What it all was about

We got going early in the morning, leaving our rooms at almost the same time as we went to breakfast. I barely chewed my food, wanting to spend as much time training as I could because we only had three days and I wanted to make the most of them. I wanted to be prepared for the Games so the slim chance that I might live, that one in twenty-four chance, might grow a little bit larger. I looked up at Yaa a couple times while we ate, trying to catch her eye so we might share a glance. As my District partner she would be one of the first people I would have a chance to ally with. I needed to have at least one person to watch my back in there, it would be dangerous to go in alone with so many people up against me. I felt like if I was just able to share a glance with her I might have a shot at getting her on my side. Still, I wasn't about to only work one way, as her ally we would work together to keep each other safe. If we even became allies. I finished my last piece of an overly buttered roll and pushed my plate to the side, leaning on the table as I looked at Yaa. "So, when you're ready we should get down there." Let's go see who our competition is.

Before the sun rose that morning, Yaa tiptoed through the halls of the District Seven training center floor and knocked on her stylist's door. She tried to remember the woman's name as she waited, reasoning that it was probably rude to knock on someone's door at five in the morning and then not know their name. Was it Noelle? Novel? Something with a V...

But really, her stylist was there to take care of her. The lady could deal with a little bluntness.

As the door swung open, Yaa blurted out her request.

"Cut off my hair," she began, staring the woman straight in the face without a smile or any sign of a pleasant greeting. "I don't want anyone grabbing me by my hair and killing me."

And there she was, hours later, leaning over a warm Capitol breakfast in their private dining room. The stylist hadn't cut off everything, because she said she needed something to work with for the interview. Yaa didn't care, so long as there was less to hold on to.

Out of the corner of her eye she could see Deimos looking over at her with a somewhat creepy intensity, though she highly doubted it was because of the new hair. She wasn't stupid, not even close, and she knew that her District partner probably wanted to ally with her so she could save his butt in the arena.

He spoke just as she shoved a heaping spoonful of scrambled eggs into her mouth, something like "So, when you're ready we should get down there," except it might have been something different considering that she honestly couldn't pay attention with how freakishly delicious the eggs tasted.

Wiping her hand on a towel, she looked over at him with a slight roll of the eyes. "I'm eating," she said, mouth so full of food she could hardly speak. She held up a finger as if to say "wait," and she ate for another minute, spooning so many eggs into her mouth that she felt close to puking.

Puke all over your enemies, that'll show 'em..

She laughed at the thought, but of course her goal was different. It would be smarter to overeat now and nourish herself as much as possible before being sent into that murder trap.

When she was done, she quickly pushed herself back from the table, gesturing for Deimos to follow. "Let's go," she called, not looking back. "You seem like you want an alliance, and I think we might be late."

She didn't seem to see to be paying attention to me, and I watched as she seemed entranced by the scrambled eggs that were scooped in a string of endless spoonfuls to her mouth. "I'm eating" she said, though I could barely make out her words from the mumbles she made around the eggs she was still shoveling into her face. While I hardly ate anything she was busy eating everything I didn't touch. I grimaced to myself as I realized that she was probably trying to build herself up for the Games while I more or less starved myself because of my worries. My nerves always caused me to eat little, and I wished that wasn't the case but it was and I had to live with it.

Yaa held up one finger, not the middle one at least, to tell me to wait. I had figured as much - what with the way she was still eating - but I decided to force one more roll into me while I waited, barely managing to swallow because my throat felt so dry. The sound of Yaa laughing made my gaze rise from the last bite of my roll, which I was so tempted to not eat because each swallow was painful right now, to her face to see - with a touch of disappointment - that she was laughing at her own thoughts and not at me. It was like I may as well have been an avox rather than her District partner. Then again, maybe she was putting distance between the two of us so it wouldn't bother her so much when she cut me down. Would she do that?

