District/Area: District 4
Appearance:
Genestasia is a fragile, fourteen year old girl that lives in a world full of pale, dull colors. She has pale, blue-grey eyes, that stand out against her bloodless colored face. The rest of her body matches her face, with her green colored veins standing out on places like her forearms and neck. Her thin lips are a dusty pink color, and most of the time are cracked from the salty sea air. Sometimes they bleed, since she has a nasty habit of messing with them when she's not supposed to. Then her mother has to scold her and put ointment on them, which she hates to do. Genestasia has her mother’s sandy blonde hair, which hangs limply on her back. She prefers to keep it long, as she doesn’t like the way her face looks when its short. Unlike the rest of her family, Genestasia is all points and edges, with a thin pointy nose, a sharp jaw, and somewhat elfish like ears.Personality:
Genestasia is lacking in almost all departments. She has no chest, which she gets from her mother’s side of the family. She doesnt mind that too much, since it allows her to wear overalls and bathing suits just fine. She's as skinny as a rail, with chicken wings for arms, and doorknobs for knees. People always tell her she needs to "Get some meat on them bones", which she doesnt take lightly. She could eat a whole feast and still be shrimpy little Genestasia. She has long, delicate fingers, which are good for painting. The bottoms of her feet seem to be painted cinnabar, since she always likes to walk around barefooted. That, and when she's out on a boat she usually sleeps with her feet propped up, exposed to the harsh sunlight. She would help, but she's too weak to even hold a fishing pole for long, let alone catch a fish and haul it in.
The only thing Genestasia seems to be good at is housework. Her mother has her stay inside all day while father goes out on the Boat. The Queen Mab, her family's pride and joy. Note: Her family's, not hers. Genestasia despises the boat, as it only brings her bad memories. These memories have also left Genestasia wary of the ocean, which everyone in her little community finds odd and a bit hilarious. Why would a fisher’s daughter hate the ocean? It almost seems like the start of a bad joke, except she's the punchline, which is not funny. Most of them wouldn’t think its funny if they knew the reasons why she didn’t like the ocean.
Genestasia can swim, tie some knots, and can attempt to grab fish out of the water, when she permits herself to get into the water that is. That's about it, and because of her failure when it comes to fishing and her community's livelihood, her parents hope and pray that some man will take her when she's of marrying age; because it’s become painfully obvious that she won’t be able to make a living for herself. Genestasia doesn’t care though, she has plans of her own that don’t involve District 4 or fishing for that matter.
Genestasia prefers to wear short, cupcake style dresses, or overalls. Her parents don't approve of her fashion sense, as it ranges from "I'm a cake topper" to "I'm a hillbilly that just rolled out of a ditch". Attractive, right? She used to only wear overalls when going to school, but people started having the wrong idea about her, whispering about how she was really a boy, and how her parents had adopted her out of pity. She didn't even want to know how that rumor started, so she started wearing dresses and bows so that she looked more like a girly girl. The rumors stopped, but Genestasia fell in love with dresses, so she continues to wear them.
Being called shrimpy is as far away from a compliment you can get when talking to a girl, but to add insult to injury, its actually true. Genestasia is a mere 5 feet, 3 inches. Petite. This could be cute, if she didn't look like a boy that hasn't hit puberty yet. People sometimes don't believe her when she tells them she's seventeen, and not twelve. Guys laugh at her, and girls don't even give her the time of day. She ignores them though, and sticks close to her true friends. They don't care that she's small and skinny, or how she cant fish and is a reject in a lot of peoples eyes. They see Genestasia as "a city girl, a ballerina, who got mixed up with a beach bum family, and needs to find her way home". Her friends say this to her whenever she's feeling down, and when she's at home, done with chores and alone with herself, she imagines herself sitting in a luxurious apartment, in the Capitol, where she feels she belongs.
Genestasia is a very quiet girl, as she doesn't have a lot of interaction with other people. Of course she talks to her family, briefly, since her connection with them has been strained. Ever since Rendus died, there seemed to be a void in her family. It's as if the day he was buried, most of their joy and happiness went to reside with him. Now, there is awkward small talk, but mostly a silence that sits in their house. The first year was the hardest, for everyone. She was bitter, her parents depressed, her sister taking her anger out by rebelling against them all. The twins seemed to cope the best, as they had each other, but even their normal, carefree ways seemed to be dimmed. What little time Genestasia had spent on the beach, most of it with Rendus picking up shells or swimming, was all but terminated. She began staying in the house more, learning house work, and began taking art class. Her parents were too busy with their own feelings to think about their daughters new hobby, and it soon became habit for the older children to go out with Dad, and for her to stay home.History:
Genestasia tries to stay upbeat though, or at least fakes it when other people are around. She doesn't want to drag her family's name down more than she already has. When around other kids they usually overlook her. She isn't like them, with their fishing skills or career like qualities. She isn't loud, outgoing, arrogant. Not like most of the kids are, who long ago started training for the Hunger Games, waiting for their time to shine. It never seemed like part of her world, the Hunger Games. She was never fit or athletic, and since she was the youngest, career training never seemed an option for her. That in itself set her far apart from her power hungry peers. But still, with her gentle, subdued ways, she managed to make a few friends at school, and has stuck with them ever since.
