It was something that brought many couples together, and even broke some apart if one of them came to depart. What if...What if something like that happened to Devyni?

It was with that small thought that Felix glanced over at Devyni, and felt a pang of utterly intolerable sadness. To know that this person he had been with for so long could only be a mere ghost, or not even that but a mere figment of his imagination. He could feel his heart start to fall apart and crumble, but no, he knew that was all just one big lie. It wasn’t true, and he would be able to prove it. All it took was the mere glance at him, and something along the lines of physical touch to prove that Devyni was still in fact alive and breathing.

Breathing? Would he be blowing puffs of smoke out of his nose and mouth if he wasn’t breathing? A small smile crossed Felix’s lips, and he started to blow hot air into the cold air with his mouth. It was something he enjoyed to do as a child, and still likes to do to this day. He wished that he could form shapes and different little things from his mouth while blowing out into the air. It was something stupid and he knew that.

Felix also knew that Devyni would be getting cold soon, and that’s when he started speeding up his pace. He knew that there might be people walking around and some might recognize Devyni and Felix. They might start to wonder why he wasn’t at his party. It would slow down the idea that Felix had in mind. He wouldn’t be able to spend time with Devyni and he wouldn’t be able to give Devyni his birthday gift.

When he glanced back at Devyni and finally took his entire appearance in he realized that the light green jacket he had grabbed was Krysta’s. Felix knew that for a person of Devyni’s structure it would be weird to be wearing a girl’s jacket. Felix started unzipping his own and taking it off. Once he had removed his jacket the bitter cold finally hit full force, passing through his purple dress shirt. His teeth started chattering and he didn’t really care. If Devyni wanted both jackets then he would walk like this until they reached the cafe. As long as Devyni was happy, he was happy.

If anyone tried to tell Devyni, dispassionate chronicler of Panemite life and admittedly moody but hardly emotional, thank you very little, that he was capable of fluttering at someone, he would stare at them blankly until they felt uncomfortable enough to look away and change the subject; and if he did not quite have the sense of winning an argument, he would at least know he had made a point.

Felix pulled off his jacket and held it out. Devyni looked at it, glanced at the shivering avox, and fluttered.

His first instinct was to push Felix's hands away. When it became obvious that Felix wasn't going to budge, he drew back and flapped his hands uselessly once or twice while he tried to turn his sudden bought of coughing into coherent words. "Wait—you can't—hmm!" Moving sharply to cover his confusion, he tugged the darker fabric out of Felix's hands and switched it with his sister's windbreaker, contorting one shoulder awkwardly to keep from dropping both. The flash of cold air was brief but biting, and it was with shaking hands that he pulled the jacket around him and zipped it. "Thanks."

Pull yourself together, Devyni! Doing his best to look nonchalant (and failing miserably—hands shoved in pockets too quickly, head turned too conspicuously away, eyes too focused on his own steaming breaths), he took a steadying breath and opened his mouth. "We should get something warm. Bagel. Coffee. Whatever." He glanced over at Felix, eyebrows slightly raised—Any thoughts? The carefully constructed expression almost cracked into surprise as he noticed the mingling of their breath in the cold air; he stopped the urge to put space between them but he couldn't stop the momentary widening of his eyes. He coughed once more (an inexplicable reaction to nothing in particular, the freezing air must be upsetting his sinuses, he really did need something warm to drink), sending an extra translucent puff outward as he shrugged and looked away, then back (If you want to, I mean.).

((This is not where I wanted to end this, but I cannot drag another word out of him. 0_0))

After Devyni finally finished contemplating with himself and putting Felix’s coat on he murmured a quick thanks. Felix smiled slightly at that and tried to resist the urge of placing his hand in Devyni’s. He knew that something like that would be socially unacceptable for a person of Devyni’s stature and one of his own. He simply wanted to know he was there. It was such a long time since he had last felt a person’s touch. He wasn’t quite right in the head and he knew that others had been contemplating his trustworthiness. After all, he was an avox and they were considered the lowest of the low. Being condemned for something that they had done to get their tongues cut out. For Felix it was killing his mother in cold blooded murder. Something that others might be proud of, but something that he wasn't proud of in the least bit.

He looked at Devyni as he mentioned getting something warm, and a small frown appeared and then disappeared on his face as soon as it had appeared. His plans to go to that fancy cafe that Devyni loved had been diminished and he settled for the cheap cafe not too far from where they were at. It wasn't quite the ideal place and it was one of Felix's favorite cafes but still. The thought that Devyni wouldn't like it there. It was a small shop that most capitollites avoided and most avoxes went to. Then again knowing how Devyni would want to get out of the cold it was the closest place to warmth. If it would please Devyni, then it would please Felix.

Felix quickly changed direction, and started leading Devyni to the cafe and to warmth. While looking back to make sure Devyni was still behind him, he blanked out for a moment. When he came back, he realized that he was on the ground near a pile of broken bottles and glass. The chills that came from winter’s bitter embrace ran down his back, and he couldn’t shake it.The bitter cold seemed to be worse down near the ground. When everything came back into sorts. He recognized the figure of a medium sized capitollite heading towards Devyni. He knew right then what had happened, and he hoped that Devyni wasn’t going to do anything too brash.

Except he did. Felix could overhear Devyni yelling at the capitollite, and the capitollite turning around, and yelling right back at him. Almost instantly Felix started worrying about his owner, but instead of moving into action all he did was sit there on the ground and watch. It was almost like he couldn’t move, and he didn’t until after he knew what was coming. The capitollite raised his fist, and aimed it at Devyni. Felix, behind like he always was, stumbled off of the ground pushing his hands into the glass surrounding him and scurried over to Devyni. On the way over, he stumbled on something. The next thing he knew a sharp pain was in his ankle. and he was down on the ground once again with a soft yelp from his mouth. The next thing he heard was a noise coming from Devyni’s mouth

Essentially, he had failed Devyni. He had let Devyni get hurt, and on account of him nonetheless. It wasn’t worth it, and he knew it. Felix felt his heart sink and then jump right back up into his throat. He could only hope that his family would take an easy on him. Just the thought of being forced to leave Devyni was horrifying. And yet, he could’ve ran in front of Devyni and taken the hit like a good avox. He could’ve ran up behind the man and held onto his fist; preventing him from harming Devyni. Instead, all he did was sit there on the bitter cold ground, and when he did try moving he ended up spraining his ankle or tearing a muscle. He was pathetic, and he didn’t deserve Devyni as an owner.

Felix knew that Devyni would never leave his side no matter what happened. He would always be there to help him up, and to make sure he got back on his own two feet. There were times where he wished that Devyni would just leave him alone. He was unable to protect Devyni, and therefore he should be left on the streets to rot, and survive on his own. Devyni would never do anything like that though, and instead he would be right along side him. Treating him like an equal; like he was a dear friend. That was all Felix needed to smile. To know that someone had his back, and to know that someone cared for him. Someone who he could be with at all times.

Someone who was with him at that very moment. The person who held out his hand and who Felix looked at in the eyes. Those kind sweet eyes of his. The ones that never seemed to shout at him, or be rude to him at all. Those understanding words that he spoke. It was something that Felix admired about him. Felix was the lucky one to have him. Especially since, he was standing right next to Felix with a fat lip, and his hand extended toward Felix. Being the type of person Felix was, he declined Devyni’s offer for help. He got up on his own two feet, but when he took one step and nearly fell again he knew that he would need some help. Luckily, Devyni was right there in order to catch him. Felix’s face warmed and his soft smile grew on his face. He would’ve told him everything if he could. He honestly would.
