The days had turned warmer, and Oceana had been driven harder than normal in practice. She had realized that as a Career her life had been rough, maybe too rough...she no longer felt the pain of the blows she had taken when she first started practices at a young age. And she no longer was able to see the world with her eyes closed, it wasn't the happy place so many others thought it would be.
As she moved towards the city, her body idly moving as she thought, she spotted children playing in a yard nearby. The normal reaction she supposed would be to feel joy, compassion, tenderness...and she couldn't explain why she felt nothing. Oceana knew that they would be better, have more choices than her. That to their parents they weren't a nothing...though she did have to give her mother some credit for trying to connect to her that morning. The cute little handmade lunch had been a nice touch though she suspected ut had more to do with her father's happiness than anything else. Oceana had placed top of her class in a recent career exam dealing with survival tactics. She had even seemed to attract the notice of a couple bigger and more popular career members. In all reality though, she could care less. She would make what alliances she had too if she ever made it into the arena.
She watched the children for a moment more then kept walking, passing people by she headed towards a small pond she knew of, the trees closing in around it made it peaceful. She reaches one massive tree and stood for a moment, smoothing out her simple black academy uniform, and staring blankly into the water. She wondered how many people would go on in the world living with an illusion that they created. And then she felt her mind hit for a moment on a single thought...what if those that were dead had been truly lucky to find peace.
She stared into the tranquil waters so hard it seemed as if she willed it to give up some secret. And maybe it did have one, she couldn't be sure. And for a moment she was lost to time, lost to the recesses of her own thoughts where no other was free to wander.