Genestasia isn't all doom and depression though. When around her friends, she has a bit of a whimsical side. She loves to laugh, play games, tell jokes, act like herself. She used to always act whimsical when Rendus was around. The two of them would walk along the beach shore, him in swim trunks, her in a t-shirt and overalls. They would stay out from dawn until dusk, collecting shells for Mom, catching fish and putting them in a bucket for Dad. They would have races, play charades, swim in the water, have piggy back rides. At school kids had accepted her more, she was more fun and outgoing. She remembers being tanner too, and her and her brothers feet would sometimes be cardinal red from walking on the hot sand all day. Her mother would gladly put ointment on her feet then. But now, she keeps her playful side for only her friends. She seems to almost have three settings. When around family, she is subdued and artistic, wasting her time painting or writing in solitude, like a woe be gone poet. When around her friends, she's a barrel of fun, playing and teasing, laughing and just acting like a kid. A carefree girl with no worries or troubles in the world. When she's around adults or other people in the town, she acts like everything is normal, like she's just a happy girl from a happy family, who had a terrible accident that left them stronger and closer knit then before. Nothing could have been farther from the truth.
Genestasia Winnow Jones was born on April 3rd, her parents Titan and Theta prouder then ever to have a beautiful baby girl. Genestasia, a mix between Genevieve and Anastasia, looked more like her mother then her father. Her mother was in her early thirties then, and looked like a natural beauty. Dark brown eyes and blonde hair made her look like a true beach beauty, and she had caught the eye of Titan Jones when they were in school together. Titan was the definition of tall, dark, and handsome. Standing at six feet tall, with a rather muscular build from swimming and catching fish all day, he was a complete girl magnet. But he only ever had his blue eyes set on Theta.Codeword: oDair
The two married, and inherited a beach front house from Theta's grandmother. The house, a baby blue color with white shutters and a cozy wrap around porch, was perfect for the newlyweds. They had their first child, a giant baby boy they named Rendus Titus. Rendus had his mothers blonde hair and brown eyes, and everyone adored him. Three years later came twins, Jelphinius and Freche, both boys. They didn't seem to have their fathers bigness, but instead got his black hair and their mothers dark brown eyes. Two years after that, the Jones first girl arrived. Ibinine Gold, who had all her fathers looks, blue eyes and black hair. Five years later, a surprise showed up, with the name Genestasia Winnow. Genestasia was a bit of an accident, which only added to later rumors of her being adopted, as no one knew that Theta was pregnant. Genestasia seemed to be a mini Rendus, with the same hair and eye color as him. The two were inseparable.
When Genestasia was five, she learned how to swim. Since their house was right on the beach, Rendus would take her out to practice her swimming every morning. Ibinine, now ten years old, was jealous of all the attention her sister got. She would also go to Genestasia's swim "lessons" and try to show off for Rendus. One time she faked she was drowning, and Rendus had to rush in to save her. When he did drag her out of the water she cried "Woo-Hoo! Rendus came to save me, Rendus came to save me!" She chanted this as Rendus brought her back to the shore. He then knelt down beside her and glared, his blue eyes piercing into hers.
"Did you do that on purpose?" His voice was quiet, and Ibinine stopped her chant. She looked down at the ground, suddenly upset that Rendus wasn’t as happy as her. Without another word, Rendus brought her back to the house. On her way back, Ibinine made a point of glaring at Genestasia. This is your fault. Genestasia got her message loud and clear. When Genestasia was seven, her parents started letting her go off to pick shells on the beach shore. Titan had tried to teach her how to fish, but even when she was young she was scrawny for her age. Her parents assumed that, when she was a teenager, she would grow into herself a bit more. The twins, now fourteen, went out with their father on the Queen Mab. They adapted to fishing quickly, and were already strong from their Career Training. Ibinine, who was going through the awkward phase of becoming a lady, refused to hang out with Genestasia.
Genestasia walked into the house one day, after having caught some minnows and a starfish for her dad, and found her mother and sister having a discussion on the couch.
"She is your only sister," her mother was saying, smoothing her hair down. Ibinine looked like she'd been crying, and she hugged a pillow to her chest, her fingers clenching and unclenching as she spoke.
"I don’t care! She's stupid and she hogs Rendus all to herself! Why did you have to have her anyways! Why couldn’t you have had another boy-" Ibinine cut off when she saw Genestasia standing in the doorway. Ibinine then, with a dramatic wail, threw the pillow down and ran out of the room, her hands covering her face. Her mother abruptly stood up and started walking towards her. "Sweetie don’t listen…". A door slammed, and her mother glanced at the stairs.
Genestasia, who couldn’t have cared less about what her sister was whining about, showed her mother her starfish. Her mother told her it was nice, but that she should go put it back into the ocean. When she returned, her mother was nowhere to be seen.
