Phobias of practically everything; People, dark, nature, sleeping, night, etc. These were all caused by her abusive parents who abandoned her at a young age.

Run run run. They were coming. I could hear their loud footsteps drumming on the hospital floor. I was winded and sprinting unsteadily down the hallway, praying the floor wouldn't cave in. It felt hollow underneath me feet, echoing the sounds of my panic. "Evangeline..." Their voices hissed behind me. I tried to ignore them and kept running. "EVANGELINE!" They chanted louder, with more force. I let out a small squeak of terror. I closed my hands around my airs, trying to mute their sounds. They were closing in. Closer, closer, closer. "EVANGELINE!" The screeches filled the corridor. It was all so surreal, all of them screaming into my head. Covering my ears did nothing to help. I collided with the floor, the impact knocking the wind out of me. Run run run.

I felt the floor cave in and the whole seen evaporated from existence. I opened my eyes as quickly as I could, wanting to escape the nightmare. I was laying down on the cold floor, it felt so sturdy. I rolled on my back, my chest raising and lowering rapidly. Cold sweat covered my face and I let out small whimper. I had to tell myself repeatedly that they weren't here. That they left me so long ago, they probably forgot about me. That it was all just a dream. I wish they didn't fill my mind every night, however. I wish I didn't have to wake up on the floor every night. I wish I could actually sleep in peace, not disrupted by any horrid scenes. I wish someone was there to comfort me. But the only thing I can tell myself is that they're only wishes.

I crawl back under the covers in my bed, trembling and shaking. The room was still dark. I could tell dawn was still far off. I could also tell that I wasn't falling back to sleep tonight. I curl myself into a ball and try to breath steadily. Will the monsters come from the dark and get me tonight? Oh how I want the light to flick on, revealing any hairy creatures under my bed. I know they're not there, but I can seem to feel a mysterious presence that can't be explained. Just the aftermath of the nightmare. I'm envious of the slow, rhythmic breathing of the other kids in the room. The silence is quite eerie after the snoring is muted out from my ears. It scared me so much. Scared me because I thought they were all dead, and quite peaceful. Maybe they're in a happy dimension, away from this world and in another. Maybe I'm alone. I've always have been. But it's more defeating when you're lonely and other people are around you.

I start to sob quietly. No one can hear me, I'm sure. I don't want them to either. The hot tears wet my cheeks. All I can ask is why me? What did I do to ever deserve this life. What did the rest of the children do? What's wrong with me? Why do I have to be such an outcast? As tendrils of self-pity enclose around me, I'm banished to sleep again. The dream was different, but the level of intensity didn't change. I was fleeing again. From the same enemy. For the same reason. But doom seemed to take over.

I stumbled forward. My foot had caught in an invisible dip, I tripped again. This time the grout d was soft, but it was nit comforting at all. It wasn't cold, like the floor I woke up on. It meant that the nightmare wasn't over yet. I felt harsh, sturdy hands grab my arms so hard, it felt like they we going to pop out of their sockets. I let out a shriek of fright and I heard a cold laugh. It sent chills up my spine. "Now, now, Evangeline. Calm down. We need you relaxed or else it's going to hurt more." The voice snarled. I screamed out, but my mouth didn't make a noise. Thrashing around, I tried to escape their steel grip. I felt an impact on my back. It took a second before the pain actually came. It was so subtle that I fell forward on my face. The floor was cold. I let out a sigh of relief. It was all over. My chin was resting on the tiles, my back still hurting. My eyes were blurred with tears.

I realize this isn't the aftermath. It's only just begun.
