Results A wide-scope analysis was done upon entrance into library at 14:48. Four tables were occupied by three females and five males (Table 1: two males, one female; Table 2: two males; Table 3: two females; Table 4: one male; see Figure 1 for visual representation). Of the eight patrons, only five are frequent. The librarian was not present at the desk, but she was later found behind one of the stacks of books, mumbling to herself. At table 1, both males were speaking in raised voices (~50dB) about material (x > 10.0, x representing times word was mentioned). Table 2 was silent (< 20dB) with the pages being flipped on average 10 pages per minute. At table 3, the noise level was maintained at 30dB and the books did not move from their position. At table 4, the noise level was low, but a rustling sound other than that of pages was heard. Upon further examination by walking close to table 4, it was observed that the male was eating seeds that appeared very much like the seed from Papaver somniferum. The analysis was further conducted with a specific interest in the male at table 4. He was pale with dark hair. His back was facing the front of the library and the point of observation. He was then examined from the front and while there were few notable details (x < 3), marks were observed on his arms. He also showed signs of slight depression (not in the clinical sense). Hyperactivity was not observed. |
Discussion I decided to ignore the first three tables due to their irrelevancy to the pursuit of my investigation. Instead, most of the attention was placed on table 4. The rate at which the male was eating the seed indicated a habit, perhaps not even a conscious one. His pale skin must have been due to his lack of contact with the sunlight or an inability to tan. The third option was he was sick, but if he was sick, what would the purpose of being in the library do for his health? There was no reason why I would be interested in finding out more about this male, except his constant eating of the poppy seeds. I therefore proposed direct interaction with the male. For this direct interaction, I had to move to a position where I could see his face and have an appropriate conversation as I have previously been told that it is not conducive to talk to someone’s back. Before I started a conversation, though, I took the time to further examine the physical features and noticed some more physical attributes that supported my initial conclusion that he had made a habit of eating poppy seeds. There was also evidence that suggested that oral consumption was not the only way he ingested parts of Papaver somniferum. However, a conclusion could not be formed because I did not observe the actual injection. Other possible injectable drugs include methamphetamine, benzoylmethylecgonine (cocaine), and amphetamine. These are improbable, though, as hyperactivity was not observed. This interaction could only be productive if I continued with verbal conversation. “I hope you understand that while not as potent, the seeds will still contribute to your illness.” I had included the word “hope” but meant nothing of it. I rarely meant any wishful thinking I might have said. Also, I described his habit as an illness due to its physical effects to his system, most importantly his mental system. “You may want to consume them at a slower rate so that your tolerance will not increase as rapidly.” |
