I’d rather live with broken bones
than lay here all on my own
like a lovesick fool

The past month had been quite…. sporadic. Some mornings you woke up with a new sort of reverence for the dawning day while other mornings you were bitter and angry. You didn’t need to ask Tiberius to know that he hated those days; you often snapped at him, telling him to leave you alone as you shakily sought out any kind of pill to swallow. But Tiberius was as steady as a rock – he never let you stoop down so low to the stage he found you in, he never allowed you to be pessimistic for any longer than a minute, and he never let you anywhere near sharp objects. It’s like he actually cares for me.
Ever since Tiberius said you couldn’t leave, you really hadn’t. The only time you ever stepped foot out of his house was to go to the market and he always accompanied you. You were never alone, not when he could help it. Does that mean anything?
Over the month, you and Tiberius had grown fairly close. Hell, he knows my darkest secret and he forced me to stay in his home instead of chasing me off. But as the days went on, despite the anger-filled withdrawal symptoms, he was able to see the real you: the artistic you, the culinarian you, the you that dedicated his life to making your siblings’ lives easier and keep some food on the table. After a little over a week you were genuinely smiling at him, and soon after you began opening up once again with all the good aspects of yourself.
You stir the mix of colorful peppers, onions, herbs, cheese, and sausage, sprinkling the concoction onto the flat egg omelet in the pan. As you do so you write down your steps and amounts on a little piece of paper – a habit you picked up as you began to explore in the culinary world. And if I like what I make then I’ll remember how to make it. You’re particularly excited to try this omelet, simply because bell peppers are one of your favorite vegetables to work with. That was another thing that Tiberius helped you with: you had quickly gained weight due to all the stress you put on yourself, and he – his friendship, his friendliness, his positive outlook on your own life – inspired you a great deal to get back into shape, starting with healthier food choices. Granted, every now and then you did treat the both of you to some cake you were longing to try, but as you promised him you would go and do something to work it off. Not only did the exercise start to cut down on your extra weight, it helped ward off the negative, depressing thoughts too. Overall you became much more mellow, ate more regularly, and slowly returned to the Hopper you knew before everything went downhill.
Taking the spatula, you carefully fold over the omelet and use a fork to help scoop it up, setting it gently down on a plate. You slide the pan to the cool side of the stove, turn it off, and sprinkle some crushed basil over the two rolled omelets. A smile crosses your face. One for him, one for me. You scoop some scrambled eggs onto each plate and sprinkle pepper on top – a personal touch you always liked with your eggs. Picking up the plates you set one down on Tiberius’s usual side of the table and then seat yourself down on the opposite side, taking a fork and starting to cut the omelet while waiting for him to show up.