A moment later, while I tried to swallow the last of my roll and my self-pitying thoughts, Yaa pushed herself back from the table and gestured to me to get up and follow her. I was on my feet as the lump of roll managed to squeeze down my throat, hearing her say, "Let's go," before I realized she was almost out the door. For having been ready to leave before her, I felt like I was being left behind in her dust. She didn't look back as she walked, just called behind to me. "You seem like you want an alliance, and I think we might be late." Make a face, I did my best to catch up with her though it wasn't easy. It took me until we got to the elevator to actually stand beside her.

I had wanted to make a comment about the fact that I had been ready sooner than she had, but I had the feeling it wouldn't help my cause, instead I tried a different approach. "An alliance would be a good thing to have, and we are District partners." Too obvious? Probably. She was probably going to laugh at me, treat me like some lost puppy that was following her around until she could find the owner. I had to show her somehow that I was more than that. Even so, I didn't think I was off to a good start.

By the time I had woken up, my fellow district partner was already gone. I didn’t know how to feel. Should I have been offended? Offended that someone, my own district, seems to already want t abandon me, or should I feel comforted by the thought of her leaving early not giving me the chance to get to know her, to become attached to her? I decided the later, I didn’t want to get to know her anyway, just in case she died. If she died, and I knew her… well, I might not take it very well.

Shoveling food into my mouth I take the moment to admire the place that I would have to live in for the next few days. No matter how much I hated the capitol, and the people who lived here, I had to admire the way they did things. This building for example. I loved the way the windows were the walls for looking outside, outside over the busy city which lingered below. I had never seen anything like it before, and every time I took the moment to look out the window I would feel my heart jump in my chest. We were up so high. At home, you never, ever, got the chance to be up this high. I loved it. I loved the way I looked down upon the city, as though I had the power. I was so big, the city so small, so vulnerable under my gaze. I know it was silly, silly to even believe for a moment that I had power, because of course I didn’t I had no power. I was just a puppet. A puppet being pulled along by the game makers. But that didn’t stop me from dreaming, imagining that I had the power, that everything below belong to me.

Taking one more mouthful of cereal, I place the bowl on the table, the crystal table, before grabbing a bread roll and dashing from the room. I was heading to the training area, were I will practice things that will help me survive in the arena. I wasn’t sure what I was going to practice, but I knew for sure that I wanted to stay away from the blades, especially after my sister. I try to avoid them as much as possible. Reaching the elevator I press the down button, almost instantly the doors slide open with a small ping. I step in, the door sliding closed before me. The elevator was just as interesting at the room. Buttons covered one of the walls and I pressed the one that would take me down. It only takes a moment before the elevator come to a halt, and the doors slide open.

I step out, my eyes taking into the room that no surrounds me. I freeze. Oh god. This is going to be fun. I think dully, my lips pulling down at the corners.

What’s-her-face and Lethe are already gone when I wake up. I feel rather bad that I can’t remember my own district partner’s name but in the long run I know I’d feel much better not remembering. Her face, though, that I’ll never forget, but a face with no name is much easier to attack.

I drag myself down the stairs, groggy from another sleepless night. At this rate I’ll die in the arena from oversleeping. A light groan escapes me and I rub my eyes. Things could be worse, I guess; I could not have slept at all instead of just the few winks I got, but I suppose you feel better with absolutely no sleep as opposed to just a few hours. Lucky me, then. Perhaps it’s a result of my anxiety, I don’t know, but whatever it is needs to just leave me alone so I can have a few moments of peace before all hell breaks loose.

I sit by myself at breakfast unwilling to socialize, especially to the careers. Those people really aren’t all they’re chalked up to be. The only thing that makes them any “better” than me is just that they break the rules and train their entire lives for this damned game; other than that they’re not worth any more than the dirt on my shoe. I scoff in their direction, forcing down a few bites that won’t upset my stomach before following the few people that are headed toward the training area.

There aren’t many people here: a couple, probably district partners, and then one guy with wild hair. The three of them look amiable enough though I don’t guess they know each other, aside from the supposed district partners. Somewhat absentmindedly I edge my way closer to the three of them, hoping to maybe catch their interest instead of me having to strike up the conversation.
