Appearance
Face:
Bestia's face is slender, framed by smooth, evenly-toned cheeks. But the brown eyes that she inherited from her mother show that she isn't as confident as she should be; if she could afford it, she would use make-up daily. As it turns out, her family can afford to buy her a single eye-liner pen each year for her birthday, which she uses sparingly before meeting up with other people at school or social gatherings. The thin black lines aren't much, but they are enough to make her feel ready to face the world with her rosy smile.
Hair:
Although her wavy, chocolate brown hair seems to suit her, she would rather have straight locks that were easy to control and style. But instead, she is stuck with stubbornly curly hair that won't hold in place without straighteners, which she can't afford. It's fairly long, not quite reaching the middle of her back; Bestia knows that she should probably tie it back when practicing her archery, because in the past arrows have caught in it and ripped out small chunks, but she imagines that she appears more impressive with her hair blowing in the wind as she takes aim.
Body:
Bestia makes up about half of her average height with her long, skinny legs, making her an ideal runner and lightweight fighter. Although she is generally slim, there is a lot of strength in her upper body due to the archery that she has trained in since she could pick up a bow, but not enough to throw a good punch. A good deal of girls would kill for a figure like hers, but it isn't out of choice. It's slim pickings for the Slane's, so the family has resorted to a vegetarian diet, meaning little fat and extra calories go onto her waistline. Her stamina is superior to her strength by far, and she can't decide if that would be an advantage or disadvantage if she ever went into the Hunger Games.
Clothing:
Being a teenage girl, Bestia cares about fashion, the latest looks, but especially tips and tricks to save money on it. Seeing as there are meagre leftovers from her father's wage each month, clothing is not a priority - according to her parents at least. But from odd jobs around the house here and there, she manages to scrape together enough money to get a new top or some leggings every few weeks, and keeps them going past their typical life-span with some well-practiced sewing skills and inventive thinking. Some of the items in her wardrobe are unique in the world because she has altered or decorated or repaired them so many times over! Although she likes to look like a beauty, Bestia has taken to pants in recent years due to them being practical in the field. The lighter and closer fitting, the better. To go with them she wears supple leather shoes; not flashy by any means, but nice enough to wear in public while also giving her a good tread when running. She makes sure that when clothing is concerned, she has it all planned out and is ready to go.
Personality
Positive Traits:
The years of training herself has made Bestia a very determined young woman, certain that she will train to become a Career on her own terms. She relies on her own initiative to find the time and a quiet corner to practice her archery, avoiding her father as long as possible. Although she argues like any teenager, she typically obeys her parents and does her bit of the housekeeping and helps to raise her younger brothers, who she is very patient with; but that doesn't mean that she likes them.
Negative Traits:
Bestia is a Career. Her name was chosen by her father to encourage her to be the best and to bring honor to the family, and so she has grown up with the mind-set that the Hunger Games is a sport and something to be a part of. She loves to watch it, talk about it and train for it. But a couple of traits hold her back: she isn't one for close-range fights, as she is built to out-run her opponents and attack from a distance with a bow, not to hack into someone with a sword. That would make her gag, which is the second problem; she doesn't go as far as fainting at the sight of blood, but it makes her feel sick beyond belief. Finally, she is jumpy; catch her by surprise and she will be off running without a second thought. And although she is patient, that can only go so far. Before now her younger brothers have irritated her to the point where she simply snaps, and her temper is wild; slamming doors and screaming at others are part of the rare event. Her father doesn't help when he orders her to calm down, or be quiet; his constant pressure through the years to become a Career his way has sewed a bitter seed in her heart - for both her parents. Her mother, Drilla, never intervenes, so Bestia has been left to fend for herself all these years. And she hates her for it. To top it all off she almost constantly feels inadequate as a person, which is why she attempts to keep up with the crowd with beauty and fashion; she fails to see that the only way she can be happy is to change her attitude, not to look more attractive. But for now she will carry on putting herself down, because she knows no other way.
Preferences:
It was early on in her life that Bestia decided that she wanted to train with a bow; she loved how light it was, and easy to carry while she was running. Most of all it keeps her out of harm's way and acts as a useful tool in some cases. And the kills tend to be clean, rather than gushing blood and dismembering victims like swords, meaning that she gets to keep her lunch, too. As for friends, she doesn't really have any close ones. A shame? No, an advantage. She meets up with a large group of girls from time to time, and their numbers mean that it hurts less if one of them doesn't return to the Arena. There's less dependency and expectations than there are in close relationships - and if there is a girl that she really can't stand, it is much easier to avoid her! When it comes to the boys of District Two, she is attracted to the strong, brave Careers - the opposite of herself. Bestia doesn't count money as being too important, but the richer the better as she wants a better life than what she currently has. Sadly, she doesn't see guys very often because she can't afford to train in the specialist gyms. Instead, she uses abandoned and crumbling homes to practice her archery; the shadows provide a challenge, as well as shooting cans off the roof and tops of walls. Most importantly, she thinks it proves to her dad that she doesn't need paid training, and that she is perfectly capable to become a powerful Career without his interference. And anyway - it's more fun.
