Mantel is an average looking boy. He isn't handsome but isn't really ugly either, he isn't that attractive. Some could consider him 'cute' but that's just because he's small and fragile. He isn't strong, he has a very small frame. He stands at 1.45m so isn't very tall or intimidating. Pretty skinny as well considering he lives in district 10. His teeth are white and clean but it's pretty difficult to rot your teeth when you can't afford sweets or anything bad for you. Considering he's poor he's malnourished, you can easily count his ribs.

He has brown eyes that are clear to see. The whites of his eyes are bluish with bluish sort of veins running through them due to his disease (explained later). His hair is jet black. His hair is actually really greasy, if you ran your hand through his hair it would be wet with grease which is -really- unattractive. You can easily see the grease in his hair. He thinks it makes him look cool or something but it really doesn't. People just make fun of him for it despite him not caring much. His hear is greasy, dirty and just all in all unruly. He never takes care of it properly.

Another thing about him is that he has type I Osteogenesis imperfecta (Brittle bone disease). Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inborn disease causing fractures in childhood. It also causes fractures in adults.

OI is a genetic disorder usually resulting from abnormalities of the genes that control the production of a protein called collagen. This is the main protein in bone and essential for its strength (source taken from netdoctor.co.uk). So in other words he is very weak due to the lack of Collagen in his body. He can barely lift most things.

Because of this disease the whites of his eyes are blue. His teeth are also weak and fragile like the rest of his bones. Easily breakable. His bones can easily fracture. Sometimes it happens when he is handling things normally or somethings it happen when there is a trauma on the bone such as being punched or kicked. It's really unpredictable. Luckily his hearing isn't that bad from his disease like most people are.

His growth rate is impaired. He will most likely be the current height he is for a very long time. These are just all the downfalls of having brittle bone disease. He is very small considering his age, his hands are smaller than average, his feet, his height. His physical body is just... less than desirable. He doesn't need crutches, only just when he breaks or fractures a leg.

Personality:

Despite his bad situation Mantle tries to keep a very positive outlook on life. He tries to joke around, he acts like a clown in school. Always trying to get people's attention, he is an attention seeker. He gets into trouble a lot and jokes around despite mostly being in a splint or a cast or on crutches. But he still tries to be a joker, he still tries to have a positive outlook on life despite what he feels on the inside.

He's bullied a lot. Kids in his class like to bully him about his disease. he had gotten broken bones more times than desirable because people throw stuff at him to see if they can 'score points for breaking the twig'. And when he breaks a bone they usually just run away. Despite always trying to be a clown to everyone he meets he's just a normal bullied boy just because he has a disease, on the surface he's happy but underneath all those laughs there a crying boy desperate for a way out.

As a result of this he has had suicidal thoughts a few times but has just never gone through with it. He doesn't want to but he does want to. When you get to be his friend he's actually calm and opens up to you, he doesn't have many friends and only lives with his father. He doesn't want to leave his dad alone if he dies despite the fact he has been considering finding a way to die for a few months but he just can't bring himself to do such a thing.

He isn't fit for work in district 10 so mostly stays at home with his dad. If you get close to him he's friendly, however he doesn't expect to get any friends anytime soon. He's scared of doing any physical labor of any kind because he's afraid he'll break his bones. He's gentle, he's not a fighting guy, he's the type of guy to just take hits and punishment, not dish it out, he's not fit for fighting anyway. If he's lucky he might take a hit and not break a bone, but that rarely happens.

History:

Mantel was a complicated birth. His mother died during child birth, the doctors immediately found he had very weak bones, and noticed the whites in his eyes were rather blue. Those signs showed he had brittle bone disease and his devastated father was immediately told to be careful. His father vowed to take care of the closest thing he had to his dead wife. And so he has and he forever will.

As Mantel grew older he found out the many disadvantages of living in District ten with such a bad disease. District ten was such a poor district, his family lived on a ranch. Mantel could never do any of the work with his dad, he had to stay inside because his bones may have snapped like twigs. Mantel hated not being able to help out, it made him feel useless, weak.

He went to school and was bullied because of his state. People laughed at him, threw stuff at him because he couldn't even lift a chair. He hated school, he just wanted to disappear. He tried to become more noticed, more likable by acting like a class clown, drawing attention to himself. Being funny and sometimes looking like a fool. It worked to a degree, people noticed him. People talked about him. However some kids still bullied him.

As he grows older he still needs to cope with his situation. No mother and being bullied at school. With such a weak frame like his. He tries to cope through life, just trying to find a way to make it better. He hopes it gets better. he can only hope it will get better for his sake. "It can't get any worse. it can only get better right?"
