Jay Lorence Falloway the Third
17 Years of age
Male
Residing in District Six
Appearance:
Standing at 5' 11", one could consider Jay to be tall. He's the tallest in his family, standing at least three inches taller than any of them. He has long legs, which make up most of his height. He usually wears expensive clothes and almost never leaves the house unless he's wearing a suit. On rare occasion, he'll dress down, but most of the time he'll be found wearing something expensive and vibrantly colored.
Jay has dark brown hair. it curls naturally, and most of the time he just leaves it this way. On occasion, he'll try to make it straighter, and he usually succeeds. His eyes are turquoise in color and almond shaped. His nose slightly large, though it isn't overly noticeable. Altogether, Jay is fairly well groomed. He washes his hair regularly and keeps his fingernails neat. He does, however, have crooked teeth, a flaw that annoys him to no end. If he could fix them, he would in a heartbeat.
Personality:
Jay has an almost feminine manner of walking, which may be the first thing to make people suspect that he's gay. His interest in fashion might be another thing. While he picks out most of his own clothes, his family will also order fabrics from District Eight on occasion, and he will make some clothes on his own.
While Jay is nice to people he likes, he often adopts a bitchy personality when dealing with those he doesn't care for. He's been known to dole out offensive comments and hurtful remarks. If there's someone he doesn't like, he doesn't fail to make it be known. He's rather good at ignoring people when he doesn't want to deal with them. It doesn't take much to make him angry or upset, and he knows how to hold a grudge. One could say that he has far more enemies than friends.
The few friends that Jay does have, he keeps close. He is fiercely loyal to them, and will support them no matter what. If one of his friends was in trouble, he would do anything to help them, even if it means endangering his own well-being. He hopes that they would do the same for him. His best friend is Dahlia Vea. They've known each other since they were young, and Jay would do absolutely anything for her. While he likes to think they tell each other everything, he knows that isn't true. He's kept it a secret from her that he's gay. And as far as he knows, Dahlia could be keeping secrets from him, too.
When Jay gets emotional, he tends to rant. He'll go on and on about something that doesn't really matter so he can hide his true feelings. He doesn't like people to know when he's hurting, because he's always felt that they don't really care. When he gets sad, he tries to pretend that he's fine, but he often ends up seeming distant. He isn't very good at talking about his feelings and tends to keep them bottled up inside.
History:
Jay was born the second child of one the wealthy families in District Six. Growing up, he had all his heart desired. His older sister, Desiree, always played with him when he was young. She was four years older than him, but she always made time for him. Their mother was always pressuring the two of them to be great. She expected them to have the best grades in school and to go to college. Their mother is not a very caring person. The Falloway children never had any reason to believe she loved them. As for their father, he was rarely seen. He was always working, and he never developed a relationship with his children.
When Jay was ten, Desiree started paying less attention to him. She became more interested in boys. Her time was spent preening herself and trying to look beautiful, not playing with her kid brother. Jay retreated from his family, believing that none of them cared about him anymore. His parents never showed that they loved him, only pressured him to be better, always better. And now Desiree was slipping away from him, too.
He was fifteen when he figured out he was gay. It wasn't a big thing, figuring it out. It isn't as if he kissed another boy and suddenly knew. He just realized it one day. He spent a little while hating himself for it. His mother was always pushing him to do great things, get a job that would make him rich, then settle down with a wife and make babies. And now he would never be able to do that. He had always felt that he wasn't good enough for his mother, and now he was afraid he never would be. He'd never give her the grandchildren she so desired, and he'd probably never live up to her expectations. He never told anyone he was gay. Not his parents, not his sister, not even his best friend.
It was the summer after he turned seventeen that everything changed. He was out with his sister on her day off from college. They were just walking around the District, talking but not really saying anything, poking their heads into some shops to look around. Now, Jay had always gotten a bad feeling when Peacekeepers were near, but there was something about the one walking their way that really disturbed him. He hoped they'd just be able to brush past him. They weren't doing anything wrong, so there was no reason for the peacekeeper to stop them. But he did.
The peacekeeper pulled them into an alley, far back where no one could see. He pulled a knife from his belt and held it at Desiree's throat. She was crying, begging him to let her go, asking what she'd done wrong. "I'm having a bad day," the peacekeeper grunted. "And that's reason enough for me." Jay should have done something, but he just stayed plastered against the wall, watching in horror as the peacekeeper slit open his sister's throat. But apparently killing her wasn't enough for the peacekeeper. He cracked open her ribs and carved out her heart.
There was so much blood. Jay didn't think he'd ever be able to erase the image from his head, or wash the smell from his nose. The peacekeeper looked up at him, his face and clothes bloody, and said, "If you tell anyone about this, I'll make sure you end up much worse off than her. Now run, before I change my mind and kill you now." So he did. When he got home, his parents asked him where Desiree was. He could barely speak, but he managed to tell them they'd gotten separated. After he calmed down some, he told them they'd been shopping and gotten separated, and that he'd looked for her everywhere. He felt bad about lying, but he had to. He believed the peacekeeper's threat, and he wanted to spare his parents the sorrow of losing both their children.
A search was organized to find Desiree. They never found her, or her body. Jay didn't know what the peacekeeper had done with it. He felt horrible about hiding the truth from his parents. He told himself it was so they wouldn't suffer so much, but deep down, he justified it by calling it revenge. Revenge for never caring about him like they should. He hoped things would change after Desiree's "disappearance." Maybe his mother would finally act like she loved him. But everything was the same. His mother pressured him more than ever. Jay tried his best to be what she wanted, but his grief made it harder than ever.
Since Desiree's death, Jay has developed Aichmophobia, a fear of sharp things. He can't go near a knife or a sewing needle without thinking about his sister's murder and re-living it. Even things that don't resemble a knife at all will sometimes send him back there, things like pencils or pointing fingers. This happens less often, but it happens all the same. He tries to avoid such objects at all costs. At night, he has trouble sleeping, haunted by his memories of that day. And when he does sleep, he is awakened by nightmares.
Jay tries to hide his emotions from others, but it's becoming increasingly harder. He fears that one day soon, it will all be too much, and all his secrets will come tumbling out.
