Appearance:

Tall and thin, Karin looks like she could blow away in the breeze. She's pale in every sense of the word, from her blonde hair to her light blue-gray eyes. Due to her pale complexion, she blushes quite brilliantly, all the way to the roots of her hair. To say it's noticeable is an understatement. As for any womanly attributes, she's fairly flat and has little in the way of curves. She'd probably look downright boyish, but she keeps her hair long and likes feminine clothing.

Karin has a strong jaw, and has a stubborn way of setting her mouth. It's the only part of her that has any hope of looking tough, because she simply isn't. Her eyes are kind, and she has pretty bow-shaped lips. She has a bit of a habit of licking them, though, and so they're often chapped. Usually she looks soft and sweet, which isn't too far from the truth.

Personality:

Normally soft-spoken, Karin is a very motherly sort. She feels she's responsible for everyone around her, even if they're older than she is. Especially her brother. He might be two years older, but Karin is convinced it's her job to protect him. Any friends that she has also fall under her protection, although she isn't exactly in any position to be protecting anyone. She's far from being a career, having never trained for it despite her district.

She likes to be organized and tries to act older than she really is, but inside she's still just a kid. She does have a very strong sense of duty, though, and would give her life for those she has in her care. Of course, it's likely to be her fault anyone's life is in danger because she can sometimes be a bit reckless or not think things through. She's eternally optimistic, always thinking things will work out for the best even if there's no evidence that that is true.

For all that she thinks she knows the world, she really doesn't. She's innocent and naive, and influenced by others' opinions of her. She feels that everyone has to like her, and gets rather upset when people don't. However she can be a bit annoying, what with her naivety, optimism, and motherly nature. Especially when she thinks she knows best when she really doesn't.

History:

Karin was born two years after her older brother, Mathew. Her father much preferred Mathew, after all, he was the male child. Karin was weaker as the female, and so she never received any sort of training. Her brother was to be trained as a career, but Karin was left defenseless. Her father expected her to take care of the house rather than ever learn to fend for herself. This was okay with her, though, because she was much more nurturing and the thought of hurting anyone was unbearable. Even at a young age she was feeding and caring for any stray animals around the house. Her father hated it, saying she was wasting their resources, but her mother stood up for her and let her take care of some of them as her own pets.

When she was seven, her mother died of pneumonia. It came as a surprise because the sickness had come on quickly and with no warning. It got worse and worse until she finally just passed away. Karin was crushed. Her mother was the one she had always looked up to, the one she wanted to be just like. Innocent as she was, Karin didn't really understand death. For years afterwards, she would watch for her mother to come home to her. She just couldn't believe she was gone forever. It seemed like such a final, permanent thing, and it was.

She became closer to her brother after that. He was stronger than her, and training, but when he had free time they were usually together. She knew he thought he was protecting her all the time, but she thought that in the end she'd be the one to watch out for him. Not being the closest with her father, the only thing that Karin really has left is her brother and the stray animals. Every once in a while she'll take a child under her wing, but she has an issue with keeping any good friends and so seems to end up alone a lot. It's never really occurred to her to try to leave the district, but she'd do anything for her brother.
