Frell Montgomery, District 5

Frell is very small for her age. She is shorter than the average twelve year old. Her hair is dark blond, and when it catches the sunshine, it shimmers red. She likes to keep her hair short, just long enough to tuck behind her ears. Her eyes are the same color blue as the sky.

Frell has always been a very weak girl, prone to illness. She believes this is because she got very sick during the same epidemic that killed her parents. She's never completely recovered from that. She can't run very far without having to stop and catch her breath, and she catches every illness that is going around.

Frell is very close to her sister, Chasslin. This is because her sister raised her. She believes she owes her sister for that, but she has no idea how to pay her back. Chass has always taken care of her and always protected her, and she knows she couldn't live without her.

Frell often missed school when she was young, because she got ill so often. When she did go to school, the other students teased her because she was so far behind them, and also because she was so small. But she always knew she could depend on her sister to come to her rescue. She did always feel bad when her sister got in trouble on her account, but she knew her sister only did it so she wouldn't get hurt.

Frell mostly likes to stay home. She doesn't mind work, but she it always tires her out so much, more than her sister or father. She prefers to be alone. It's not that she doesn't like people, she just doesn't like talking to them. She never knows what to say, and she's always afraid of sounding stupid. Plus, she's very shy. So, it's much better for her to just be alone.

When Frell was two, an epidemic swept across District Eleven. She got very sick, and both her parents died. She doesn't remember them. Her neighbor's wife has also died in the epidemic, so he decided to adopt her to fill in the empty spaces. Her neighbor's daughter Chasslin, who is only two years older than Frell, raised her.

All Frell knows about her real parents she has learned from the Old Lady that lives next door. They worked in the orchards before they died, and they met there, too. They were the perfect couple, and everyone was envious of them. Frell wishes that she could someday have a love like that, but she thinks she is too shy and awkward to ever attract the attention of a boy.

Her adopted father worked in the orchards when Frell was young. When he wasn't working, he was bargaining for food or fixing their house, which was always falling apart. She's never been very close to him, but she apprciates all he's done for her.

Frell's sister is always trying to protect her. She doesn't mind so much, but she thinks her sister tries too hard. She loves it when her sister lets down her guard and can be herself, instead of the cool, composed girl everyone sees. She likes to see her sister when she is vulnerable, because she feels closer to her. When Chass lets down her guard, the possibility for her to be hurt arises. And that lets Frell relate to her better then when she is "The Protector."
