Alone at last, no one but me, Honey Locust myself, decides to take a break. The peacekeepers are gonna go crazy if they find out, but they hardly ever do. There are so many of us out here, chopping wood as best we can. They won't notice if I'm gone for thirty minutes, maybe an hour. I slam my axe into a tree. It doesn't matter that it hurts the tree, it's gonna be chopped down soon, just like pretty much all of the wood in District 7. I wonder what will happen when we run out of trees. Rebellion? No, destruction. As soon as The Capitol finds out they don't need us anymore, they kill us.

I know they have tried to brainwash us from the first day of school, but the majority of us know better. "Bloody Capitolites," I mumble, starting to get a little bit pissed. I start walking, trying to stop myself from getting unnecessarily angry. That's the main reason why I run away from work. I don't always run away, but sometimes there is just too much to consume. The other kids my age just don't understand why I run away. Now, they don't really think as much as I do, do they? After a couple of minutes walking, I find my favorite 'thinking tree'. It's comfortable to sit in, and it's the type of tree I was named from - it's a Honey Locust tree.

I find myself wandering again. It's almost like I switch off and next thing I know, I'm tracing a path through this familiar patch of the forest not too far from home. It wouldn't be fair to suggest that I wander mindlessly, but to say that I wander aimlessly certainly is true. I am always thinking, and it is a lot easier to think in the woods. There is something in the way the air moved out there that soothes me, comforts me, makes any troubles seem a little more distant. Not that I have many... troubles, that is. Beyond the obvious.

School's out and, rather than head straight home, I go for a walk. Everything feels more secure out here, which seems rather a contradiction in terms for the lack of shelter or people. Perhaps that's why it feels safer. It's hard not to be suspicious around people; that's probably just me though. The smell of earth fills my nostrils as I inhale deeply, taking the time to sift through my clouded thoughts. There was something I needed to do and I can't remember it for the life of me. That's irritating.

It must be horrid to live in some of the other districts. Where do you go when you want a little time to yourself in somewhere like District 12? I've seen pictures of the place and, while I endeavour not to judge, it looks pretty grim. I am very lucky to be where I am, living the life I live. Things can be rough but they could be so much worse. How ungrateful is it of me to even want to separate myself from everyone else for a walk in the woods? What makes me so special?

I hear a voice a few metres to my left and turn to spy a girl, seemingly around my age, storming through the trees. I don't often see anyone out here; not for any real reason beyond the fact that many workers don't venture past the tree-line as they process the woods for the sake of convenience. She's cute, as far as I can tell from a distance, and doesn't seem to be in too good a mood. Something, I'm not sure what, takes control and I start towards her, despite some hesitation. Before I know it, she's up a tree, a thorny locust. "You'll get pricked if you're not careful..." My voice seems to fade out, growing more aware, as I speak, that the last thing someone in a bad mood wants is a lecture.[/size]

I sigh lightly as I climb my way up in the tree. Footsteps are getting closer, but I ignore it, thinking that it can't be anything abnormal about it. Just as I sit down on the usual spot, I hear a voice, slowly fading out. I jump, not expecting someone else to be by my tree, even though I did hear the footsteps. I have never seen anyone else around here before, and I certainly don't like new things unexpectedly falling on top of me.

I feel a sharp, stinging pain near by my elbow, knowing I just got pricked by the spikes sticking out all over the tree. I whine, but shut up pretty soon. I don't want to start a fight, and to scream is probably the worst way to prevent it. "Yeah, I just noticed that," I say, my voice trembling like the legs of a newborn deer. This is my place, isn't it? This is my place to calm down and be alone. I have never experienced being seen here before, and if this boy - seemingly not very much older than I - tells the peacekeepers that I'm off work, I'm dead.

"Who are you, and how did you find me?" I ask, now with a slight point steadier voice. I have seen his face before, but never tried - or cared - to know his name. Through all these years of not knowing him, I have always admired his hair. I can't really explain it, I just have a passion for blond hair. I want it, but then I don't want to seem like another Capitolite, those who always dye their hair in crazy, stupid colors. I don't want to seem like the ones I just criticized.

The light breeze of the afternoon brushes my fringe from my eyes as it dances delicately across my face, filling my nose with the scent of the forest greenery. The sheer range of different trees that they grow in these woods is impressive and, over the years, I've come to know the properties of the different kinds of wood though there's always more to learn.

No sooner have I said it before I realise it is quite possibly my fault, for distracting her, that she got stuck by one of the thorns. Whoops. Her questions surprise me - such an accusatory feel to them. I figure I've no reason to menace her with lies or mistr

"Oh, uh, I'm sorry. I didn't realise... Hefin. Hefin Pryce. I didn't - find you mean, or I didn't mean to. I just did. I was just going for a walk, on my way home, and I heard you talking is all."