When Genestasia was eight, Rendus moved out. Genestasia bawled when he broke the news to her. "Why do you have to leave me?" Genestasia was beyond hurt, and felt a little betrayed. Rendus, her best friend, was leaving her here, with Evil Ibby. The twins were all right, but they were gone all day, either at school or on the boat. Rendus had apparently gotten an offer to work as a deckhand on some fancy boat, and had accepted right away.
"Don’t worry Winn, I'll always write to you. And whenever I have time off, I'll come right home, Okay?" Genestasia had sadly agreed, and the night before he left she curled up next to him, and he read her her favorite book. When she woke up he had gone, slipped away so that there wouldn’t have to be a tearful goodbye. Over the next three years he would write to her, and occasionally stop by for a week or so, but then be back out on the ocean. Genestasia hated to admit it, but Rendus loved his job. He talked about all the types of fish he got, taught her how to tie some knots, and would sometimes bring her gifts or sweets. In his letters he would always ask how she was doing, and write funny jokes or little pictures that would make her laugh.
Genestasia in return would write her brother long stories, or would paint him pictures of her friends or what she had been doing lately. Then one day, December 14th, they got an official looking letter. Genestasia thought it looked official because there was a fancy stamp on the front. Genestasia wondered why Rendus would have drawn that for her, when her mother asked her to hand over the letter. There seemed to be curiosity in her mother’s eyes, along with a hint of something else. Genestasia wouldn’t find out until later, that it was dread. The letter, which was from Captain Wellwood of the Arctic Seal, read:
Dear Jones family, it is with the deepest regret that the Arctic Seal's crew and I must inform you that your son, Mister Rendus Titus Jones, Deckhand on the Arctic Seal, died on Tuesday, December 5th. Deckhand Jones was fixing one of the Arctic Seal's sails, which had come undone during a ghastly storm, when, due to the most unfortunate events, he fell overboard. The storm made it almost impossible to spot Deckhand Jones, and he was not recovered until the next day. His funeral will be financed by the Arctic Seal crew, with your permission. We are terribly sorry for your loss. Mister Jones was a fine man, full of integrity, courage, and honor.
There was more in the letter, but Genestasia couldn’t bear to read it. She knew he shouldn’t have left. Why hadn’t he listened to her? Why did it have to be him! Genestasia soon began blaming her parents, saying to herself that it was their faults Rendus was gone because they let him leave. She began hating her little community, and then all of District 4. She hated the ocean; she hated the sight of her father’s boat. She couldn’t stand to see any of her family. Everyone cried the day of Rendus's funeral. It was a very nice funeral, with flowers and doves. Most of Rendus's friends and shipmates showed up. On the day of his funeral, Genestasia wore overalls over a black t-shirt. Rendus would have understood why. Her mother had been horror struck when she saw her daughter walk out in that, but Genestasia merely said "I wear this, or I don’t go." Some of the towns people that had come took notice of what she was wearing, but she didn’t care. She was there for Rendus, not them.
That year was very hard for her family. The twins slipped in and out of the house, always staying together and barley saying a word to anyone. Ibinine, then 16, considered herself an adult, and often went out partying with boys. She was sometimes brought home by other adults, who would tell tales of Ibinine vandalizing their property, being too loud, or worse. Her parents tried to reel Ibinine in, but she wouldn’t listen, rebelling against them in any way she could think of. Genestasia, trying to find an outlet, continued to write and draw, as it reminded her of Rendus. She drew paintings of seashells, trees, the sky, birds. She would never draw the ocean, and she never drew boats.
Day by day Genestasia would spend more and more time alone, and less with her family. The idea that her parents were the cause of Rendus's death slowly became reality to Genestasia, and she soon developed her icy personality towards them. Eventually the twins moved out, moving to a beach a little south of where they lived. Ibinine moved out the first chance she could, moving to a different little town with some friend of hers. And now, its just Genestasia. She probably would have gone mad from staying by herself all day, as her father is out fishing, and her mother just leaves the house during the day. Luckily, she has a few friends, her painting, and her writing. She's still dreaming though, dreaming of the day when she moves out of District 4 and into the Capitol. She just has to figure out how.
Comments/Other:
I'm sorry its long, I was trying to make her as real as possible. If it sounds like I'm rambling, I'm also sorry. I tried to give examples to describe her home life.
Like, she's detached from her parents. She has a very strong bond with Rednus and was devastated when he died. I might take the twins out, they didn't really impact her life... I'm not sure.
Ibinine (pronounced Bib without the B, in, nine) was meant to be like the black sheep of the family.
As for Genestasia (Gene like Genevieve, an stasia like the end of Anastasia) I'm thinking she looks more like a pale boho girl (if that helps you put more of an image in your head of what she looks like).
Also, I'm 15 and wrote this in like two-ish hours, so that's why it isn't super good. Hopefully RPGing will improve my writing skills
Lastly, I've never RPGed before, or written anything for that matter. I usually sit and day dream, and I finally decided to start writing my random dreams down. Thank you for taking the time to read mine
Have a nice day!
