Josseline Labelle | Seventy | Female | OdairJosseline simply gazed straight ahead while the surrounding makeup artists, no, connoisseurs were preparing her stage presence. Fitted in a flowing red dress, the elderly woman truly possessed some form of majesty. Whether that majesty came from the twinkle of wisdom in her eye, the tact in her soft, yet slightly raspy voice, or just the look she was pulling off today was effectively unknown, but one thing was certain: it was there.
As one of the lucky few reporters that got to interview her, I watched in admiration as she just sat there, perfectly still, doll-like even, as a stylist duo came in with what effectively looked to be a trolley of haircare products. Josseline simply laughed at them, and in a voice as sweet as a raspberry sorbet, told her that she didn't want any outlandish colors or stylings, she just wanted her hair to look soft and a bit cloud-like, but for the sheer to remain just enough to elaborate upon the contrast of her dress and body.
It was the most elegant thing I've ever heard.
When she was done being recreated by the women and men surrounding her, I felt obligated to clap. And so did the other reporters by the look of it. Josseline was stunning, radiant even. Refined, elegant, and poise, just as ever. The only thing different about her now, and when she first started modeling, besides the aging and the amount of professionalism of course, was the look in her eye. That saucy, doe-eyed girl had been replaced by a confident, strong woman. And I knew that her fans would eat it up.
Commanding, almost like a queen, Josseline stood and clapped her hands.
"Now then, I know that most of you must be dying to get to the stage and do this, but if I may remind you one thing: Don't hesitate to ask me any question you feel necessary; I have no secrets,"
I picked up just the slightest tremble in her hands and the smallest smirk on her face as she reached for the door that would lead us to the main stage, where we would be asking her questions in front of a live audience. As she pulled back the door, applause echoed throughout the stadium as she walked, no, prowled, down to what appeared to be a contemporary, yet regal couch.
Clasping her hands, she began to speak again. I didn't know if it was because she was being watched by so many people or what, but her Capitol accent, still very elegant mind you, but very thick, came out.
"Well then, don't be afraid; ask away,"
Immediately, this one, rather short and husky woman begins practically interrogating her, no allowing any of us a word in edgewise. A glance between the rest of us signify that whenever there was a chance, we'd interrupt the lady. She was asking pointless stuff in my opinion. Things like her favorite color, what she liked to do other than modelling, blah blah blah. And Josseline answered each of her questions in that very sweet voice of hers, offering the occasional giggle which spiked up laughter from the audience. All in all, everyone seemed to be having a good time, especially Josseline. I don't know why I get the feeling that she's too genuine; it's almost as if she's got something to hide, but I can't pinpoint what exactly.
It was almost as if she were two completely different people: Miss Panem on one end and then this slightly more sinister, manipulative, cold-hearted snake on the other.
I saw my chance. That lady finally picked up her glass of water and I jumped on it. The chance, that is.
"As an avid fan of yours, I've got to say that my favorite shots of you were when you first started out. The look in your eyes then were completely different than they are now. Do you agree, and if so, would you elaborate?"
She looked at me with such warmth in her eyes, to the point that it was a bit eerie.
"Ask anyone. In today's world, it's incredibly hard to get into the modelling business. It was only a tad bit easier when I was a young girl. Remember, I was alive during the Dark Days, even if only briefly, so I can relate the stress I felt then to what I felt as a teenage girl trying to book these jobs," She took a sip of water before continuing. "Just to get my foot in the door took a lot of work. And then to keep my foot there? I can't begin to describe you the social networking I had to do to keep my career. You'll notice that that's when the look in my eye began to change. That's when my agent told me, 'Jo, you're pretty, and you're a good model, but you just seem so innocent and are so quiet; you're going to get trampled if you keep it up'. I thought she was full of it, of course, but there was wisdom in her words as I quickly learned." She let out a soft chuckle; the answer she gave was legitimate, as much as I'd like to think it's not.
Before I could gather my thoughts to ask another reporter a question, he basically asked for her early life story. Her response to him wasn't much different than her response to mine. She experienced the first five years of her life during the Dark Days, which I can only imagine how stressful it was for her. She talked about how she grew throughout the years, learning new modelling techniques and how she had to constantly change her look. She talked about her semi-humorous experiences with light body modifications, like dying her skin certain colors and the occasional wig or weave. Of course, Josseline was only giving superficial details. There was something in her eye that said she wasn't middle aged, something that said that her dreams were more important to her than her old memories.
I saw my chance again and asked her when she thought she had made it to "supermodel" standards. She looked at me, with a glint of youth still present in her eye.
"I honestly don't think I'm there yet. I don't think anyone could be classified as a "supermodel". Sure, there are some of us," she gestured to herself, earning a laugh from the audience, "That have been in the game longer, but we'll always be picking up new tricks. I'm still learning, constantly, and all models will be learning for the rest of their lives, whether that be something as simple as the latest trend or how to perfect their walk,"
The questioning continued for what seemed like ever. Her thoughts on the Hunger Games, her favorite tribute, her latest endeavors with men, or rather, with significantly younger men, and her views on children. She was tasteful with all the questioning, even going as far to joke that she doesn't have kids, nor does she want them because she might mistake them for her alleged young lovers when her sight goes.
But one thing was certain: Josseline was a classy lady, and that whatever she was hiding would most definitely remain that way.[/blockquote]
