male. twenty-nine. district eleven. mayor.
what you seeStanding at about 6'3'', Demeter has always been one of the taller kids. He started puberty earlier than most and found himself towering over teachers, parents and fellow students before it seemed natural. He weighs in at about 215lbs due to the muscle that lines his body, barely any fat actually contributing to the number. His skin is coloured a dark shade all over, only appearing slightly lighter along his palms and the base of his feet. He stands with his broad shoulders back, adding more of a powerful look to him. Youth is one thing that can clearly be seen, even despite his larger build and his thick facial hair. He looks very healthy and energetic, appearing to be around his mid-twenties instead of nearing the age of thirty.
His dark brown hair is cut really short, cut to the point where it's about as long as his godly goatee. His eyes are small and round, the dark brown irises being surrounded by a lot of white. His eyebrows arch over top, once again cut to the same length as his hair and goatee. Demeter's cheekbones are set high, making the upper part of his cheeks wider and more prominent. His ears are tucked back against his head, remaining only slightly noticeable when looking at him straight on. His nose is thick and a regular length, his nostrils also being quite large. Demeter's lips are seem to be coloured a dull purple colour and they are quite thick and fairly long, often pulled up in a crooked grin. As said before, he has a god like goatee that goes all the way down his jawline and then wraps around his mouth. A small strip of hair connects the facial hair around his chin to right below his lip.
His thick, muscular neck splits out into two broad and thick shoulders that look like they could support almost anything. Demeter appears as if he could be a Career in every way except for being from District Eleven. His chest is thick as well, as is his stomach. However, neither are fat. His abs are prominent through his dark skin but most never have the chance to see as he usually covers up with a shirt. His arms are thick and long, ending in large hands. His fingers also stretch out quite a bit from his hand, ending in smooth nails that have been taken care of by servants who work in the Justice Building. His palms are smooth yet often clammy, and they are large enough to hold two hands in one. A dark tribal tattoo wraps around his left bicep, something he got on a visit to the Capitol. He kept it under the radar as much as he could, especially because he was fairly sure it was illegal.
Long legs connect him to the ground, giving Demeter most of his height. He often likes to jog around the backyard of the Justice Building and through the streets when it is late at night. Thats why they are also thick with muscle. His legs end with large feet that often need shoes that are tailored specifically for him. His feet are fairly flat and the base is worn from standing on them quite often. They are often covered with clean, black dress shoes which never seem to lose their shine.
His legs are hidden behind dress pants that vary in colour, a colour which matches the one of his suit jacket. A blue and black suit hang in his closet, the only two he ever plans on owning. Each has two ties that match and he has them carefully strung up from hooks on his wall. His dresser is filled with black and white dress shirts for when he's going to be seen in office or for any ceremony that the whole District will see. Demeter is almost always seen in a suit by the citizens of District Eleven as it's more formal and proper, in his opinion. He purchased both of them from the Capitol when he was appointed as mayor and each suit is treated as if they are children. He has an elderly woman clean them every week so they always look brand new.
When he's dressing in a casual way, he often sticks with sweatpants and loose t-shirts.
what you areWords come so easily to the man, as they always have since he could first speak. His smooth way of speaking has always been the one thing that Demeter has prided himself in. Not to mention it helped him through school, both academically and socially. As he grew up, almost everybody liked him because it was just so easy to do so. He had the kind of personality that went well with everybody, when he tries to be charismatic. The skill with words is mostly seen when he's communicating with those who are important to him being mayor or when he's talking to the female species. Demeter doesn't even see it as flirting but instead believes that it's him "just being nice". It definitely helps him in his position of power and leadership when he's doing speeches or explaining how things would work. His charisma has always helped him to be a good leader.
Keeping a level-head in tense situations, even when shit hits the fan, Demeter has always been able to stay calm. With a few breaths in and exhaling equally as much, he manages to keep himself under control enough to make a smart decision. Which happens more often that you'd think. Most would see it as a flaw that Demeter gets straight to the point. He doesn't beat around the bush and try to ease anybody into the truth, instead just delivering it and not really caring if it hurts anybody in any way. He's never really cared if he manages to offend somebody as he can usually make up for it by using his charm. Usually. He's definitely very blunt and he isn't afraid to tell the truth, even if it hurts. After all, the truth sometimes has to hurt. That's the way Demeter sees it, at least.
It's just how he was made. That's his excuse when people tell him to cut out all the work that he does. Staying up late in the night and often going without any sleep at all, Demeter won't stop his work for anything. It's a huge part of his life because he makes it that way. Being the mayor doesn't require very much physical work but he still finds a way to do it and to help out with those who desperately need it. But he doesn't just stop there. The mental work is still done in his office as he passes millions of papers across his desk and into a machine that will send it to the Capitol. He's stubborn as an old goat. And although he'll disagree when anybody says that, he knows it's true too. Still, Demeter always wishes to work harder and once he does, he believes he has to work even harder than that. Nobody would be surprised if it's what drags him to his grave.
Demeter definitely cares about the well-being of his subjects more than he cares about the production of the District. Sure, it still matters that they meet their quota and that they continue to provide the food that feeds the Capitol and the richer Districts, as well as themselves. He definitely worries about that. However, he would be more likely to give less of a workload for the day than he would be to give more. Part of the reason is that he worked his hands to the bone each and every day back when he was younger and now that he has power, he wishes to change that for everybody else. So he tries to be as nice as possible to those in the District, without seeming like a pushover. He still has no worries with slamming the hammer of law down if anybody is disobeying the rules that are set in place.
