There are a lot of reasons to not be here. The racetrack is often noisy and smells, even now in the early hours of the day, like burning rubber and petrol. The arena is nowhere as fancy as the City Circle; Aiden scoffs quietly at the dull gray track and turns his nose pointedly at the pristine seats. Really, Aiden doesn't need to be here, doesn't need to prove anything (he's already proven that he can sneak in wherever he wants to, hasn't he), and he certainly can leave right now.

But there is going to be a race later on in the day, and all the tops in the Capitol are invited. So naturally Aiden is going to hide out somewhere so he can see what the cream of the Capitol see, be exactly as they are.

And when his schoolmates - acquaintances, he thinks (and damn if his traitorous hand touches the scar on his neck, damn if he remembers the time when he would have given anything for them to accept him) - talk about how amazing on their flat screen televisions the race was, he'll be able to sneer at them and say, "You missed out." Because they know nothing, have seen nothing but what they are shown to see, they'll be made to experience things second-hand, as all those who are unimportant do.

Screw all that. Aiden came to feel.

He pulls himself over the railing, balancing precariously on one toe - curse all these heights, maybe one day he'll be tall enough for his own adventures - and manages to not fall flat on his face in the gravel. A part of him grumbles at the grace that is a fluke, while the other thinks, The scratches wouldn't heal so well if I had fallen. He brushes a hand absently over his cheek as he gazes around and, deliberately, gives a huge yawn. What a boring place, do people actually come here for entertainment? Where is the life? Where is the thrill?

Today started just like most race days would, me wanting to beat up the alarm clock that stood innocently on my bedside table. The offending device had rang out into the room and deprived me of well needed sleep much earlier than I would have liked. My eyes opened just enough so I could guide my arm and hand towards the clock and silence the noise that had woken me up in the middle of a good dream. "Damn it", I whispered to myself as my eyes opened further to read the time displayed. 6am. For somebody who loved the idea of a lie in in the mornings this was no time to be awake. Rarely am I up before 10am unless it is absolutely essential. I may love race days with all my heart but the early morning practice I have always loathed with a passion. Ideally, I wanted to ignore my rude awakening and return to the land of slumber. My eyes were already starting to close themselves again, tempting me to skip out on practice and just go up to the track later but I knew I needed to get a few laps in before the race so I forced my eyes to stay open and tried to focus on getting out of bed so I could prepare. I pushed the duvet aside and got myself out of bed, not bothering to put the covers back over nicely. There was little to do in my bedroom at the moment as first thing was first. I needed to wake myself up a little before I did anything else and I knew exactly what I had to do to achieve that. I trudged downstairs, not paying much attention to anything that I was doing. I headed into the kitchen and walked over to the kettle and started to make myself a coffee. Once it was ready I sat at the table to drink it slowly.

The coffee was both warming on a cold morning and a good wake up call. I ended up drinking the whole cup a lot faster than I had expected but trivial things like that didn't matter. The amount I had consumed would give me enough energy until I got out onto the track where I could get some more coffee before practice. With this over I forced myself to head back up the stairs and into the bathroom where I had a quick shower before getting myself changed. I just put on my regular clothes for now since I would always change into my leathers not long before a practice or race was due to begin. I had on a long sleeved black top with a pair of grey jeans. I grabbed my dark grey jumper and put that on over my top since the weather had started to grow colder lately since winter is most definitely on the way. I put on my boots and looked at my reflection in the mirror. I didn't see much point in doing anything with my hair since it was going to be hidden by my crash helmet most of the time anyway. It would just be even more effort than needed and I was doing as little as possible as to conserve the little energy my disrupted sleep had given me. I packed all the things I would need for the day into my backpack and returned to the kitchen so I could have breakfast. This was simple today as I just put a slice of toast in the toaster and put butter and jam on once it was ready. It was always good to eat on a race day since it is no good trying to focus on speed with an empty stomach. This was demolished rather quickly and before I knew it the time on my watch read 7:30am so it was time for me to leave and head towards the track. I grabbed my backpack and coat before leaving.

The cool breeze blew towards me as I made my way through the streets of the Capitol. Although I would normally hate this today I was thankful as the cold brushing against me served to wake me up even more on my journey. It was always a nice quiet route to travel in the mornings and I reached the track fairly quickly and wasted little time in getting myself into the warmth of the building. Quickly making my way to the room assigned to me for the day, I went inside and locked the door in order for me to get changed into my leathers. I smiled once this was done and went into the main room where some of the others were already settled and biding time until they could get out and practice. This was where I was able to grab a second cup of coffee and chat for a while with the others. The room was buzzing with excitement about today's race since only the highest of the Capitol had been invited there as spectators. This was always one of the more fun racing events of the year as the thought of being watched by the cream of the Capitol made everyone more determined to do their best. More and more racers entered and there was a pretty big conversation going between the yawns and swigs of coffee. It kept everyone busy while they waited and was a great opportunity to catch up with each other. Mornings may be the worst part of the day but at least there I could try to make the best of it. There was only a short while to go until things would start to happen so I excused myself from the table and put my empty coffee cup into the sink before leaving the room and heading outside into the cold.

