Things Change // Villela Family

I sit on the front steps of our brand new house, my elbows on my knees and fingers folded together. A light breeze files through the evening air. The sun has already set and the moon starts to rise. Chills run up and down my spin and I unroll the sleeves of my gray shirt so the sleeves ends at my wrists.

Today is the day we finally finished unpacking. A few weeks ago we moved into a more grand house, with a larger yard. Dad is planning to continue his farming business here and Mom will find work somewhere. They're hoping I will continue babysitting for different families in the district. Or maybe they want me to get a job at a shop or something. I don't want to think of it now, when it's so peaceful. The breeze makes my blonde hair flicker, like a fire. Near the square, some shops will be closing down very soon. Some have already arrived home from work.

I needed fresh air and peace, that's why I'm here. My room, books, being with friends, it just doesn't provide those two things. Right now, yes, this is all I need. I allow myself to close my eyes and the wind to circle me. I'm not as cold as I would be if I wasn't wearing jeans and a long sleeved shirt. My feet are bare but I don't mind. With my eyes closed, my hearing sharpens. I hear the ruckus from inside our house, people going about and doing whatever they please.

There's a book I have to read for school. It's boring and I honestly forget what it is about. Shows how much I've been paying attention. I don't want to read that either. I don't want to do anything except being here. For right now, this is all I need.
