Joel glances back at me and smiles, and I return the gesture. I'm glad I met these two people, even if I don't remember how. I wouldn't be surprised if I've known them for more than a day, and I've just forgotten. That seems to happen a lot when I meet knew people. If I don't see Joel and Gabe for a week, I probably won't remember them. I know that's kind of upsetting to some people, but I can't control my memory like they do. Things just slip away and I don't even notice, and then I can't seem to get a hold of them once they're gone."Is something-um, you...you okay?" The words come fast, tumbling out of my mouth and twisting my tongue so they don't make sense. Well, maybe they do, but it definitely doesn't sound normal.
Suddenly, Joel stops in his tracks, and stares wide-eyed at something I can't see. I try to follow his gaze, but it's too hard with all the people walking around. He bends his head and quickens his pace, and I follow suit, hurrying my footsteps. When he looks back up a moment later, his features seem to relax, and I can hear him sighing with relief.
I don't think Joel heard me, because we've come to a patch of brown grass and he's taking a seat. Maybe he didn't hear me. "I think we should eat. Before the bread gets too cold." He says. I nod and sit down next to him, legs crossed, elbows on my knees, chin resting in my hands. My eyes are fixed on the bread, which still has small wisps of steaming curling around it. It smells so tasty, I'm having trouble not tearing a piece off for myself. But I try to control myself, and stay content by just watching the food.
"I have a question."
I look up to see that it was Joel talking, or maybe his name is Gabe...the name has slipped from my mind. I bite my lip, trying to remember, but it's hard. They both look so similar, I can't figure out who's who.
"What is it?"
That was the other boy, Gabe or Joel, I don't know. Somehow I've managed to forget in a matter of seconds. Since my thoughts are so confusing at the moment, I don't bother saying anything, and entertain myself by listening to the conversation.
I walk
I talk
I think
Others talk
