Dandy Gordon

The Reaping is Dandy Gordon's busiest day of the year. She wakes up early and visits families, offers kind words and a smile. She helps braid hair and fix ties. She does as much as she can for the children of District Twelve before being shuffled off into her age group in front of the stage. Naturally her siblings' names are on her mind, but also all the neighborhood children she's babysat and watched over. It's Daisy's first Reaping, she must be shaking like a leaf. Jordan only has one more year and then he'll be in the mines and away from the Reaping bowl. Ash and Magnolia still have a ways to go before they're safe. Dozens of names flew around inside her head, clogging her mind and making her heart beat faster than any drum. Sierra Birdbrook. She doesn't know the girl, and while part of her relaxes knowing that none of her friends will be sent to the Arena her heart still aches for Sierra. However, soon that dull pain is covered up by a punch in the stomach- Erik Strauss.
At first the name means nothing to her, her brain a blank white piece of paper but as the boy comes forward memories blend out onto the canvas, filling her with dread, fear and sorrow. Dandy can hardly sit through the rest of the ceremony with the boy's face up there on the stage. This was what he wanted she tries to tell herself but she just can't shake the horror.
As soon as they're released, the girl makes a beeline for the Justice Building dodging revealed parents and children alike. She wants to walk right in but a Peacekeepers makes me wait far too long before granting permission to see the boy.
The Justice Building is a dusty old place. No one ever uses it, and the tribute send off rooms are occupied only once a year. The room is covered in heavy fabrics and smells of mildew. Then there's Erik. The skinny boy she had run into by chance one night and had never quite forgotten about. Suddenly, Dandy feels a bit silly for running all the way to say goodbye to someone she barely knows- but she does know one thing about him, that this was what he wanted.
Without saying a word, she steps closer trying to give him the smile she used all morning to comfort frightened children, yet she couldn't summon it anymore. Her teeth were gnawing at her bottom lip trying to keep her own fears at bay.
"Congratulations" she said, refusing to actually look at the boy she raced all the way here to see. "I guess you'll be remembered now."
