The day had started out gray and wet, and as it went on it wasn’t really improving. There was mud in the streets now, and a light coat of water on everything; it wasn’t really raining but the air was giving off a mist that seemed to chill you to the bone as well as drench your hair. This was the kind of weather Elizabeth was stepping out into as she left the back entrance of the mayor’s home; where she worked in the afternoons after school. Pushing some hair that had escaped her braid away from her face and behind her ear, Elizabeth closed the door and turned toward the market, her basket that held a simple book in the crook of her arm. Normally Elizabeth would just head home, but today she needed to pick up some thread and needles, not to mention a few other items.
Elizabeth walked carefully threw the streets, wishing that she could have done this earlier and been home by now. Already the sun was starting to set and her brothers and father would shortly be home. Elizabeth thought about just heading home right now, her father tended to worry about her if she was out after sun set, but they had waited already too long for these items and if she waited any longer they might be able to buy them. So with her shoulders squared and her head high, Elizabeth walked down the street towards the little shops.
Each person she passed made some eye contact and gave her a slight smile, which Elizabeth gave back in return. The people were always friendly toward each other, well for the most part, but lately there was sadness the filled the town; that usually came after the games were over. Two children from their town were dead, their bodies arriving soon, and in a few weeks the victor would also arrive to receive gifts and such from the town. This was a time of morning and of grief; so smiles were limited and would be for a few weeks.
It took Elizabeth only a few minutes and she was there in the town square where the shops were. Stopping for a moment she looked into her basket for the list that she had made of items that they needed. It was a poor time to stop, for just seconds later someone bumped into her causing her to drop her basket and the things in it. “Oh no.” She cried as she bent down to pick up her book and some papers.
