Darcy Howards, District 2

At first glance nothing is very striking about Darcy. At a second glace you might be more intrigued; she has dark green eyes which are reflected by tiny specks of grey. Her eyes are large and almost doll-like with an odd serenity which gives her an air of mystery; her dark eyelashes are thick and enhance her eyes. Her features are petite and her heart shaped face is framed by her ebony black hair which reaches six inches past her shoulders in soft waves. Darcy has a thin nose which is in proportion to the rest of her face and a scattering of light freckles across her nose which she hates, but are unavoidable as she spends allot of time outside, especially in the summer they become more pronounced. Her lips are a soft red colour and stands out against her skin which is fair in comparison to most people but she isn’t pale, nor does she burn easily in the sun.

Darcy is small, only just 5’4; her height can be a touchy subject as she hates being looked down upon in every sense. She is very slim with very slight curves; her figure makes climbing trees much easier and she can easily blend into a crowd as she doesn’t like to stand out too much. Her wrists are flawed with scars, old and new, but they don’t bother her in the least and she doesn’t try to hide them. Darcy is considered to be very pretty but not in a conventional way and even if she doesn’t like it, her appearance can attract attention when she isn’t trying to blend into the crowd. She usually wears tight-fitting jeans, some kind of under shirt along with an unbuttoned shirt. Her favourite foot wear is her old leather boots which are good for running/climbing and she avoids wearing dresses as much as possible. She likes to wear darker colours such as blues and greys which bring out her eyes and she isn’t girly at all.

Darcy isn’t very trusting and she is very independent so she doesn’t like to rely on other people. She hates attention and likes to just observe most of the time however, she can also be very curious; something which has gotten her into trouble under more than one circumstance. She is very stubborn; when she wants something she doesn’t stop until she gets it. That being said, she is in no way spoilt, just unyielding once something has caught her interest. Darcy is not particularly close to anyone but she’s not an outcast; she just prefers being alone most of the time as opposed to being in the company of people she is not very fond of.

Darcy hates being told what to do so naturally, if told something she usually does the exact opposite just to annoy the person. She’s smarter than she lets on and can be very witty and sarcastic when she wants to be. She doesn’t tend to get along with the other girls her age and makes no effort to either. In her opinion, if they don’t like her then she’s not going to change just to please a few people. She’s a free spirit and hates being in enclosed spaces which is why she loves spending time outside as opposed to indoors which can sometimes make her feel trapped and claustrophobic.

Although Darcy doesn’t bother hiding the scars on her wrists she can be defensive when asked about them as she likes to pretend nothing is wrong; she can’t stand pity so it would be almost counter-productive if someone she didn’t trust tried to help her. Darcy isn’t a very patient person and she always has to be doing something otherwise she’ll be restless and on edge. To calm her thoughts she usually wanders around the less populated areas of the district as it relaxes her and she doesn’t like being around too many people at one time.

Darcy’s home life isn’t fantastic but it wouldn’t be obvious at first glance. Her life portrays a typical, wealthy district 2 family with four older brothers: Fallon who is 18, he is the only one Darcy gets along with, Ace who is 21, Ares who is 23 and Hydran who is 26. Her brothers are overly-protective to the extreme and she hates them for it. Her brothers intimidate her and they’re not above threatening her if she makes them angry. When she was thirteen her brothers caught her with a boy she liked and when she refused to tell them who it was they locked her in an enclosed, suffocating space for hours on end before finally letting her out the next day. Ever since then she’s been terrified of enclosed spaces, one of the reasons why she spends most of her time outside.

Most nights Darcy is plagued by nightmares from when she was younger as her parents used verbal abuse against her because they never wanted a daughter. When she was fourteen her school found out about her cutting and tried to help which only made it worse and she refused anything being wrong. She has a very low self esteem but hides it, not letting anyone see her torment; the only person she trusts is herself and her self-harm is getting progressively worse. It scares her but she can’t control it once the panic takes over after waking up from another nightmare and lately she has seriously been considering volunteering to die in the Games.

Darcy’s mother works at the local hospital and has high expectations of Darcy to follow in her footsteps. They don’t get along and at best their relationship is strained politeness. Her father is the one Darcy is truly scared of even if she thinks it makes her weak to admit it. He works at the training Academy and is the source of her low self esteem with his verbal abuse. When Darcy was ten she first got the idea to start training and since then she’s progressed fast with knives. Her favourite weapon is throwing daggers and she hits her target almost every time. She trains when she’s angry and uses it as an outlet of emotions. Her most prized possession is her blade which she keeps in her left boot at all times, without it she feels defenceless.