Peacekeepers all around District Eleven have a fairly good relationship with Demeter. They are much more cruel than he is but still, they respect his decisions for the most part. Some of his greatest friends are the officers who swear to protect the District and to keep the peace. He manages to allow them to deliver punishments while also being as forgiving as he possibly can for all the citizens of the District. But don't get the wrong picture. District Eleven isn't a nice place to live. They are still worked until they are nearly ready to pass out from exhaustion, just like every District is. Demeter just tries to ensure that they aren't killed from it. He tries to lessen the workload a slight bit whenever he can. And for whatever reason, the citizens like him for it. So he keeps at that level with his rulings.
He respects the power that was given to him instead of abusing it. Demeter is well aware that he could use his perks as being the Mayor to do many things that would benefit himself. However, he tries his best to not abuse everything he has so he can be viewed as a great mayor by both District Eleven and the Capitol. But in all honesty, Demeter hates the Capitol just as much as every other citizen who's threatened by the Games in some way. He only follows their orders because he has to and he would be more than willing to see them fall. It isn't really the Capitol that makes him angry. It is the idea of the Games that have made him dislike their beliefs and opinions. The Games that had claimed one of his siblings as if it really didn't matter that the lives of seven other children were then destroyed.
But that's not the memory that plagues him the most. Demeter, still to this day, is bothered by the kidnapping of his closest sibling. Hera was always his favourite sibling as she was the one who paid the most attention to her older brother. And then she was taken away, causing something inside of Demeter to crack. For the next ten years he spent all of his time trying to find her and to bring her back home. But there was no use to it as she was gone and would never be found again. And now, he feels as if it is all his fault. The memories of his sister keep him up on the nights where he actually tries to sleep and her face is burned into his mind, even when he's awake. He feels the pain each and every day and the guilt is often too much. But since he gave up on looking for her, he has vowed to do anything he could to protect everybody else from going through the same thing he did. However, he never really gave up. Never will, probably. Although, he wouldn't admit it to anybody.
what you rememberDemeter was born into quite a large family. He was the middle child, having five older siblings and five younger siblings. His father, Cronus, was a worker in the fields who spent most of his time planting and cutting down the crops. He met Rhea, a rich girl whose parents worked as vendors at a small stall that provided pomegranates for those who could afford it. They fell in love after months and months of spending time together and then they started the family. Zeus was the oldest child and he was the first boy born into the family. That's why he took it upon himself to try to take care of the next four children who came. The twins Poseidon and Arion, Despoina and Hades came next, in that order. Then came Demeter, who was quite happy with being the youngest child. But Hestia, the triplets Persephone, Plutus and Philomelus and then Hera followed. And each and every one of them were raised in a small house by the fields.
Demeter grew up learning that family was everything. His extremely large family dealt with fitting in the smaller home and they ended up becoming very close. Nothing split the Legume's apart ever because they were just that close. The triplets and the twins stuck together and everybody else seemed to form closer bonds with a certain sibling so they'd always have at least one person to rely on. And Demeter bonded with Hera, who was eight years younger than him. Growing up, Demeter realized how persuasive he could be using his words and he learned that he had some sort of charm that attracted the attention of many around him. Demeter learned that he would be the perfect leader if he just tried. And from the day he turned thirteen on, he focused all of his time on fulfilling all of his potential.
He always did well in school as he grew up. Most of the classes he excelled at were ones that required him to speak but even the mental classes like the sciences and the mathematics were classes he did well in. School was a big part of his life and he was always eager to learn so he could perfect any abilities he had. The Reapings always threatened his nearly perfect life though, and he feared them more than anything else in the world. He'd spend the whole morning with his family, just enjoying the time together and then he'd walk with all of them to the square. Standing in his section, he'd hope that none of their names would be called. And one Reaping day, the worst possible situation had happened. Demeter's name was called by the loud, powerful voice from the man on stage. He barely had time to make his way onto the stage before Plutus ran up and took his spot. And that was when the guilt started in Demeter.
Plutus died on Day 7. He was the nineteenth tribute to fall from the swipe of a blade and it made the lives of each Legume suck for the next while. As if that wasn't enough though, another tragedy struck when Demeter was 16. His best friend and youngest sister Hera was taken away during a District celebration. It was so sudden and so fast that none of the Legume family members could stop the man as he left with the young girl. And thus began Demeter's search for his sister. He was the only one who would be willing to do it, after all. The next day, he signed up to move crates that transported the goods between Districts. Over the years he had the chance to see many places but there was never a sign of his little sister. He would never see her again.
He gave up on the day he won the election as Mayor. "I'm moving on to a new life now" was what he said to his mother when he shared the news. She wanted nothing more than to see her baby girl once more. But there was no point in continuing the search. Hera was gone, just as Plutus was. Dead or living a new life, Hera was no longer a Legume. The guilt never left Demeter though, even as he lived his daily life as the Mayor of District Eleven. The guilt wouldn't leave him for years and years and it still hasn't left him at the age of twenty nine. Plutus and Hera would always remain in his mind and would always remind him of how he failed his family twice. And that's why he tried so hard to be a great mayor. So he could bring honour to his name and to try to make up for the mistakes he made in his earlier life.
