He journeys down hallways that he's not quite sure he belongs in. The sweltering beats pounding in the background are loud enough to lose oneself in, and he does gently. Swaying back and forth, deliberately moving with the flow he finds pushing through the air. There is a trail that is present in the silver glowing of the air, and he follows it with a fingertip on his free hand, the other caressing a once shiny champagne flute. What used to be spotless transparency is now filled with inexperienced fingertips and the remnants of the couple other drinks that have been in it - a shot of whiskey, a lit bit of vodka mixed with a cranberry juice. All of these drinks came at the insistence of various guests from the party around him, but Peri really truly didn't know the difference between them all. Only that they all tasted wonderful on his tongue.
The whiskey had stung a bit on the way down, causing his body to shake frivolously, slightly spastic, but ultimately the rich liquid had been satisfying and served it's purpose. Being his first time ever actually drinking, Peri felt as if he was getting a solid taste at what the general concept was - grab what ever you wanted and see what you could do with it. Despite being cranberry, the vodka mixed drink tasted almost like strawberry, maybe blueberry. Definitely berry, that he was sure of and he made that opinion known to the couple of people he walked into. Berry? No, he wasn't actually that sure. "It definitely tastes like red." He said to himself, a couple of people turn to see who he might be talking to, was it them? Peri wasn't too sure actually, it was a red though, definitely red.
At the beginning of the night, the bartender almost seemed to scoff at him as he cautiously poured his first glass of champagne. Almost as if he had served more than a few victors in his time. Well, why not! There was seven, eight, or nine, or ten of them there tonight - maybe more. Gosh, Peri couldn't really name them if he wanted to. Did the tiger count as a victor. 'Man,' he thought to himself. 'How fucking cool would it be to have a tiger as a victor?' Why hadn't he gotten a tiger when he won? Cricket just seemed like a total blast, like she could just host a party whenever. A circus party, she was a part of the circus. That would be fun. Breathe fire like she did in the Games! There was nothing cool like that in his Games, just lots of death.
From the building he couldn't really see anything outside, he wondered what the stars would be doing that night. Did Wes or Kiera or Aria ever have alcohol before? Man, wherever they were Peri hoped they would try it. It was just so good. So good.
Despite being pretty unwilling to actually come to Arbor's party at the beginning of the night it had turned out to be a total blast. The speech part was boring, so was the dinner. There was no open roof, so Peri couldn't see outside - which sucked. Also, awkwardly talking to the other victors hadn't been so great - he wasn't really connected with them as a whole. Topaz was always generously nice. Arbor was great, Peri had hardly talked to him, but he had been so nice. So so nice. Cheers to Arbor and how nice he was. Throughout the evening, he had made sure to let more than a few strangers know just how he felt about how nice Arbor was. "So nice."
Though he didn't have much experience with alcohol, Peri figured as long as he could count the number of drinks he had on his hands, that would make it completely fine. Champagne, one. Whiskey, two. Red, three. So, really he was completely fine. Stumbling over to the bar, he hailed over the bartender dramatically. He'd always been a klutz, and having this small amount of booze in his system seemed to make the whole thing come back to life dramatically no matter how hard he tried to walk tall and in a straight line. The world just clearly hated him. "Do you have anything that tastes like, purple? Yeah, something that's like - that texture you know?" With a roll of his eyes the bartender went off to find a drink, perfect. Absolutely perfect. This was great.
Music pumped and Peri swayed on his stool, how marvellous all of this was, there was a dance floor and people were dressed so dramatically and just so colourful. Nothing like him, very plain. Next time there was a Capitol party, he would make sure to dress properly. To his left he spotted Arbor talking to a few guests, Arbor was so nice. So great. Peri waved dramatically and smiled happily, it was so nice to see another victor, any victor. There were so many victors here tonight. Just so many. "Arbor, Arbor, Arbor!" Letting the last letter of each of the cat calls drawl out of his mouth in a drunken slur, Peri leaned forward on the bar out of breath. Woah, that got excited pretty quickly. Everything was just so great.
Why hadn't he tried alcohol sooner?