Opinions:
Bestia is a typical District Two girl in the sense that she loves the Hunger Games. She sees the challenge of survival interesting, the intense fights awe-inspiring and the scenery beautiful. She isn't stupid, though; she knows how the Games work, how there is one winner only and how tough it is to come through alive. She would never volunteer, but if the odds chose her from the hundreds of slips in the glass ball then she would accept her role as a tribute willingly. She sees wealth as a gauge of success; the Capitol control everything, and so they are very rich. Victors are famous and own lavish homes, because they managed to survive the longest. If you want something, you will have to get it yourself. No one has ever helped Bestia with an important task before, so she sees no need to do the same for others.
History
Family:
Bestia is the oldest of three children in her family of miners by ten years, and is expected to take on a lot of the responsibilities to help out her mother. The twin brothers - Gritt and Shaft - exhaust their mother with their demands and fights, so since they were born she was told to grow up and get a job. She sees herself as an experiment to her parents, as they don't treat her brothers as harshly as they treated her (at least she doesn't remember them being so kind). Perhaps they think that they have failed and have made her an 'ungrateful', 'bratty' little madam. Her father talks about the poorer people of Panem as if they are dirt, but the Slane's get by with only a few coins of savings each month due to the man of the house being the only worker in the mine; you would think he owns a gym from the proud attitude he holds. Because of this, he and Bestia argue far too often, resulting in the foundations of their family cracking and a rift spreading between them.
Other Relationships:
By staying in a large group of girls Bestia feels protected and accepted, but there is no one that she trusts as much as herself. Over the years she has had the occasional boyfriend, but the desire to be with someone isn't very strong, possibly due to the obvious strain that is put on her mother; she does not wish to be like her one day.
Upbringing:
Throughout her childhood, Bestia was set to become a Career. At first it was encouragement, such as when she first started practicing with a bow. But when the twin boys came along when she was ten, the encouragement turned into pressure; Inite's wages at the mine were stretched to feed the family of five, and Drilla was too exhausted from the twins to get a job. So the duty fell on Bestia's shoulders - and she refused.
She was bullied into getting a job in a shop or cafe, but somehow managed to fight off the forceful responsibilities and stuck to her training. Her archery lessons were cut to save money, leaving her with no true release. It was the one thing she had a real passion for, and begged for it back, but even if her father was kind enough to have her start learning again they wouldn't have been able to afford it. Rebellion kicked in, and she began to fight everything her father decided, including the terms of her Career lifestyle. He wanted her to win so that the money could support their family. She chose to try and win to get away from the crumbling old house on the outskirts of town.
When she was fourteen, Bestia started to train in old abandoned homes; there was plenty of shadow, rubble and positions to practice her aim. Not long after she started, though, she fell from a height when a rotted roof collapsed beneath her. The result was a few broken bones and some nasty open wounds from the mix of rock and glass, followed by infection. It frightened her, and she still flees on sight of blood today. She knows that if she is ever chosen in the Reaping, she will have to toughen up considerably. But she is up for the challenge.
Everyday Life:
Bestia begins her day by getting ready for school when the sun rises (usually an hour earlier in winter, though) and prepares breakfast for herself, her brothers and her mother. If there is enough time she spends a few minutes honing her aim, then heads off to school. Once that is out of the way her day really begins; after spending an hour or so with the other girls, she works her way home via one of the many gyms, hoping to catch a young male Career as she passes by. She usually manages to sneak into the back yard to retrieve her bow and arrows, then goes off to practice in the old buildings of her district. On ideal days she will head out to a cafe as the sun is setting, buy a drink or a snack with any money she might be lucky enough to find in the gutter or in her pockets, and relax with some light revision of her school notes. She isn't too focused on her studies, but knows that if she doesn't get into the Games one day she will have to fall back onto a job, and plans to be more qualified than a merchant or miner. If she gets good enough grades then she could become a Peacekeeper and see a bit more of her tiny world. Finally, she returns home for good and sits through a noisy evening meal of rice or bread with root vegetables. She often argues with her father at this point, and is ordered to take care of the boys to cut off the heated debate. Once she is fully exhausted, she goes to bed - typically with a slam of her door - and reads a little on Hunger Games tactics, then falls asleep and starts the whole routine over once more.
