Blades, ranged, blunt, hand to hand, I'm still a little bit fuzzy on if there is a distinction.

For example, I know that hand to hand is the weakest form of combat, but I don't quite understand how the others are superior to it.

For other weapons, it's a balance of damage and accuracy. Some (e.g. axe) are less accurate (more misses and blocks) but more powerful (more deep gashes / stabs / severs than shallow cuts), others (e.g. knife) are more accurate (fewer misses / blocks) but less powerful (more shallow cuts)