It was always a tradition of mine to take a little walk outside before a practice or race, unless it was raining. I'm not that crazy after all. It acted to soothe my mind and help me focus on the task that would very soon be ahead of me. There was something therapeutic in the whole idea of a little stroll that had worked for me ever since I started racing. My feet took me slowly around my usual route while the cold did it's best to annoy me. It was all quiet outside since everyone else was still inside chatting over coffee and only the racers would be there at that time in the morning. Anyone else hanging around the area this early would have to be at least slightly crazy. The silence made me smile slightly as I walked until I thought I could hear something in the distance and my head turned sharply to find the source of the noise. Quickly scanning around I could see something near the railings and upon closer inspection saw there was a figure near there and walked closer to investigate. It was very rare that any of the others would come outside in the cold and take a walk and I doubted any of them would be hanging around near the railings. My speed increased and I could soon see that it was someone who wasn't meant to be here. A teenage boy who couldn't have been older than 16. Most likely he had gone over the railings to sneak inside. I started to run towards him now until I got close enough and then stopped near him. What was this boy doing here anyway? It was pretty obvious he was up to something sneaky and I didn't like the idea one bit. "What would you be doing here so early in the morning?", I said loudly to him in the hope that I would get his attention and he would explain himself.

The chilly air on the track raises goosebumps on Aiden's skin. He rubs his arms absently, more absorbed in wondering why the place is such a bore. This is a complete waste of time. Aiden pouts at the world in general. All I want right now is just a little bit of a thrill, and the world can't even deliver. He scuffs the gravel with his shoe and scowls down at his feet.

Aiden's been caught a ton of times. Sometimes the act of being caught is the most fun part about sneaking in somewhere, and sometimes it's the fear of getting caught that sends a rush through Aiden's body.

The last time someone caught him doing things he shouldn't was in school. Some girl in school - he doesn't even know her name - practically dragged Aiden into the bathroom to kiss him. (He's not really clear why, he supposes she must be one of those who sneaks out like he does and saw him somewhere, or maybe she's just interested in him, who knows?) The whole thing wasn't at all Aiden's idea, but once she started he didn't really mind... though that's mostly because he knew this one teacher was on her way to the bathroom herself. He anticipated when she would enter, and what fun that would be. She didn't disappoint - when she spotted them she grabbed Aiden by the scuff of his shirt and threw him out of the ladies', screaming all the while.

Aiden distinctly remembers laughing on the cold tile floor, with disapproval thick in the air around him. (He also kind of remembers the ringing in his ears from her shrill voice, calling him a heathen, and he couldn't, couldn't stop laughing. Not with the adrenaline pumping so fast through his veins.)

As he figured, he got in trouble (not that it mattered) and served detention the next day. (Mother didn't notice, not that he wants her to, he can get away with so much, hah, the old girl doesn't even realize he gets in trouble.) The girl who kissed him went free, pleading that Aiden lured her in. Aiden didn't care - she knows the truth, and it's not like his punishment was so severe that he'll hate her for life.

Morosely, Aiden leans back against the railing and releases a sigh. He just wants that kind of thrill all over again. I've been a good boy, haven't I? How about a pretty please? Maybe whoever's up there just wants him to beg a little. Only if no one ever finds out.

"What would you be doing here so early in the morning?"

The voice kind of startles Aiden (he almost falls over in shock, he didn't even notice anyone coming up to him, not that he'll ever mention it to anyone). Pushing himself carefully up he turns to see a tall, tanned man who looks like he might be in his late twenties or early thirties (though it's hard to tell with Capitol technology, really, the man might actually be a hundred years old for all Aiden knows). He's wearing... Are those all real leather?

[/color] His eyes widen just a little, and Aiden kind of really wants to touch the fabric.

He tucks his hands into his pockets. "Nothing much," Aiden says as innocently as he can. "Why, what are you doing here?" Maybe he bats his lashes just a little and maybe he peeks out from under them with a coy smile, but hey, it's all part of the charm (one that he doesn't really have).

It's also all part of a nonexistent plan.[/justify][/color][/blockquote][/blockquote]