I shifted my weight from one foot to the other anxiously. There is something in the way she is eyeing me that makes me feel a little uncomfortable. It is the sense of having walked in on something private and disturbed someone's personal space. It isn't a nice feeling and a part of me wants to flee the situation but her face isn't unknown to me. It would only be a matter of time before, if she chose to, she raises the encounter again. Better, surely, to get any awkward conversations over and done with so we can move on from them. You know what they say; onwards and upwards, so to speak.

I nod slowly, trying to avoid looking at Hefin. I embrace the branch I'm sitting on with my legs to prevent myself from falling down. I suppose I have heard him walk by before. That might as well be the reason why I didn't react to the sound of his feet as he came closer. I haven't noticed him, being all into my thoughts. He hasn't noticed me, not bothering to look up. It all makes sense now. "Oh, uhm. I'm Honey Locust. Nice to meet you, I think. Sorry for scaring you. I'm just not... used to seeing other people here. You won't tell the peacekeepers, right?" I say, just to be one hundred percent sure.

I turn around to see the thorn I was just stung by. If there's a chance of getting stung by that thing again, I really don't want it there, I think furiously, again trying to calm myself down and avoid letting it out on others. I break the thorn, turn it in my hand a couple of times before throwing it down. I have done that a lot. Breaking thorns. If I didn't, it would be just really uncomfortable to sit here. I look at Hefin nervously, deciding whether or not to trust him. That's just me. My way to make friends. And just look how many friends I've got. None.

"Well, I... no, don't leave!" Did that seem too... desperate? Yep. Definitely. I need a friend. I won't just turn away when I've got the chance to get one. "I left work. But don't tell anyone I'm here, they'll arrest me."

Seems like the two of us have missed meeting a number of times previously. Funny how things like that work out, isn't it? I look her up and down, imagining how uncomfortable that tree must be. Then again, if she's up there at all regularly, she must have pulled out a lot of the thorns to give herself a good base to sit on. Still, I don't think I'll join her up there any time soon; not least because I reckon she'd push me straight back down if I tried.

I raise my eyebrows inquisitively. Honey Locust... like the tree. Perhaps that's why she's out here, trying to develop an affinity for her namesake. Thankfully, she seems less prickly than the tree for which she was named. "Like the tree. That's a nice name." Her voice sounds concerned. She has nothing to fear from me. I do not want to go pissing off anyone who has enough spunk about them to ignore the rules. They tend to be a little less... predictable. "And no, I won't tell anyone..." I nod in as understanding seeming a manner as I can muster. I probably look more like I have a twitch. Damn.

I stop. Well, at least she's being honest with me and that explains why I don't already know her name. If she's working more instead of schooling, we'd not have encountered each other beyond in passing in the street. That she's being open with me is enough to show she's going to trust me not to turn her in and it'd be rude not to trust in kind, wouldn't it? I hate social diplomacy; I never know what etiquette for meeting new people is. Even if I didn't trust her, which I guess I do, I'd be loathed to turn her in. I've seen how they treat the folks they catch themselves and it's not pretty. I'm not sure I could handle responsibility for any of that, whether the person I snitched on was in the wrong or not.

"I-it's okay. Your secret's safe with me, heh." All of a sudden, I feel like some kind of criminal. I swallow hard to rid myself of this sudden sense of guilt and look back up at Honey, offering her as close to a warm smile as I can manage. I must definitely[/b] look like I have a twitch. Damn it. I sigh in relief and slide down the branch a few inches, causing me to look like some sort of retarded backwards- and upside down snail in a crib or something. Right now I don't care how weird I look, I just feel calm, knowing he won't get me arrested, even though what I am doing is against the law. I'd very much like to keep my tongue. "Thanks, Hefin."

I guess he, too, knows what happens to people who break the law, to people who run away. Everyone knows. The schools and the teachers might have taught them, but as I am one of those who work instead of going to school, I wouldn't know about that. My dad is a teacher, so it doesn't affect me. If there is anything I need to know, I'll just ask him. But he'll die sooner or later. Even though I don't have to worry about that right now, there will be a time when I have to learn stuff myself. I'm a fast learner, so it doesn't trouble me... too much.

I sit up straighter and eye the boy from head to toe. He kind of looks like he's in some sort of pain. I didn't mean to to that. I mean, if I did that. I don't know why he looks like he does, I just hope I didn't do anything wrong. I have a habit of making people feel uncomfortable. It's a pain. It's the main reason why I don't have friends. That, and that I usually just stand there and feel awkward every time a stranger or really just anyone would talk to me.

"Are you.. okay?" I ask concerned, starting to slowly move down from the tree.

I quickly get tired of listening in on these two's awkward ass conversation and decide it would be rude of me to continue to listen without them knowing. Damn, I really needed to stop eavesdropping so much. But the opportunity always seemed to come right on along...

"He's just twitchy is all." I shout from my tall tree down at the girl. They both seem about my age. That explains the awkwardness...

"I know the type." I tell them coolly, still not turning my gaze to them, keeping my eyes shut and my hands comfortably behind my head.
