Horror unfolded on the screen before her. It was the Hunger Games finale and Tessa couldn't peel her eyes from the horrendous acts being committed on the giant screen in front of her. A small jar of fig preserves and spoon was all the small child had on hand and it was being nervously downed at a somewhat slow pace. Somewhat terrified of the Reaping, Tessa couldn't help but watch the finalists slowly kill one another in what would be - no, what was - the end of the Sixty-Third Hunger Games. After all, once these Games were over, there would only be a small break and then the Reaping process would start all over again. What if she were next? What if someone she knew was next?

Her thoughts immediately went over to Sampson; he was one of the Izar boys and was Tessa's age, therefore being in her class at school. His brother was one of the District Eleven tributes who died in the games. Tessa was actually home to watch the events unfold; as Benat Izar was bludgeoned and left for dead by his former two alliance member before he said his goodbyes to his family beside the lake. After he finished, he died.

Belle's death hadn't been as climatic - Tessa hadn't gotten to witness it, but there wasn't nearly as much talk (that she heard about) about her as there was about Benat. She had died in the "second bloodbath" with her fellow alliance member, Faye.

But now, the twins from District Six were killing one another. Or rather, one twin was killing the other. As the girl from District Two felled Pyrian, Tessa's heart sank. Despite hating the Hunger Games in general, the doe-eyed blonde couldn't help but root for River, the auburn haired girl from District Four who tried to keep one twin from killing the other.

Tessa continued to watch, eyes glued to the screen. One of her hands brought up the spoon to her mouth; she sucked on the slimy, yet rough texture of the sour-sweet preserves in hopes of eating it all too soon. The women on the screen were now in a three-way deadlock and the jungle was blazing around them - she could only hope that River prevailed, partially due to the fact that she had a hand in avenging Benat's death.

While Tessa would prefer to imagine that she was a fan of River from the start, she wasn't. River's attack on Axel had led to the boy's death, or rather, she led the initial onslaught on the boy. Still, River more than made up for it with her goodbye to Emerald and ability to keep progressing through the competition. Pyrian's death was still fresh on Tessa's mind and River's attempted defense of the boy finished turning over the leaf so to speak. River actually had a good chance of winning this. She was the least damaged as far as Tessa could tell and Gypsy was near death. The smart thing to do, at least in her opinion, was to either land a big hit on Gypsy and finish her or wait on Cricket and see what she did. But if River waited, there was a chance she would be attacked by the both of them. And that wouldn't be good at all.

So, Tessa sat there, slowly bringing knees up to her chin. The girl took juuuuust a moment to look around as if she could find other "loyal fans". One boy in particular who appeared to be in his late teens appeared to be watching alongside her. Well, not really alongside, per say, but he was close enough for her to talk to! He was rather lanky in appearance and despite him being pale, his disheveled black hair and stubble made him look somewhat approachable. So, the preteen went for it - anything to distract her from her new favorite contestant being hurt.

"Hey there," Her voice chimed softly, like that of a wind chime. "Who do you think will win?

Has it already come to the end? I’m not sure how much I’ve missed since the day he died.[/color] It’s been harder to do a lot of things since the feeling set in, a bit like a pair of weights slung down along my ankles, or on top of my chest at night. Makes me feel like I’m always falling behind. I don’t say his name—tried not to—since the day he died. The others in the District paid their respects, some of ‘em, but I know the time will come when his body comes home. When we have to stand on that stage for whoever it is that finishes, and smile and say what a good person they are. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it, but I know they don’t take kindly if you don’t play along.

It’s not enough for them to say that they cared—that Benat was one of the best tributes we’ve had in some time, since Denver finished tenth a few games ago—it doesn’t make me feel any better. Nothing anyone else would say could bring him back.[/color] It’s supposed to make me—supposed to be better to cheer for a victor, to be connected to the other districts. After all, we were failures, having sent a girl and boy to their deaths. One early—she never got so much as a chance in these games—the other a bumbling oaf that hadn’t killed more than a fly. We’re forced to watch the end now, so that all of us can recognize the girl—the boy, Pyrian, now dead—that will be crowned in a few short days.

It doesn’t matter the square is stuffed full of people that whispers as I pass. I’d never known what fame was, other than the victors on screen. We weren’t anything to this district—a big family of farmers, with loads of cousins and Izars everywhere—but nothing to be talked about. And here and now the eyes fell upon me—me, a nobody[/color] —because of what my brother had done. Were they proud? Were they scornful? Should I have cared more… should I have tried to defend Benat in his death? I didn’t know enough about nothing to figure it out. I just missed him so bad it made my heart hurt and my nose leak.

Worse than anything was that his killers were gone. The two girls that had taken Benat from me had died—Ivy just the day after, the first to fall in the feast, and Elodie at the hands of an ugly mutt. There was nothing left to mourn. How could I hate the dead?[/color] I’d thought seeing them die would make me feel better. Seeing Ivy’s head cracked in made me weep, but there was no cure for this sadness. And Elodie wasn’t much of a girl by the time she’d been fallen. Could he have made it, had things been different?[/color] I catch myself again, falling, falling, falling—deep into the rabbit hole of what ifs and could have beens.

“Does it matter?” I grunt out, looking at the girl questioning who would win. Immediately I regret this, and hang my head down. It’s not her fault we have no one left to cheer for that’s our own. I pull my knees to my chest and chew my lip. They both ought to be dead, anyway.[/color][/blockquote][/size][/justify]
